In a certain high school in the county, during the night before the college entrance examination.
"An Shaomin! An Shaomin! An Shaomin! Has An Shaomin arrived yet?"
A middle-aged male teacher wearing glasses stood at the podium, holding a list in his hand, calling out An Shaomin's name three times without receiving any response.
Below the podium, some students sat quietly in their seats while others chattered away. The teacher kept signaling for the students to quiet down, but his gestures seemed ineffective; the students were not paying him any mind, continuing their conversations while those who were quiet remained so.
This was the senior class that An Shaomin belonged to.
The teacher was counting the number of students present.
According to the school's and homeroom teacher's requirements, all students had to return to school the night before the exam. They were to gather in the classroom by seven o'clock for a headcount, and the teacher would go over preparations and important notes for the exam.
Jian Ming sat quietly in his seat, listening as the teacher called out An Shaomin's name, his gaze fixed on her empty seat.
There was no sign of An Shaomin there.
Earlier that afternoon, Jian Ming had been waiting in the classroom for Shaw Min. He was well aware of her habits and knew that she always returned to school on the last day of vacation around noon. After a short rest, she would come to the classroom to study in the afternoon. Even if she didn't study, she would come by to tidy up.
In the past, he would also come to the classroom that afternoon to study quietly alongside her.
Those were Jian Ming's most cherished and peaceful moments.
Because after returning to school from vacation, classmates often rested in their dorms or went out shopping. In that large classroom, it was usually just the two of them quietly reading together.
Or she was tidying up her things while he quietly read a book behind her.
This moment belonged solely to the two of them, with him silently watching the serene her.
Jian Ming, a mature, optimistic, and ambitious boy, radiated positive energy. Born into a family of civil servants and intellectuals, he was a fashionable young man who loved singing, especially emotional songs. Throughout his three years in high school, he taught all the songs for their class music lessons.
His voice was rich and magnetic, capable of evoking deep emotions. When he sang melancholic love songs, he could lead listeners to the depths of sadness. However, most of the time, he taught cheerful and bright songs. In the hearts of his classmates, he still carried an air of mystery and distance.
Although he appeared cheerful and sunny on the outside, he had not formed close relationships with other students in class. It seemed that he got along well with everyone but maintained a certain distance, adhering firmly to the principle that gentlemanly friendships should be as light as water.
This calm-natured boy was very skilled at singing sad songs. His classmates often wondered where his sorrowful emotions came from because he always seemed devoid of emotional fluctuations, wearing a consistently placid smile.
Perhaps due to his maturity, he was particularly fond of An Shaomin's quiet personality and traditional grace. Her plump oval face, fair complexion, rounded waist, and serene yet elegant smile always filled Jian Ming's heart with warmth and security.
This afternoon, as usual, he arrived at the classroom to wait for An Shaomin, intending to offer her some encouraging words before the exam.
However, after waiting all afternoon in the classroom, he still had not seen An Shaomin.
By seven in the evening, when the teacher called attendance, An Shaomin had still not appeared.
The teacher looked puzzled and asked every student from her dormitory. Their responses were all the same: "We don't know; we haven't seen her come to school."
"Could something have happened on her way to school?" Jian Ming suddenly felt an ominous premonition in his heart.
Typically composed Jian Ming began to feel restless and anxious.
"An Shaomin, An Shaomin, where are you? Why are you letting us down at such a crucial moment?"
At this moment, Jian Ming began to regret not seeing Shaw Min in the afternoon, realizing he had been careless.
He thought that on the last day of high school, the classroom would be empty, and no one would be reading anything on the final day. Perhaps Shaw Min had not come to the classroom as usual.
Little did he know she hadn't come to school at all.
If he had paid more attention to her in the afternoon, he would have asked her dormitory mates sooner. If he had known she wasn't at school, he could have rushed to her house in time.
Jian Ming couldn't help but slap his forehead in regret.
Yet, at the same time, he held onto hope that Shaw Min would suddenly appear in front of everyone the next morning, showing up at the exam venue.
However, reality did not align with Jian Ming's thoughts. At 7:30 AM the next day, when everyone entered the exam hall, Shaw Min was still absent. She did not appear until the end of the college entrance examination.
As the last exam concluded and classmates waved goodbye to each other, regardless of whether their expressions were disappointed or determined, everyone smiled and said farewell.
Yet among the crowd, Jian Ming could not find the familiar figure he longed to see.
His heart ached for a moment.
After returning home, he remained gloomy.
At this time, Simple was already on summer break and staying at home.
"Brother, did you not do well on the exam?"
Despite her usual carefree demeanor, Simple understood that this was a matter of great importance for her brother's future. She needed to care for his feelings and dared not act recklessly.
After both parents had gone to work, she sneaked into Jian Ming's room like a thief, tiptoeing in and sitting on the edge of his bed.
Jian Ming was lying on the bed with his hands behind his head, staring blankly at the ceiling.
Seeing his sister come in, Jian Ming sat up and crossed his legs on the bed.
"How's it going?"
"Not bad," he replied.
"Not bad? What kind of school can you get into? Spill some details." Simple squinted her eyes, her large black glasses nearly covering half of her small face.
Jian Ming jumped off the bed and put on his shoes. He needed to escape this room, to get away from Simple.
As soon as Simple entered, Jian Ming knew he couldn't do anything, not even close his eyes to rest or think about anything.
She was quite a lively person, her thoughts as simple as her name, yet she had a curious mind that liked to ask questions about everything, often leaving people speechless and ultimately surrendering.
"Are you going out?" Seeing Jian Ming putting on his shoes, Simple followed him and asked.
"Yeah, just going out for a bit. It's stuffy at home," Jian Ming replied while tidying up his clothes.
Rather than waiting around passively, it was better to take the initiative. Just earlier, when Jian Ming was lying on the bed, he regretted his indecisive nature for missing the chance to ask a classmate for Shaw Min's address. He always thought there would be plenty of opportunities later, but sometimes, once certain things and people are missed, they become lost chances.
