"But, An Shaojie," Shaw Min said, brushing aside the strands of hair that had been blown out of place by the wind. "Qinglan has a good character too, but I don't understand why you... dislike her so much."
In the end, between the words "don't like her" and "hate her," Shaw Min chose to use "hate" to describe An Shaojie's attitude towards Qinglan.
"Is it just because of her mother and father?" Shaw Min looked into An Shaojie's deep black eyes, as if trying to see through his heart.
"Her mother is her mother; it has nothing to do with her. As for her father... you have misunderstood him. Now that you're grown up, you should understand these things," Shaw Min continued.
Hearing Shaw Min suddenly mention Qinglan made An Shaojie's heart skip a beat. Every time he heard someone mention her name, he always felt an inexplicable panic inside.
She had lingered in front of him for too long; to be precise, she had never truly disappeared from his heart, always remaining there.
However, this lingering feeling was different from Lin Xi's presence in his heart.
Lin Xi was kept in a hidden corner of his heart. In that corner, the sky was blue, the grass was green, and the sun shone brightly; only she smiled warmly at him.
In contrast, Qinglan was not quietly staying in some corner of his heart; she was a commotion throughout his entire being, like wind and rain, occasionally bringing him warm sunshine.
So sometimes, he wanted to drive her completely out of his heart. But whenever he had such thoughts, he felt inexplicably restless, panicked, even fearful.
Because she had been in front of him for so long that her figure seemed etched into his heart. Removing her would cause a slight pain and a hint of panic within him.
The lonely and desolate him had grown accustomed to this shadow accompanying him. Suddenly driving this shadow completely out of his heart would leave him with a faint sense of loss and emptiness.
Thus, every time he managed to push her figure away for a while, he would gently place her back in her original spot in his heart.
"Anyway, I won't like her. Let her stay there! Ignored and unbothered; let her shadow fade away on its own!"
That night, when Shaw Min suddenly asked An Shaojie why he disliked Qinglan, An Shaojie couldn't come up with an answer. He seemed to have gotten used to not talking to her, remaining indifferent while she would always stay within his line of sight.
However, when it came to his feelings towards her, it seemed that he no longer harbored such emotions. Sometimes, in the classroom, when he felt tired from reading, he would occasionally lift his head and unconsciously search for her figure. If she wasn't there, he would feel a bit lost.
At the same time, a sense of annoyance, resentment, and contempt would surge within him. "Hmph! She's ultimately not a girl who can settle down. How can she even compare herself to Lin Mei Mei?"
That night, An Shaojie did not answer Shaw Min's question, and the topic abruptly came to a halt.
"Sister, I need to head back now. It's getting late; let's go back early! I've delayed you for so long without attending evening study," An Shaojie suddenly said.
After returning to school, An Shaojie went straight back to the dormitory. That night marked the first time since he started studying that he was the first to return to the dormitory.
In the dormitory, he lay on his bed tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Staring at the ceiling, he spent time thinking about Qinglan for the first time that night. But as his thoughts continued, he suddenly became irritated, sitting up in bed and slapping his head. He silently vowed, "I won't think about this person anymore; ever since childhood, just thinking of her makes me uneasy."
As An Shaojie made this vow, the sky was devoid of stars and moonlight; outside the window was a deep darkness.
"Lin Xi, where are you? I got into No. 1 High School for you. So now, you need to tell me where you'll be next; that's my direction for effort."
Before drifting off to sleep, the last person An Shaojie thought of was still Lin Xi.
Lin Xi, where are you?
In the broadcasting room of a high school in the Provincial Capital.
The sunlight in April was golden and bright, streaming through half-draped rice-colored curtains into the broadcasting room. On the windowsill sat a pot of lush green spider plants; as the golden sunlight illuminated the narrow leaves of the plants, they shimmered with a vibrant green glow.
Lin Xi wore a cream-colored low-neck top with a black dress adorned with white polka dots over it. She sat by the window where half of the curtain was drawn; soft light fell on one side of her face, making it porcelain-white and translucent on one side while the other side appeared hazy like her cream-colored top.
Lin Xi smiled lightly and said to the girl behind her, "Meng Ni, your family has something going on today. Why don't you head back for dinner? I'll take care of the remaining study time at school."
"Alright," replied the girl named Meng Ni. "When it's our turn to take duty next week, you go back first, okay?" As Meng Ni packed up the items on the broadcasting desk, she spoke to Lin Xi.
Yao Meng Ni was Lin Xi's partner at the school broadcasting service center. She was cheerful, lively, and straightforward, with both parents being civil servants. In September, her sister Yao Mengying would be going to Australia for a preparatory course, and tonight at seven o'clock, family members and friends were gathering at a hotel for a farewell dinner.
However, the school broadcasting wouldn't finish until after six-thirty in the evening, which was why Lin Xi urged her to leave early.
"Sure," Lin Xi agreed with Meng Ni and urged her to hurry, "Stop dawdling and go! You don't want your elders waiting for you."
After packing up her things, Meng Ni still stood in front of Lin Xi with an apologetic look, wanting to explain something or say a few more words of apology. "Lin Xi, I'm sorry to leave this to you."
Lin Xi stood up and gently pushed her towards the door. "Hurry up! If you're late, how can a girl be so fussy? It's not a big deal."
At the door, after waving goodbye to Lin Xi, Meng Ni rushed downstairs. The hem of her bright red coat fluttered lightly in the breeze coming through the corridor, like a flame that disappeared around the corner.
Once Meng Ni's figure vanished from sight, Lin Xi returned to her seat at the broadcasting desk.
Lin Xi glanced at her watch; it was exactly six-fifteen. "Next is study time at school. Today I will share a beautiful essay with my classmates."
After finishing the essay, it was just past six-thirty—timing was perfect. Lin Xi tidied up the items on the desk and organized her backpack before standing up and fully pulling back the half-drawn curtains. She looked out the window across the table. "Why hasn't it arrived yet?" Lin Xi murmured to herself.
