Lin Wenhui is not only well-versed in literature in the eyes of the villagers in Liu Family Village, but he also lacks the pretentiousness often found in scholars. He is quite righteous, which earns him great respect from the villagers. Even the self-important Qing Shusheng and the self-proclaimed noble An Bingwen regard him with a different level of respect and treat him well.
When Liu Xiuzhen turned around and saw that it was Lin Wenhui standing behind her, she toned down her earlier arrogance. She stood before him properly, like a student facing a teacher, and lowered her hands that had been on her hips.
While speaking, Liu Xiuzhen took a few steps back to the side of the road, making way for Lin Wenhui.
Lin Wenhui did not respond to Liu Xiuzhen's words. Instead, he pointed towards Bai Cuifen's house and said, "Sister-in-law, I'm going to check what happened at their place. With me and Shusheng Brother going, you don't need to go; you have elders and children at home waiting for you to make breakfast."
After greeting Liu Xiuzhen politely, Lin Wenhui headed towards Bai Cuifen's house.
Earlier, when Lin Wenhui saw Liu Xiuzhen chasing after Qing Shusheng, he knew that given Liu Xiuzhen's personality, she was definitely not going to help Qing Shusheng at Bai Cuifen's house. She must have wanted to catch up with Qing Shusheng to stop him from going there, possibly even intending to have a big argument with him. However, to avoid awkwardness, Lin Wenhui deliberately said what he did.
Not long after Lin Wenhui arrived at Bai Cuifen's house, other villagers began to gather around. Some stood at the door watching, while others entered Bai Cuifen's house to find out what was happening.
Seeing this scene, Liu Xiuzhen stopped shouting and didn’t bother picking up the vegetables scattered on the ground. She stood in place, peering towards Bai Cuifen's house.
Before long, people began coming in and out of Bai Cuifen's house, calling out, "Hurry! Hurry! It's bad; the situation is very serious."
Liu Xiuzhen saw her man Qing Shusheng and Lin Wenhui come out of Bai Cuifen's house. They stood at the door shouting loudly for everyone to quickly prepare a stretcher.
After giving instructions to everyone, Qing Shusheng and Lin Wenhui went back inside.
Outside, people hurriedly rushed back to their homes—those who could grab bamboo beds took them, those who could get wooden beams did so, and those who could fetch ropes grabbed ropes. In less than a tea break’s time, they had prepared the stretcher and shouted to those inside the house, "Hurry up; the stretcher is ready."
At that moment, Qing Shusheng came out of the house carrying An Bingwen on his back, while Lin Wenhui supported both Qing Shusheng and An Bingwen. Bai Cuifen followed behind, crying.
After placing An Bingwen on a stretcher, four strong young men quickly grabbed it.
Qing Shusheng walked over to a slightly weaker young man and said, "It's far to the hospital in town. You won't be able to carry him; let me take over!"
With that, the burden fell onto his shoulders.
Liu Xiuzhen stood in front of her house, motionless as she watched everyone busy themselves. When the people carrying the stretcher walked out of the village, she hurried to the bridge and gazed at their slowly disappearing figures until they were out of sight, then she returned home with a sense of loss.
After standing at her doorstep for a while, she saw a passerby and quickly grabbed them to inquire, "What happened at that house?" Liu Xiuzhen gestured toward Bai Cuifen's home.
"An Bingwen is not doing well; he probably won't make it this time," the passerby shook their head and left.
Once the person left, Liu Xiuzhen turned to go inside but bumped into Liu Dezhou, who was walking out with his hands behind his back.
"Father," Liu Xiuzhen called out.
Liu Dezhou acknowledged her with a grunt and continued walking forward. Suddenly, he turned around and called out to Liu Xiuzhen, pointing at her. "Daxiu, why can't I teach you? I've told you so many times that once you step out of this courtyard, no matter what men are doing outside, you must not shout or yell at them."
