During the winter break, Lu Chenyu took Lin Xi to meet his parents.
This was a meeting without any suspense, a natural progression. Lu Chenyu's parents had always liked Lin Xi, and both Lin Xi and Lu Chenyu were deeply in love with each other. The meeting was merely a formality, and the outcome was only filled with surprises, not unexpected events.
They were arranged to have dinner at a restaurant. The atmosphere that day was warm and cozy. Although Lin Xi still felt a bit nervous, Lu Chenyu held her hand under the table to ease her tension.
After dinner, Lu Chenyu's mother took the time to sit down and chat with Lin Xi for a long while, her affection for Lin Xi evident. During their conversation, she hinted at planning a trip for Lin Xi and Lu Chenyu to visit Hainan during the winter break.
"Have you ever been to Hainan?" Lu Chenyu's mother asked kindly with a warm smile.
Lin Xi shook her head, presenting a well-mannered image of a young lady, smiling but remaining silent.
"We're arranging for you and Xiao Chen to go there during the break to enjoy the scenery of Southern Country. It's quite nice," Lu Chenyu's mother said.
Lu Chenyu immediately jumped up from the sofa in excitement. "Really? Mom!" he exclaimed while grabbing his mother's hand.
"Of course it's true. You've worked hard these past few years; it hasn't been easy," his mother replied, looking up at Lu Chenyu.
In the picturesque city of Hainan in Southern Country, Lin Xi and Lu Chenyu spent several days enjoying their time together. Lu Chenyu's mother made sure all their daily needs were well taken care of.
In the evening, Lin Xi and Lu Chenyu checked into a comfortable hotel arranged by Lu Chenyu's father. The hotel owner was a classmate of Lu Chenyu's father, located some distance from the city center at the foot of a quiet mountain.
They were assigned to two adjacent standard rooms. However, the hotel was very quiet due to its location in the countryside and not many guests staying there, which made it feel even more serene.
Lin Xi watched TV alone in her room for a while as night began to fall. The darkness outside deepened gradually, and the nearby mountain appeared dark and intimidating, making Lin Xi feel a bit scared.
She knocked on Lu Chenyu's door.
"Who is it?" came Lu Chenyu's voice.
"It's me," Lin Xi replied timidly.
Lu Chenyu opened the door and saw Lin Xi standing outside with her comforter wrapped around her, her frightened eyes looking up at him.
"I'm scared; it's very dark outside," Lin Xi said, lowering her head and avoiding eye contact with him.
Lu Chenyu smiled and led Lin Xi into his room. As soon as she stepped inside, Lin Xi widened her eyes to look out of his window.
Not looking was fine, but once she did, Lin Xi felt so embarrassed that she wanted to find a hole to hide in. The curtains in her room were drawn, completely blocking out the dark night and the mountains outside.
Why hadn’t she thought to close the curtains? Lin Xi regretted it deeply.
Holding onto the blanket, she stood at the entrance of the room, too afraid to take a step forward.
"What's wrong?" Lu Chenyu asked as he approached her. "Aren't you scared? Come in."
Steeling herself, Lin Xi took a few steps forward but suddenly turned around and dashed back out. Just as her hand touched the doorknob, a pair of large hands covered her arms.
Lu Chenyu hugged her from behind.
The atmosphere in the room instantly became ambiguous, a warm breath blowing against Lin Xi's ear and neck, causing her body to tremble involuntarily and her breathing to quicken.
"Why are you going back?" Lu Chenyu whispered in her ear.
"I... I just realized I could close the curtains," Lin Xi replied in a voice as soft as a mosquito's buzz.
Lin Xi, oh Lin Xi, could you not speak so truthfully? Could you come up with a better excuse?
Lu Chenyu tightened his embrace around her and chuckled. "Silly girl, of course you need to close the curtains when sleeping. Usually at home, your mom closes them after you fall asleep, right?"
"Yes," Lin Xi nodded.
"Are you not scared anymore with the curtains closed?" Lu Chenyu asked, staring into Lin Xi's eyes.
"Yes... now I'm even more scared," Lin Xi murmured.
"Silly girl, what are you afraid of? Afraid of me? Nothing will happen; I won't do anything to you," Lu Chenyu gently touched Lin Xi's earlobe and spoke softly.
"Really?" Lin Xi turned around, lifting her face so it was right under Lu Chenyu's gaze while still in his embrace.
"Of course, silly." Lu Chenyu freed one hand to lightly scratch Lin Xi's nose. At the same time, he extended his other hand to lead her deeper into the room.
Lin Xi stood motionless by the bed.
"Silly girl, get on the bed and sleep. Aren't you tired from playing all day? We have more fun planned for tomorrow," Lu Chenyu said with a teasing smile directed at Lin Xi.
"How about you?" Lin Xi pouted, looking very innocent and reluctant.
"Me?" Lu Chenyu laughed even harder, "Of course, I'm going to bed too!" He winked at Lin Xi.
Lin Xi's delicate body twisted slightly as she raised her fist and playfully hit Lu Chenyu's chest.
Lu Chenyu caught her hand, placing it over his heart and then against his cheek. "Don't worry, sleep well. I won't touch you."
That night, Lin Xi and Lu Chenyu slept in the same bed. Lu Chenyu held Lin Xi as they slept, nothing happened, not even a kiss; they simply embraced each other gently and warmly.
In the following days while playing in Hainan, Lin Xi did not enter Lu Chenyu's room again.
After returning from Hainan, their relationship was basically recognized by both families. Their interactions were no longer as concealed as before; they were no longer shy in front of adults. They began to openly call each other to check in and had formally visited each other's homes to meet their parents.
The relationship between Lin Xi and Lu Chenyu progressed smoothly without any turbulence. Not only did they believe that things would continue to go well between them, but their parents also regarded them as future son-in-law and daughter-in-law. Discussions about their graduation placements, buying a house after graduation, getting married, and settling down began.
It felt as if the future was within reach.
Lin Xi's heart was at peace, and so was Lu Chenyu's.
So as the school year approached, they agreed to hike once more. On the way up the mountain, Lu Chenyu held Lin Xi's hand, moving forward like a couple who had weathered many storms together, heading towards the morning light at the summit. When they reached a particularly steep section known as the Ladder of Clouds, Lu Chenyu couldn't help but sing the Wedding March. Lin Xi wrapped her arms around his waist from behind and stifled a laugh. Lu Chenyu said, "Lin Xi, this Ladder of Clouds is our wedding red carpet, and the morning light is like fireworks and confetti." Everything felt so beautiful!
