An Shaojie held the crumpled photocopy of his identification and his real ID in his hand, suddenly letting out a long sigh, "Hard work pays off!" Tears streamed down from the corners of his eyes.
Although he didn't know where to go next or how to calm the excitement in his heart, he knew he wouldn't be going to the library anymore.
Sitting in the library would only waste his time; he had lost the desire to read.
He was not someone who wanted to waste time feeling anxious or daydreaming, so he needed to find a place to quiet himself down or find something to distract his attention.
After putting the scrap paper back into his pocket, he quickly walked towards the dormitory building.
Once back at the dormitory, An Shaojie began his search. Holding the scrap paper, he went from building to building, room by room, asking new students, "Is there a girl by this name in your class?"
"No."
"No."
"Don't know her."
For several days, whenever he had free time, he would move back and forth between the boys' dormitories, asking in different colleges and class dorms. He even showed the photocopy of the ID to people he met on the road.
With perseverance comes success. After a few days, finally, a boy in the boys' dorm area pointed at Lin Xi's name and said, "I know her; she's in our class."
"Really?!" An Shaojie grabbed the boy's shirt, almost pulling him along to find her, his eyes shining with excitement.
The boy was startled by his intensity and pulled his shirt back from An Shaojie's grip. "Are you crazy?!"
Who would chase after a girl like this?
"Wait, wait! Sorry, man. Can you tell me your college and class?" An Shaojie finally calmed down.
"Business School, Modern Economic Management Major, Class 10-2." The boy walked quite a distance before turning around and shouting back at An Shaojie.
"Thanks, man!" An Shaojie called out while standing on tiptoe to shout at his retreating figure.
Hehe, An Shaojie looked at the crumpled piece of paper in his hand and chuckled to himself.
"Chasing girls has turned him into a madman, unbelievable," the boy shook his head in disbelief.
The next day, before An Shaojie could find Lin Xi, the news had already spread like wildfire in Lin Xi's class. A boy had become infatuated with her, reportedly searching for her frantically in the boys' dormitory area for half a month.
"Hey! Lin Xi, the beautiful girl, truly is the campus flower. Her charm is irresistible; even boys from other departments are going crazy. I heard it's a guy from the Physics Department. Those guys are all smart; we definitely have to see this today!"
Lin Xi's class was in Classroom 405 of Building 2 for Advanced Mathematics. It wasn't time for class yet, and Su Hailu, sitting next to Lin Xi, tapped her shoulder with a meaningful look.
"What’s up?"
Since arriving at class early that morning, Lin Xi had already been teased by her classmates several times. From the moment she heard someone was looking for her using a copy of her ID card, she went from being confused to feeling flattered and embarrassed, and now to a calm indifference. Her heart had gone through a long, unshared journey of memories.
She seemed to have realized who the person searching for her was.
At the same time, she recalled the day of registration when she squeezed out of the crowd and noticed a familiar figure following her for quite some time.
"The boy looking for me is probably an older brother from my hometown," Lin Xi whispered gently into Su Hailu's ear.
"What?!" Su Hailu jumped up from her seat. "He's your Childhood Sweetheart's brother? That's even more intriguing! I definitely want to see him." She nearly shouted.
In that moment, Lin Xi realized that talking to someone as loud as Su Hailu was her own foolishness and mistake.
Sure enough, as soon as Su Hailu finished speaking, the tide of curiosity among their classmates surged again, drawn in by her words.
"Wow, he's your Childhood Sweetheart! A childhood friend turned romantic interest! This could lead to a legendary love story."
Various teasing voices filled the air. Lin Xi felt her face flush with embarrassment and decided to leave the classroom. Su Hailu, always lively, continued shouting after Lin Xi's disappearing figure at the door, "The young man rides his bamboo horse and circles around the bed with green plums."
When Lin Xi returned to the classroom later, Su Hailu no longer called her "Lin Xi," but instead shouted "Green Plum" repeatedly.
Under her lead, other classmates gradually began calling Lin Xi "Green Plum" as well.
Lin Xi was at a loss for words, but she gradually got used to being called that by others.
"Qingmei, can I hand my homework to you this afternoon?" Lin Xi, the class representative, heard a male classmate shouting from the back of the classroom, his voice mixed with whistling.
"Classmate Qingmei!"
"What is it? What do you want?" Someone kept calling her from the back of the classroom. Lin Xi turned around and glared at the person, frowning in annoyance.
"What should I do if I haven't submitted my homework?" The boy continued to ask with a cheeky grin.
"Take it to the teacher's office yourself, what else can you do!" Lin Xi huffed as she sat down, ignoring them.
That day, Lin Xi thought An Shaojie would come to find her downstairs in their dormitory, so she stayed in her room all night. However, by ten o'clock that evening, she still hadn't heard her name being called from the duty room downstairs.
In the following days, no one came to find her. Lin Xi thought her guess was wrong. Until the weekend, after dinner, Su Hailu invited Lin Xi to go to the library together. Su Hailu lived next door to Lin Xi and had announced during their first class meeting that she wouldn't date during college and would focus all her energy on studying. She set various plans for herself, including passing every course with an A, achieving a high score on the TOEFL, and going abroad before graduation. Therefore, she always spent her weekends studying in the library.
Lin Xi tidied up the books on her desk and picked up a book titled "Standards and Representatives of Beauty in Modern and Contemporary China," placing it into her handbag as she prepared to leave with Su Hailu.
"Classmate Lin Xi from Room 402, someone is looking for you downstairs." Just as Lin Xi and Su Hailu reached the dormitory door, they suddenly heard an announcement over the loudspeaker.
Lin Xi and Su Hailu exchanged glances. "Could it be that Zhu Ma has come? Qingmei has been eagerly waiting for him these past few days, and he only shows up now?" Su Hailu looked at Lin Xi with curiosity as if she were witnessing something extraordinary. Lin Xi raised her bag and tossed it onto Su Hailu's back. "Go ahead; I didn't want to go study with you anyway. You can go alone; bye!" Lin Xi pushed Su Hailu out the door, turned around to pull out the book from her bag, and tossed it onto her desk from a distance while waving goodbye to Su Hailu nonchalantly.
