When Jiang Liuying mentioned An Shaojie's name, Qinglan couldn't help but feel a bit shy. She raised her fist, ready to hit Jiang Liuying, who quickly dodged and ran away. The two of them began to circle around several desks, playfully chasing each other while laughing.
In the desolate and quiet campus, the dark Girls' Dormitory building had only one room lit up. Inside, two girls were happily enjoying their simple pleasures, filling not just their dorm room but the entire dormitory and even the whole campus with this simple joy.
The silent campus came alive with their laughter as they chased each other.
When it was time to eat, Qinglan's phone on the bed suddenly rang.
Qinglan, who was in the middle of the chase, stopped.
Who could it be? That was her first reaction.
An Shaojie? Impossible. He seemed not to know her phone number. Given his personality, it was even less likely that he would contact her, especially during mealtime.
Xu Wen? That couldn't be either. She hadn't told him she was coming to school today, which was why he hadn't gone to pick her up at the station.
Hearing the ringtone, Jiang Liuying seemed even more excited than Qinglan. "Wow, guess whose phone it is? Who is someone's true love?"
Qinglan gave Jiang Liuying a light tap on the head. "True love my foot! It definitely isn't either of those two calling."
Qinglan walked over to the bed and picked up the phone while Jiang Liuying leaned in to take a look. "Hey! It's actually Xu Wen! How boring."
After hearing Jiang Liuying's comment, Qinglan shot her a glare and walked to the dormitory door to answer the call. She was worried that Jiang Liuying might say something embarrassing for Xu Wen to hear.
"Come out; let's go eat together," Xu Wen said as soon as she picked up the phone.
"You..." Qinglan was speechless and shocked. "How did you know I came to school?"
"I don't know; just a feeling," Xu Wen replied.
"Really?" Qinglan said, somewhat unconvinced.
There was silence on the other end of the phone, and after a long pause, Xu Wen's deep, magnetic voice came through. "Come down, I'm waiting for you downstairs."
Qinglan rushed to the balcony and looked down.
Night had just fallen, and there were only faint lights outside. She could see a solitary figure below, standing alone against a wall plastered with various advertisements and posters. The tattered advertisement papers and posters fluttered in the wind.
In the past, no matter where he stood, he was always a sight to behold—either as serene as an ink wash landscape or as vibrant as an oil painting filled with flowers. But now, he gave off a feeling of loneliness and desolation.
A fallen leaf was lifted by the wind at his feet, and his hair and the edges of his clothes were also blown up by the cold breeze.
Qinglan ran down as if she had lost her mind.
"Hey! Hey! You promised to have dinner with us..." Liuying shouted after her retreating figure.
Downstairs.
Qinglan ran breathlessly in front of Xu Wen.
Xu Wen reached out to smooth down a few strands of hair that had been blown to her mouth by the wind. "I'm not in a hurry; why are you running like that?"
Looking into his gentle and affectionate eyes, tears slowly welled up in Qinglan's eyes. Suddenly, she hugged him tightly and buried her face in his chest, sobbing softly.
"What's wrong, Lanlan?" He cradled her face in his hands, his voice as tender as the breeze that brushed past them.
"Lanlan?" Qinglan stared at him with wide, tear-filled eyes, unable to believe that he had called her Lanlan.
This was the first time he had called her Lanlan, using a voice so gentle it made her feel weak.
She was tired, sweetly and painfully tired. She closed her eyes, letting her tears fall like beads from a broken string.
He took out a tissue and helped her wipe her tears. "Silly girl, are you unhappy to see me? Or are you so happy that it’s overwhelming? Today is Valentine's Day, don’t cry, let’s go out for dinner."
"What?" Qinglan took the tissue from Xu Wen's hand and dried her tears, looking up at him. "Today is Valentine's Day?"
"Yes." Xu Wen gently pinched Qinglan's nose and said, "You didn’t know?"
"No, that’s not right." Qinglan suddenly blurted out like a night wanderer.
"What’s not right?" Xu Wen was confused by Qinglan's words.
"Jiang Liuying is also at school, in the dormitory. She just asked me to go eat with them. I didn’t remember until you mentioned it was Valentine's Day; today is her birthday. No wonder she made plans with Mosen to come to school today," Qinglan explained.
Jiang Liuying was a typical Aquarius, born on February 14th, Valentine's Day. Her birthday was easy to remember, and almost everyone in the dorm knew it.
"Oh, I see," Xu Wen said thoughtfully.
This was indeed a tricky situation; a classmate and roommate plus a friend’s birthday meant it would be hard to refuse an invitation to dinner.
"Then we should call her down; let’s all go eat together," Xu Wen suggested.
"Okay."
After Qinglan agreed, she rushed back to the dormitory and shouted before even reaching the door, "Jiang Liuying, it’s your birthday today! Why didn’t you tell me?"
Jiang Liuying was on the phone.
She waited for a moment.
"Didn’t I just say to eat with us?" Jiang Liuying said as she hung up the phone.
"Alright." Today is her birthday, so Qinglan decided not to argue and compromised, "Now let me ask you, since tonight is both your birthday and Valentine's Day, what are you and Mosen planning to do?"
"Me and him, we’ll have dinner, and then I don’t know what else. School hasn’t started yet, it’s so quiet. The New Year hasn’t even finished, and the area around the school is deserted. We can’t afford to go to lively places. While at home, I sent Mosen a birthday message wishing him a happy Valentine's Day. After realizing it was my birthday too, we impulsively agreed to come to school, but who knew it would be this quiet when we got here?" Jiang Liuying looked a bit dejected.
"Even if it weren’t so quiet everywhere, you two wouldn’t have much fun anyway. Xu Wen is downstairs; let me go call you. We can all go eat together and then hang out. Xu Wen knows Beijing well; he can definitely help us find some fun places."
"Okay." Jiang Liuying immediately perked up and called Mosen again.
"Mosen is already downstairs," Liuying said.
After the four of them met downstairs, Qinglan seemed to be the one with something on her mind, losing the excitement she had earlier.
"Is An Shaojie also coming to school? Let’s call him!" Xu Wen quietly asked as he walked over to Qinglan.
Qinglan was taken aback and stammered, "H-how do you know... he’s here?"
"If you’re here, how could he not be?" Xu Wen replied.
Qinglan bit her lip and lowered her head, remaining silent. Although Qinglan and Xu Wen were speaking quietly, Liuying overheard them. She said, "We definitely need to invite the class monitor; the question now is who should call him to come." Everyone exchanged glances, while only the oblivious Mosen looked at them curiously, wondering why inviting someone to dinner was so difficult when they were classmates.
