So, when An Shaojie stood in front of Lin Xi again, he felt a brief moment of unease before his face returned to a natural smile, more genuine than ever before.
His natural smile was as radiant as the sunshine in May!
"Well, good!" The smile on his face deepened. "So should I call you at the bottom of your dorm building this weekend, or will you come wait for me?"
He no longer pursued her but adopted a stance of classmates and friends.
Lin Xi smiled slightly and said, "The weekend is still far away; today is only Monday. The question is, what do you plan to do now?"
"Me?" An Shaojie replied with an unexpectedly cheerful laugh from Lin Xi. "You know me; I've never been good at anything since I was little, except studying and reading."
He chuckled lightly, laughing candidly. "I'm just going to the library to read. What about you?"
"Me?" Lin Xi smiled. She found that An Shaojie, with his calm demeanor, was cuter than ever. "What did you come to find me for today?" There was a teasing tone in her voice.
"Me?" An Shaojie felt a bit shy, his toes rubbing against the ground as he laughed and said, "I came to invite you to study together."
"That's right." Lin Xi shifted the books in her arms and used one hand to pull An Shaojie's arm. "Let's go to the library and read. I haven't looked at that book we borrowed together last time!"
"Why not?" An Shaojie's voice trailed off as he walked beside Lin Xi.
"Who told you not to invite me to study later?" Lin Xi teased with a laugh.
"Weren't there a few times when I invited you, and you said you had something else going on?" An Shaojie's voice was low.
"Those times just happened to be when I had things to do!" Lin Xi laughed joyfully.
After reconciling, An Shaojie and Lin Xi seemed to return to their childhood. This time it truly felt like returning to their childhood because An Shaojie was making an effort to play the role of the young An Shaojie, while Lin Xi was merely his childhood "Lin Meimei."
Happy times are fleeting, and soon the final exams were over.
On the night of the outing, the other girls in the dormitory were shouting excitedly, as it was their time to enjoy a world of two.
It was their first experience of love and the pain of a brief separation. They all hoped to spend the night together, showing signs of reluctance to part.
Dinner time had not yet arrived, but one by one, they were called out by the shouts from downstairs or by phone calls from the dormitory, rushing out like birds set free.
Only Qinglan sat quietly in the dormitory.
Xu Wen had originally invited her to go out for dinner that evening. After dinner, he would surely have plans arranged for them to spend time together. But tonight, Qinglan just wanted to be alone in peace.
He had mentioned that Simple, Jian Ming, and Reiko would come over tonight. This was a tradition they all followed at the end of each semester. They would book tickets together and head home. On the last night, they would definitely visit Qinglan at her school, either to see her or to agree on where to meet when leaving school the next day.
In fact, this was a trivial matter that could be resolved over the phone. Simple had already communicated with Qinglan about it a few days ago; tonight she just suddenly remembered the note in her drawer.
However, to show that she indeed had an agreement with Simple beforehand, Qinglan still called Simple and chatted with her for a while.
Simple's concerns revolved around the same unchanged topics and people. "Why isn’t Brother Shaojie coming back with us? Does he have a girlfriend now?"
"I don't know." Qinglan was troubled by this matter and held in her hand a dormitory number belonging to a girl named Lin Xi, hesitating whether to seek her out again to confirm if she was indeed the Lin Xi she was looking for.
"Let me tell you some good news!" Simple said mysteriously over the phone, lowering her voice. "My brother is really dating Sister Shaomin now."
"Really dating?" Qinglan repeated Simple's words. She often found Simple's comments sudden and bold; if you didn’t ask her to elaborate further, you might misunderstand or misinterpret what she meant.
"Yes! They agreed that when my brother graduates, Sister Shaomin will come back from Shenzhen to be with him." Simple's voice was filled with excitement.
"Oh, that's great news! Congratulations to your brother and Sister Shaomin," Qinglan sincerely wished.
However, at that moment, she felt a bit distracted. Mentioning Shaw Min and Shenzhen made Qinglan think of her father and brother, who were still in Shenzhen. She wondered how they were doing now.
Since Qing Shusheng went to Shenzhen, Liu Xiuzhen had not contacted her. There was no phone at home, so she couldn't reach out to her. Qing Shusheng had only called her on the first day after arriving in Shenzhen to let her know she had arrived safely. Now, several months had passed without any news.
Qinglan suddenly felt that there were many unresolved matters on her mind. After chatting briefly with Simple, she ended the call hastily.
Simple's few simple words brought up several people, making Qinglan feel a bit irritated. She realized that avoiding certain issues only created a knot in her heart that she couldn't let go of. She hurriedly changed into clothes and shoes and went back to Lin Xi's dormitory.
"She has gone home." Lin Xi's dorm was also in disarray, with several roommates packing their things. "The train is at seven o'clock tonight; she's going home."
"Going home? The train is at seven o'clock tonight?"
Qinglan couldn't believe the outcome she was facing once again. She stood in their dormitory unwilling to leave, trying to gather more information or salvage some result.
She saw the girl she had met during her previous visits was also there, so she walked over and tapped her on the back. "Hey, hello."
The girl stared at Qinglan with a confused expression, clearly having forgotten her. "Do you remember me?" Although she knew the likely answer, Qinglan decided to persist for a little longer. The girl shook her head and continued packing her things as if Qinglan were invisible.
