"I dare not," Lin Xi turned her face to the side, startled as she shook off the teacher's hand. She was worried that the teacher wanted her to retrieve the snake from the drawer.
"You're still afraid?" the teacher retorted.
"There’s no snake in your drawer at all. Are you trying to disrupt the class on purpose? Other teachers say you're a good student, and you've been recognized as an outstanding student every year. Is this how you act like a good student?" The teacher's words were laced with sarcasm.
"Teacher, how can you say that? How can you talk about Lin Xi like that?" Suddenly, Lu Chenyu stood up from his seat and spoke to the teacher.
Lin Xi looked at Lu Chenyu in surprise; she hadn't expected him to stand up for her at that moment.
"Teacher, I didn't mean to disrupt the order. I really saw a snake in my drawer just now," Lin Xi defended herself, feeling wronged.
Perhaps the teacher also felt that his earlier words were a bit excessive. He glanced at Lu Chenyu and fell silent.
However, to prove he was not mistaken, the teacher reached into the drawer again.
"Look, I've taken everything out of the drawer. Where is the snake you mentioned?" The teacher's tone softened as he looked at Lin Xi.
"Ah!" Lin Xi widened her eyes.
She cautiously walked over to her desk and bent down to look inside the drawer. Indeed, as the teacher said, there was no plastic box containing a small snake.
Lin Xi rubbed her eyes. Could it be that her vision had blurred just now? But it had been so clear!
She rummaged through the items on her desk but still couldn't find the transparent plastic box.
What was going on?
The teacher shot a glare at Lin Xi and returned to the podium.
Although Lu Chenyu had just stood up to criticize him for being a bit excessive in his earlier remarks, it turned out he was right. So after returning to the podium, the teacher continued to ramble about what had just happened and demanded that Lin Xi write a self-reflection for him.
He also said, "As a student, the most basic requirement is not to lie. As a girl, you should be calm and dignified. Even if you truly see a snake, you must remain composed and not scream or lose your grace as a lady, which would undermine your standing as an exemplary student."
As he spoke, he glanced at Lu Chenyu again.
Sure enough, his words angered Lu Chenyu.
In an instant, Lu Chenyu stood up from his seat, pulled something out of his drawer, and walked straight to the podium, placing the item on the desk.
A small green snake, about the length of a chopstick, slowly wriggled in a transparent plastic box.
The entire class gasped in shock. Upon seeing the snake again, Lin Xi screamed in terror.
The teacher was also startled by the sudden appearance of the soft and terrifying creature wriggling in front of him, gasping and stepping back a few paces.
Then he shouted loudly, "Lu Chenyu, what are you doing? Are you threatening me?"
The teacher's voice was not just angry; it was almost frantic, his hand holding the chalk trembling with rage.
"I’m not threatening you, teacher. I just wanted to show you that Lin Xi really did see a snake; it's right here," Lu Chenyu said defiantly, looking up.
"Please take your thing back!" The teacher's face turned pale as he threw the chalk down hard onto the desk and said sternly.
"What's the point of proving that Lin Xi has indeed seen this snake? Does it justify her behavior today? Does it prove that her disruption of the class was correct?" The teacher scanned the classroom and continued.
"But at least it shows she wasn't lying today. You just said she was lying," Lu Chenyu stubbornly held his head high.
The teacher was momentarily speechless, unable to respond.
"And you!" The teacher suddenly pointed angrily at Lu Chenyu. "You intentionally disrupted the class today, didn't you? Lin Xi's actions today can be entirely attributed to you. As the saying goes, 'One who associates with good people becomes good; one who associates with bad people becomes bad!' When you and Mr. Li arranged the seating, I warned him that you would definitely lead Lin Xi astray. Now it's come true, hasn't it? I said he shouldn't have accepted you, or at least should have seated you separately."
"That's enough, Lu Chenyu!" Just as Lu Chenyu stretched his neck to continue arguing with the teacher, he suddenly heard Lin Xi shout.
Instantly, the entire class turned to look at Lin Xi, including the teacher standing at the podium.
Lu Chenyu turned to look at Lin Xi and saw her face full of tears.
She walked up to the podium, stood in front of the teacher, bowed deeply, and said, "Teacher, I'm sorry. Today is all my fault."
The teacher was taken aback by Lin Xi's sudden action. He pushed up his glasses and awkwardly said, "You were wrong today, but I just realized that the main person at fault today is Lu Chenyu. You can go back to your seat now! We need to start class; I'll talk to you after class."
Then the teacher pointed at Lu Chenyu. "After class, you also need to come to my office."
After class, both Lin Xi and Lu Chenyu went to the teacher's office.
It was unclear what the teacher told them, but it was said that the math teacher also called their homeroom teacher, Mr. Li, to his office.
When they returned, Lu Chenyu kept his head down while Lin Xi's face was streaked with tears.
After returning to her seat, the situation returned to how it was when they first sat together, with Lin Xi turning her entire body and face away from Lu Chenyu.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to," Lu Chenyu quietly apologized to Lin Xi, trying to make amends.
At that moment, it was the end of class, and the classroom was filled with noise and commotion.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash as desks and chairs were moved and fell over.
"Are you still saying you didn't mean it? If you did it on purpose, what would it have been like?" Lin Xi shouted at Lu Chenyu, standing in front of him.
Lu Chenyu sat in his seat, staring at Lin Xi with a stunned expression on his face.
He opened his mouth, wanting to argue a bit, but when he saw the tears beginning to well up in Lin Xi's eyes, he swallowed the words that were about to come out.
Lin Xi fixed her gaze on him, her lips trembling slightly.
She recalled his arrogant and indifferent words in the teacher's office. She remembered the disdainful look from the teacher directed at both of them. She thought of the math teacher's regretful tone when talking to the homeroom teacher about how Lin Xi had changed for the worse since being with Lu Chenyu.
A stream of unjust tears slowly slid down her face.
At that moment, the classroom suddenly fell silent, all eyes turned towards her and Lu Chenyu. Lu Chenyu scanned all the classmates in the classroom and his lips moved slightly. "What's wrong, Lin Xi?" His voice was soft, like a boy in love speaking tenderly to a girl.
