Whenever An Shaojie appeared, a reflexive "Brother Shaojie" would involuntarily slip from Qinglan's lips.
Although she never had the chance to call him that as she grew up, she always referred to him that way in her heart.
An Shaojie stopped in his tracks and finally noticed Qinglan.
He paused for a moment, remaining silent as he looked her up and down. Seeing her holding a warm Water Bottle, he felt a jolt in his heart as he suddenly remembered that he had forgotten to bring his own warm Water Bottle. At the same time, he immediately understood why Qinglan was standing in front of him.
"Uh, you forgot your Water Bottle," Qinglan said, extending her hand that held the Water Bottle forward.
Unlike usual, when he would frown and take a step back to keep her at a distance upon seeing her, An Shaojie's expression was gentle as he glanced at Qinglan.
Although his gaze seemed to reassess Qinglan, so what? She felt open and unafraid under his scrutiny.
Qinglan's clear eyes met An Shaojie's gaze, causing him to quickly look away.
He reached out to take the warm Water Bottle from Qinglan, muttering a "thank you" in a somewhat hoarse voice.
After receiving the warm Water Bottle, he turned and went back into the dormitory building to return it.
Qinglan stood at the entrance for a while, feeling the curious stares of those coming in and out, especially from her classmates who asked curiously, "Qinglan, why are you standing here?"
After awkwardly responding to a few classmates, she felt uncomfortable and walked several steps toward the classroom direction, moving away from the entrance. She stood on a small step in a less conspicuous spot, lowering her head and brushing the dirt on the ground.
When An Shaojie reached the steps and saw that Qinglan was still there, he paused again but did not greet her.
Qinglan stepped forward.
"Brother Shaojie."
An Shaojie did not respond but also did not show any dislike. Encouraged, Qinglan followed behind him.
"Brother Shaojie, Sister Shaomin is about to take the college entrance exam, right?"
Shaw Min is in her senior year and preparing for the college entrance examination, which is obvious. Moreover, the last time Shaw Min came to deliver clothes to An Shaojie, Qinglan encountered her and chatted for a while about her review situation.
As Qinglan expected, he did not respond to her question.
In fact, Qinglan did not need him to answer; she was just trying to avoid silence or perhaps trying to get closer to him. After all, they would encounter many familiar classmates on the way, and everyone knew that he and she were from the same village. If they walked together without saying a word, it would only confirm the rumors among classmates: that An Shaojie actually disliked Qinglan, but Qinglan kept pestering him.
An Shaojie walked very quickly, often leaving Qinglan far behind. He would casually slow down or greet classmates for a moment, waiting for Qinglan to catch up with him.
Although this was just a small change, a minor action, Qinglan noticed it and felt it in her heart. It expanded into a good beginning for their relationship, like a warm spring.
She even secretly vowed in her heart that if this was an opportunity he was giving her, if this was the start of a change in their relationship, if this was a gift from God out of sympathy for her, then she must seize this chance well.
When they reached the bottom of the sophomore building, they ran into Xiang Yuanqiu, who curiously stared at An Shaojie and Qinglan following behind him.
At that moment, Qinglan also saw her and quickly stepped forward to walk alongside An Shaojie.
An Shaojie seemed not to reject her; he paused slightly as if waiting for her to walk beside him.
Qinglan smiled at Xiang Yuanqiu. "Yuanqiu." She sweetly called out to Xiang Yuanqiu.
Xiang Yuanqiu smiled shyly but directed her gaze toward An Shaojie.
"An Shaojie, good morning." She only greeted An Shaojie, completely ignoring Qinglan, who had greeted her first.
That morning, An Shaojie's mood seemed particularly good. He not only nodded in response to Xiang Yuanqiu but also turned his face suddenly and said to Qinglan, "Hurry up; we have class." Although his voice was dull.
Qinglan seemed taken aback and uncertain if An Shaojie was speaking to her. She looked around; apart from herself and Xiang Yuanqiu, there was no one else.
"What are you looking at? We're going to be late."
An Shaojie's voice wasn't gentle; it still carried a coldness beneath its dullness. But at least it brought Qinglan back to reality, making her realize that he was indeed talking to her.
"Oh." Qinglan quickly caught up with An Shaojie's pace as they climbed the steps. At the same time, she glanced back at Xiang Yuanqiu, who still seemed stunned.
Xiang Yuanqiu blinked a few times, still unable to regain her composure as she stared in surprise at An Shaojie and Qinglan, who were swiftly ascending the stairs.
Since that day, An Shaojie's attitude towards Qinglan had gradually begun to change.
Although Qinglan was about 1.65 meters tall when she entered her sophomore year, her slender figure made her appear petite and delicate. Her cheerful, lively, and easygoing personality, combined with her good academic performance, made her like a little sprite in the class, adored by both students and teachers.
Every day when class ended, many classmates would gather around Qinglan's desk to play with her. Qinglan loved to laugh, and sometimes when she was particularly happy during a conversation, she would burst into hearty laughter.
Her laughter was infectious, capable of penetrating everyone's various emotions and spreading her joy to every heart in the classroom.
When she laughed, the smile on her face unfolded like layers of flowers blooming at night, gradually expanding. Sometimes it even made those around her feel as if her happiness and laughter permeated the air, filling it with joy. Thus, a group of chatty classmates always gathered around Qinglan.
In the past, An Shaojie had looked down on this phenomenon in class and Qinglan's behavior. He would often scoff and walk out of the classroom, distancing himself from the crowd surrounding Qinglan.
However, now he still wouldn't participate but would stand at a distance, quietly watching them laugh together, a smile occasionally appearing on his face.
Sometimes he would interject, "Hey! Your laughter is a bit too terrifying!"
Everyone would turn back to him with proud smiles because getting An Shaojie to lift his head from his books and pay attention was indeed no easy feat and something worth boasting about. After all, he was the top student in the class and a bookworm.
The happiest person in the crowd was probably Qinglan. She looked at An Shaojie with eyes filled not only with shyness and happiness but also gratitude. Sometimes there were even tears shimmering in her eyes. She was grateful for how he had given her such respect in front of Xiang Yuanqiu that day. She was thankful that he no longer disliked her so much. In her heart, she kept murmuring "Brother Shaojie!" as he began to draw closer to her!
