In summary, during the process of working with Xu Wen, he took great care of Qinglan and seemed to have a good impression of her.
Of course, he also left a very positive impression on Qinglan.
So, it’s not just when he stands in front of Qinglan; even when she suddenly thinks of his name, his handsome smiling face makes her heart inexplicably flustered.
However, he does not know that the one vote he is missing between him and An Shaojie is because she voted for An Shaojie, knowing that An Shaojie needed to be elected as class monitor.
It wasn't until his back disappeared from the classroom that Qinglan lifted her head.
She thought everyone in the classroom had left, leaving only her behind. But when she looked up suddenly, she found someone still sitting in the corner.
A sharp and cold gaze, like that of an eagle, was fixed on the podium.
Oh! Qinglan was standing on the podium. Just a moment ago, she and Xu Wen were congratulating each other up there. At that time, many people were coming in and out of the classroom, and Qinglan hadn’t noticed that such a cold gaze had been watching her all along.
“Brother Shaojie!” Qinglan called out to him involuntarily, just like when they were kids.
On the desk in front of him lay a book. He picked it up and slammed it down on the desk with force before standing up and exiting through the back door of the classroom.

“Hey! It’s only been a few days since school started, and everyone is still getting familiar with our campus environment, let alone Beijing. You’re already planning to take them out for fun? And to go for a picnic in the suburbs? With so many classes, many students haven’t even adapted to their studies yet, and you’re thinking about playing? Why didn’t you consider organizing study activities instead?”
In the corridor outside the classroom, Xu Wen was holding several books under his arm as he prepared to enter for class. The next class was Advanced Mathematics, and surprisingly, the teacher for this course was a young and beautiful woman who had just graduated with a PhD in Mathematics. She taught exceptionally well, and students from several classes liked attending her lectures, often arriving early to secure seats.
Moreover, this course was a required subject for their major's graduate entrance exams, so seniors who hadn’t mastered it well often came to audit her classes. The classroom was usually packed.
Xu Wen also arrived early to secure a seat, sitting in one of the front rows to listen attentively.
In the corridor, he saw An Shaojie yelling at Qinglan as if he were a teacher scolding a student. Qinglan stood obediently in front of him with her head lowered.
"What’s going on? An Shaojie." Although Xu Wen was not elected as the class monitor, he was still a member of the organizing committee! It was only right to ask about the situation, so he stopped at the classroom door to inquire.
He could never understand it. It was said that Qinglan and An Shaojie came from the same place and had been classmates from elementary school through high school, so they should have had a close relationship. Yet, their interactions always seemed awkward to outsiders.
Moreover, Xu Wen always felt that An Shaojie was intentionally bullying Qinglan, while Qinglan seemed somewhat afraid of him. Oh! Not afraid, to be precise; she was always tolerating him.
Why? Xu Wen did not understand.
"None of your business!" An Shaojie merely lifted his eyelids slightly.
"An Shaojie, what kind of work attitude is that? What do you mean it's none of my business?" Even Xu Wen's usually good temper and demeanor were left speechless by An Shaojie's repeated barbs.
"I don't agree with organizing such activities. Even if you do organize them, I won't participate," An Shaojie said and then entered the classroom.
He did not respond to Xu Wen's words and passed by him without even a glance, as if they had a deep-seated grudge against each other.
Xu Wen watched his back, tilting his head in thought.
What’s going on? We just became classmates; there hasn’t been any conflict between us. Why is he starting to act hostile towards me?
The outdoor cooking event fell through. A few days later, Xu Wen found Qinglan and told her about planning a study activity.
"A study activity? How would we do that?" Qinglan remembered that An Shaojie had mentioned why they shouldn't hold study activities. However, when she asked the previous senior sisters and brothers, almost all their suggested activity plans were for fun rather than studying.
"I've already thought of something," Xu Wen said. "We could organize a book exchange activity where we recommend good books we've read, introduce them, and discuss them. What do you think?"
Without even thinking, Qinglan nodded her head enthusiastically like a rattle drum. "Yes, great! How come I didn't think of that?" She almost clapped with joy, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Looking at Qinglan's radiant smile, Xu Wen felt a slight stir in his heart. Why had he never seen An Shaojie make her smile when they worked together?
The book exchange activity was organized very successfully. Later on, based on the reading event, they initiated a Class Newsletter activity. The organizing committee member Xu Wen, publicity committee member Ji Yelan, group secretary Qinglan, and class monitor An Shaojie were responsible for the Class Newsletter, dividing tasks for collecting articles, designing layouts, promoting it, and facilitating communication.
On the way back to the dormitory, Qinglan walked alone, holding a book as she strolled along the dark tree-lined path.
"Qinglan," Xu Wen called from behind her, quickly catching up to walk alongside her.
Xu Wen and Qinglan continued discussing the Class Newsletter, including how often to publish it, the format of submissions, content, and the layout.
As they spoke, An Shaojie happened to pass by them without a greeting.
"Hey, An Shaojie!" Xu Wen called out to him.
"What is it?" An Shaojie asked coldly as Xu Wen and Qinglan approached him.
"Could we, the few people in charge of the Class Newsletter, find some time to meet again and go over the specific details? We hope to get an issue out by the end of this month," Xu Wen said in a negotiating tone.
"Do you know what date it is today?" An Shaojie raised an eyebrow and asked bluntly.
"It's the twentieth. Why?" Xu Wen replied, puzzled.
Qinglan stood between the two, glancing back and forth at their faces and eyes, sensing a tense atmosphere beginning to build.
"There's only ten days left. You haven't even discussed the details yet, and you want to put out a Class Newsletter? Do you think that's possible? Isn't that a bit too eager for results?" A hint of disdainful mockery curled at the corners of An Shaojie's mouth as he turned his face away, clearly not wanting to look at Xu Wen and Qinglan. In his view, these two were just trying to find excuses to be together; if they wanted to spend time together, that was their business. There was no need to involve others. He needed to study; at the end of the semester, he needed to secure a scholarship. His ambition to be class president was also for that scholarship.
"Hey, An Shaojie, can you be clearer with your words?" Although Xu Wen was usually gentle-natured, he could become anxious at times. "Where am I being overly eager or utilitarian? Getting the first issue out early is just a trial run. Some issues are inevitable; this way we can identify problems early on and resolve them so we can publish normally next month."
