After leaving the teacher's office, Lin Xi felt a bit regretful about what she had just told Mr. Li regarding Lu Chenyu. She thought she had done something quite dishonorable today. If the teacher found out that he was indeed doing something bad online or elsewhere, would he take any harsh measures against him?
For instance, would he send him to another class, or rearrange his seat to isolate him, or even expel him outright?
In the past, hadn't other subject teachers suggested such punishments for Mr. Li?
"No, I need to figure out his whereabouts and movements before Mr. Li investigates him. I have to help him correct himself early so that nothing bad happens."
With this thought in mind, Lin Xi quickened her pace.
After school, as soon as Lu Chenyu stepped out of the classroom, Lin Xi packed her things and quietly followed behind him.
However, after several days of following him, she noticed that he exhibited no unusual behavior on the way home; he went straight back every time.
There were even days when Lin Xi waited downstairs at his building for a while but didn’t see him come out again.
During school hours, Lin Xi also took detours to wait downstairs a few times, but when it was almost time for class, he still didn’t come down from upstairs. She had no choice but to rush to class alone, which meant that for those few days, Lin Xi arrived at the classroom just as the bell rang.
On several occasions, she even ran into Lu Chenyu at the classroom door. He looked at her with a strange expression while she lowered her head like a thief, too shy to meet his gaze as she squeezed past him into the classroom.
However, what reassured Lin Xi was that ever since she spoke to Mr. Li about his situation, although he still arrived at school just as the bell rang and always seemed rushed, he had hardly been late again.
One day after school, Lu Chenyu hurriedly packed his things and dashed out of the classroom.
Initially, Lin Xi didn’t plan to follow him anymore, but after walking for a while, she noticed that a math assignment due that evening was quietly lying in his drawer; he had forgotten to take it.
If it were any other teacher's assignment left incomplete, it might not be a big deal. But the math teacher despised students who failed to complete their homework for any excuse—especially him, as the math teacher had always held a bias against him.
Lin Xi took the assignment from the drawer and thought for a moment.
"Although this guy is quite annoying, I can't bear to let the math teacher humiliate him in front of the whole class."
Lin Xi quickly packed her things and grabbed her backpack to chase after him.
As soon as she arrived at the school gate station, Lin Xi saw Lu Chenyu jump onto a bus.
Wait, that's strange. He usually heads home in the left direction; why is he taking a bus going to the right today?
Could something be wrong?
Lin Xi quickly thought of something and hurriedly followed the crowd to board the same bus, squeezing in behind him once she got on.
He sat down in a window seat and immediately took out a book from his backpack to read.
Wow! He seems so focused, Lin Xi was surprised again.
The bus arrived at a stop near the city center hospital, and Lu Chenyu put his book back into his backpack and got off.
Lin Xi followed him off the bus.
She stealthily trailed behind him until they entered the Intensive Care Unit of the city center hospital.
Oh, Lin Xi was stunned again.
Through the viewing window of a patient room, Lin Xi saw Lu Chenyu and their homeroom teacher, Mr. Li, inside. They had their backs to the door and were talking, as if Mr. Li was explaining something to Lu Chenyu.
On the hospital bed lay an elderly man with white hair, gravely ill.
After a while, Mr. Li came out of the room. Lin Xi quickly stepped aside to hide.
Once Mr. Li left, Lin Xi stood at the door for a moment longer and saw Lu Chenyu carefully tending to the elderly man in bed. After a while, he went out to buy himself a Bento Box Meal and sat beside the old man, eating while also taking out another book to read.
While he was out getting food, a doctor happened to come in, so Lin Xi asked about the patient's condition.
"Who are you?" The doctor looked at Lin Xi with a wary expression.
"Oh, it's like this. The boy taking care of this patient is my classmate," Lin Xi said as she took out Lu Chenyu's exam paper from her backpack, which already had his name written on it.
Lin Xi brought the exam paper in front of the doctor and pointed to the name on it, saying, "Look, this is Lu Chenyu, my deskmate. This exam paper is our homework for tonight, but he left it on his desk. I specifically came to deliver it to him."
"Oh, I see," the doctor adjusted his glasses and nodded approvingly. "You students are really good, helping each other out and treating your elders well. Especially this Lu Chenyu; it's not easy for him, not simple at all."
"Oh?" Lin Xi looked at the doctor in surprise.
"His parents have been working away for a long time, and at home, he only has his grandfather and grandmother. The one lying in bed is his grandmother," the doctor gestured towards the ward. "Since after the New Year, his grandmother has been ill, and his grandfather's health isn't good either. He has been taking care of both elderly people while also managing his studies. Last night, when his grandmother's condition suddenly worsened, he took her to the hospital by himself. He stayed with us doctors until the early hours of the morning and then kept watch over his grandmother until he went to school in the morning."
"He has been taking care of his grandparents all by himself?" Lin Xi looked at the doctor with wide eyes in disbelief.
"Yes! You're his deskmate; didn't you know? His homeroom teacher Mr. Li seems to be aware of his situation. This morning, after Lu Chenyu went to school, Mr. Li came here to take care of his grandmother."
"What? Mr. Li knows too?" At that moment, Lin Xi felt extremely ashamed, wishing she could find a hole to hide in.
As Lu Chenyu's classmate, deskmate, and class committee member, she realized that she had shown him too little concern.
They had been deskmates for nearly two years, yet she had only focused on his shortcomings and never tried to understand him or discover his strengths.
Last time he even mentioned in front of Mr. Li that she helped him with his studies. Remembering his words made Lin Xi feel deeply embarrassed. She initially intended to catch him doing something wrong but ended up feeling like she was the one doing something wrong.
To avoid putting Lu Chenyu in such an awkward situation, Lin Xi handed the exam paper to the doctor. "Doctor, please pass this exam paper to Lu Chenyu." After saying that, she felt as if she had been caught stealing and ran out of the hospital with an extremely uncomfortable and embarrassed feeling.
