That night, the sky was filled with stars, twinkling playfully like Lin Xi's bright black eyes, gazing at the tall Lu Chenyu beside her.
Lin Xi knew that with Lu Chenyu's intelligence and his serious attitude towards studying later on, along with the progress he made before the college entrance examination, his test scores would not be worse than hers. Therefore, going to Beijing should not be a problem.
At that moment, Lin Xi's words were not a question or a request for his opinion; they were sincere.
They had just reached the edge of the track on the sports field, where there was a gently sloping lawn. Above the slope was the office area for the school teachers, facing the classroom area, and behind it lay the sports field. A row of lush Phoenix Trees lined the sloping bank, their dense branches stretching over the track.
Suddenly, Lu Chenyu stopped beneath a French Sycamore.
Outside the shade of the tree, the moonlight was bright and clear. However, beneath the Phoenix Tree, light and shadow intertwined in a hazy night. Yet Lin Xi could still clearly see Lu Chenyu's dark eyes furrowed in concentration as he looked down at her.
At the same time, she could distinctly hear the sound of his heartbeat.
She stood half-tilted under his gaze.
The two of them remained in that position on the silent track for a long time.
Until she forgot to breathe, forgot her awareness, forgot her heartbeat, Lin Xi realized she was already in Lu Chenyu's embrace. He held her gently as she leaned against his chest, listening to his heartbeat.
"Why don't you go to Beijing too? Let's both go to Beijing, okay?" Lin Xi murmured softly.
"Mm." Lu Chenyu nodded lightly. "Wherever you go, I will go."
As he spoke those words, his voice seemed to come from deep underground—low and whispering in Lin Xi's ear.
Later that night, beneath that ancient French Sycamore, a patch of shade fell on Lu Chenyu's shoulder while his face was illuminated. He kissed her.
It was quick and electric; first, he lightly brushed against her lips. Her lips were warm and soft. Gradually, he deepened the kiss little by little—gentle yet tinged with fervor and wildness—until she completely surrendered in his embrace.
After returning home, Jia Zhilan had not yet come back. Lin Wenhui was still quietly preparing lessons in his study. The television in the living room continued to play The Grand Mansion starring Siqin Gaowa and Chen Baoguo, as if nothing had happened and everything remained unchanged from when she left.
But Lin Xi knew that the moon had moved to another side and the way the stars twinkled had changed; her heart had already been stolen by him.
She tiptoed back to her room and lay on her bed. As thoughts of him flooded her mind again, she felt a profound and intense realization: he had entered her life. She imagined their future struggles together in Beijing and how they would plan their lives ahead.
Love is so mysterious; in an instant, it can determine separations and reunions. No matter when it comes, it always arrives unexpectedly and departs just as suddenly.
Lin Xi's love arrived unexpectedly, without time to think.
That night, she felt excited, confused, determined, and calm all at once. She couldn't sleep, tossing and turning until she finally drifted off in the deep of night.
Later, they went on a few more dates, but they were all during the day. They held hands and strolled sweetly and openly down the street.
While shopping, they mentioned several times where they would study. Lin Xi always spoke dreamily, saying, "Beijing, of course Beijing. It has to be Beijing—the city full of mystery and depth is the place I long for the most."
"Can't you just stay in Provincial Capital?" Lu Chenyu asked Lin Xi during one of these conversations.
"No way, it has to be Beijing," Lin Xi replied playfully and firmly.
After the exam results came out, they had another phone call. As Lin Xi expected, Lu Chenyu did well. During the call, Lin Xi teased him that if he had been a good student from the start, he might have achieved even better results.
However, Lu Chenyu only chuckled a couple of times on the phone; his mood seemed less enthusiastic than Lin Xi had imagined—almost a bit down.
Nevertheless, before filling out their applications, they spoke on the phone several times to confirm their plans and agreed to meet on the day of application submission.
But when it was time to fill out the applications, Lin Xi searched everywhere for him at the venue but couldn't find Lu Chenyu.
Holding her application form, Lin Xi was reluctant to fill it out. Next to her, Lin Wenhui kept urging her, "Hurry up and fill it out! Let's go home early; it's really hot today. The sun will be even harsher outside later."
The school had already been discussed between Lin Xi and her parents, so from Lin Wenhui's perspective, there was no need for further hesitation.
After waiting for Lu Chenyu without success and feeling pressured by her dad from behind, Lin Xi ultimately filled out her application for the school she had agreed upon with her family and with Lu Chenyu.
Once back home and with her family absent, Lin Xi called Lu Chenyu. She said, "I've filled out my application. Have you done yours? Why didn't I see you today?"
There was a long silence on the other end before his voice finally came through. "I... I haven't filled mine out yet. There were some things at home today; I'll go fill it out tomorrow."
"Oh, then hurry up and do it! You only have three days to submit your application," Lin Xi reminded him.
"Okay," he replied before hanging up the phone.
The day after submitting their applications, Lin Xi couldn't help but call him again. "Did you fill out your application?" Lin Xi asked.
"I did," his voice sounded a bit weary.
"Oh, that's good," Lin Xi said happily.
Later, during the call, he remained silent while Lin Xi rambled on about where they might go to play during the summer vacation and things like registering together after school started.
It wasn't until the third day, while shopping with a few classmates who had applied to schools in Beijing, that she learned from them that Lu Chenyu hadn't applied to any schools in Beijing at all.
After returning home, Lin Xi frantically called him, urging him to change his application.
But he replied on the phone, "I've already submitted my application."
Lin Xi collapsed into her chair, feeling helpless as she asked, "Why? Didn't we agree to all go to Beijing?"
"I can't go to Beijing," he answered softly and gloomily.
"Why can't you go to Beijing? Your scores are so high. Even if you don't want to be at the same school or in the same major as me, there are still many schools in Beijing for you to choose from." Lin Xi cried and shouted on the phone, as if half of her life had been lost.
"Why? Why?" These were the words Lin Xi choked out before hanging up the phone.
