That night, Lin Xi seemed to forget what she and An Shaojie had talked about; she only felt that walking beside him was both familiar and somewhat strange. The memories of their childhood had never faded from her mind, so she naturally called him "Brother Shaojie." Time seemed to revert to their childhood as they walked together along the small path in Liu Family Village, going to school and coming home together. An Shaojie remained the familiar companion from her youth.
When reminiscing about their childhood, Lin Xi occasionally giggled at An Shaojie's words. If something amused her, she would still punch him playfully on the back and shake his arm just like she did when they were kids. When he said something inappropriate, she would stomp her foot in mock anger, scolding him with a warmth that still carried an air of authority. Despite the passage of over a decade, all her childish antics and playful demeanor came back to her in front of him, and Lin Xi felt completely at ease.
However, when their conversation shifted to the time after Lin Xi left Liu Family Village, the atmosphere became somewhat heavy, as if they were two strangers suddenly at a loss for small talk.
Indeed, after more than ten years apart, so many people and events had come and gone in their respective worlds. The once-familiar companions had not intersected at all during those years, making their conversation feel awkward and stilted.
This was especially true for An Shaojie. In the years since parting ways with Lin Xi, if he didn't talk about Qinglan, who else could he discuss? He had no close friends and no fresh or interesting experiences to share; his life had been uneventful, with no one leaving a memorable mark in his recollections.
Except for Qinglan, who had always accompanied him like a shadow.
Yet in reality, there was little to say about her either because almost nothing had happened between them except for their silence.
Not only was there nothing to discuss, but in this rare occasion that An Shaojie had waited over a decade for, he was also reluctant to bring her up. Moreover, he couldn't talk about her; he preferred to reminisce about the warm past he shared with Lin Xi.
But how much could they really reminisce about when they were just children back then?
Of course, for An Shaojie, there was a deep longing for Lin Xi and a desire to see her again. However, could he express that longing and desire to her? His sensitive nature and self-imposed constraints made it clear that he would not easily speak of such feelings.
So that night, for Lin Xi, it felt as if she and An Shaojie were like two parallel tracks—harmoniously coexisting and closely connected yet unable to intersect.
However, for An Shaojie, he believed that night would mark the beginning of a new chapter in his life; it was an evening where he finally saw the moonlight after waiting for over a decade.
After returning to the dormitory, he still felt as if he were in a dream, completely unable to remember the content of his conversation with Lin Xi. Even the places they walked through seemed to fade from his memory, as if he had been abruptly awakened from a dream. Everything that night appeared to An Shaojie like a hazy dream.
Yet, he firmly remembered the starry sky and the bright moonlight that night.
He had a smile on his face throughout the evening, an absolutely genuine smile, without a hint of pretense. It was mostly Lin Xi who talked and asked questions; he listened and responded with laughter, as if they had walked together from the moment Lin Xi left Liu Family Village until they arrived at the campus of a prestigious university, illuminated by dreamlike lights.
Even after returning to the dormitory, his smile remained, transitioning from a dreamy feeling back to reality. Standing in front of his roommates, he felt an overwhelming sense of happiness, so much so that his roommates were taken aback by his rare, heartfelt smile.
"Wow! The Class Leader is back! What’s got you so happy?" one roommate asked with a mischievous grin while patting him on the shoulder.
Since he usually appeared serious, his roommates were somewhat restrained in their attempts to joke with him, careful not to overstep boundaries.
An Shaojie nodded and smiled. It was rare for him to respond to his roommates' inquiries! Although he didn’t use words, his nod and smile were enough to astonish them and firmly convince them that An Shaojie must have some good news tonight.
But what good news could An Shaojie possibly have? Aside from achieving top marks in exams that could make him beam with joy, what else could it be?
It must be about that girl he had been searching for over several days with a torn piece of paper.
An Shaojie had almost searched every department in the school for Lin Xi; this matter was well-known among students, not to mention among his gossip-loving roommates.
Seeing An Shaojie's apparent good mood tonight, one of the more playful roommates boldly approached him, draping an arm over An Shaojie's shoulder with a mysterious smile and quietly yet audibly asking everyone around, "Could it be that you’ve made progress?"
"What progress?" An Shaojie replied knowingly, maintaining a restrained yet unassuming happy smile on his face.
"Wow, the boss has turned bad too. Is he trying to get us all to speak plainly?" Another person joined the conversation.
"Of course, the boss is quite the hidden gem. Does everyone remember what he said to us on the first night of school?"
It was still that cheeky guy who was preparing to climb up to the upper bunk to sleep. Seeing that everyone had opened up, he became even more interested, giving up his plan to go to bed. He walked to the center of the dormitory, scanned everyone around, shook his head, and said in a strange voice, "‘During college, I won’t date!’ Who said that back then?"
After saying this, his eyes swept over each person's face one by one.
"It wasn't me, don't look at me," the chubby guy quickly waved his hands.
"I've always wanted to date, but no one gives me a chance," a studious-looking guy with glasses hurriedly clarified.
"Xu Wen, what about you?" Noticing that Xu Wen, who was sitting at the desk reading, hadn't spoken up, the cheeky guy couldn't help but lift his face and ask him. "Xu Wen replied without turning or looking up, 'I never said that. But love is something you can’t force; it comes naturally.'"
"Xu Wen didn't say that either. Then..." The cheeky guy slowly walked in front of An Shaojie. "Class Leader, I definitely didn't say that; you know I'm taken and couldn't possibly say such a thing. So if I remember correctly, it should have been you who said it, right, Class Leader?"
