"Brother Shaojie, come over and eat," Lin Xi said, pulling An Shaojie's hand.
Zhi Lan went to the kitchen and brought out four bowls, four pairs of chopsticks, and sat down with the three children beside a low stool to start eating.
"Mama, why isn't there any food cooked at home today? Whose food is this?" Lin Xi blinked her big eyes at Zhi Lan.
Zhi Lan gently cleared her throat. "Eat up, An Shaojie, Shaw Min, today this food is from your own home, so eat more. Lin Xi, you should eat more too; today it's Brother Shaojie's family's meal."
"Oh, oh, it's Brother Shaojie's family's meal," Lin Xi exclaimed joyfully, clapping her hands. Suddenly noticing that Jia Zhilan's expression was off, she quickly stopped smiling and looked timidly at Zhi Lan. "Mother En."
Zhi Lan's eyes were a bit red. "It's okay, just eat," she said, her voice slightly choked.
Although Lin Xi didn't know what had happened, she sensed that something sad was going on among them from Zhi Lan's expression and tone. Unconsciously, she glanced at An Shaojie and Shaw Min, finally fixing her gaze on An Shaojie.
An Shaojie held his bowl with both hands, his head lowered and lips tightly pressed together.
"Eat up, be good," Zhi Lan said softly while stroking An Shaojie's head.
Suddenly, An Shaojie's hands holding the bowl began to tremble violently, his shoulders shaking as well. He let out suppressed sobs from his throat, followed by tears streaming down his face.
Zhi Lan put down her bowl and chopsticks and reached out to wipe An Shaojie's tears, unable to hold back her own tears as they fell freely.
Seeing this scene, Lin Xi and Shaw Min stopped eating and stared in shock at An Shaojie while holding their bowls.
"Eat, good child, An Shaojie is the best. If you don't eat, your Sister Shaomin and Lin Xi won't eat either. Don't you like Lin Xi the most? If she doesn't eat, Uncle Lin will definitely scold her." Zhi Lan placed the bowl and chopsticks back into An Shaojie's hands.
With tears in his eyes, An Shaojie nodded and picked up the bowl and chopsticks, lowering his head and desperately shoveling rice into his mouth. The rice mixed with his tears and saliva, choking him as he swallowed.
Just after finishing his meal, a small figure peeked in at the door. Lin Xi happily jumped up from her seat, waving and calling out, "Lanlan, come in!"
Qinglan bounced in through the threshold of Lin Xi's home, joyfully running up to Lin Xi. She timidly looked at An Shaojie sitting beside Lin Xi, then turned to Zhi Lan, leaning against her and calling out, "Mother."
Zhi Lan pinched Qinglan's pointed chin. "Hmm, Lanlan is good. You can stay at my house this afternoon and play with your Lin Sister, Sister Shaomin, and Brother Shaojie."
Qinglan nodded obediently, smiling at Lin Xi and Shaw Min before turning her head to look at An Shaojie with some fear. This time, An Shaojie did not glare at her fiercely.
After Zhi Lan finished tidying up the bowls and chopsticks, she went to Bai Cuifen's house.
Once Bai Cuifen left, a brief silence followed before several naive children immediately perked up again. Taking advantage of the slight smile that had just appeared on An Shaojie's face, Qinglan suddenly suggested going to play in the back mountain of Lin Xi's home.
"There's a plum tree behind Lin Sister's house; shall we go pick some green plums?"
Qinglan clapped her hands in cheer but glanced sneakily at An Shaojie.
An Shaojie lowered his eyelids, his gaze lacking the usual rebelliousness.
Lin Xi and Shaw Min also looked at him. His face did not show a bright smile, but Qinglan's suggestion seemed to offer him a way to escape some sorrowful emotion. He nodded.
The four children walked up the mountain along a path in the backyard of Lin Xi's home.
On the slope, there were indeed some small greenish fruits on the Plum Tree, but they hung high on the branches.
