Xu Wen did not ask Qinglan the reason, as it was his principle to respect her and not inquire about personal matters.
"Then you should rest well. Go to bed early tonight. I will come downstairs to wait for you around ten tomorrow morning, so you can sleep a little longer," Xu Wen said.
After refusing Xu Wen's invitation and returning to her dormitory, Qinglan found it empty since it was the weekend and the May Day holiday was approaching. The entire dormitory building felt cold and desolate, devoid of people.
Qinglan sat idly on her bed for a while, feeling a bit anxious and restless.
Around eight-thirty, Qinglan went out for a stroll. The campus was not very crowded; many students living closer to home had gone back for the Labor Day holiday. The emptiness of the campus made Qinglan regret turning down Xu Wen's company. If he were by her side, she wouldn't feel so bored. Besides studying together, he would surely plan some other activities, preventing her from feeling so aimless.
Thinking of returning to her dormitory, she remembered that Jiang Liuying and the others were all in couples. During the holidays, they would play until it was hard to part ways and wouldn’t return to the dorm until the lights went out. Being alone in the dorm made time feel even longer.
After sitting for a while on the swing set next to the basketball court, she noticed a couple on another swing nearby whispering sweet nothings. The girl's giggles echoed occasionally as they flirted and shared tender kisses, making Qinglan's heart race with embarrassment as she watched them from afar.
She moved to another spot but found another couple being affectionate in front of her, forcing her to change places again.
Eventually, she began to wander aimlessly and unknowingly walked to the lawn where An Shaojie had forcefully kissed her that drunken night.
The place was somewhat secluded, surrounded by trees casting shadows, and with the moon hidden behind clouds, it felt even darker. When Qinglan realized she had arrived at this spot, fear crept into her heart, prompting her to turn back. However, she suddenly stumbled as if a large hand had grabbed her ankle.
She fell onto the grass.
Beside her lay someone—his hand had caught her foot and tripped her.
"Ah!" Qinglan screamed in terror.
But before she could fully cry out, her lips were covered by that person’s mouth, and with a swift motion, he pinned her down onto the grass.
Qinglan stopped screaming. The familiar scent and presence overwhelmed her senses.
He pressed Qinglan beneath him, rendering her unable to move while his wild kisses clouded all her thoughts.
He had been drinking! The strong smell of alcohol mixed with his hurried breaths brushed against Qinglan's face, ears, lips, and trailed down to her neck repeatedly.
His hands firmly pinned hers to the ground, preventing any struggle from her side.
When she felt that familiar aura in Qinglan, she had no intention of moving, allowing him to breathe heavily over her. When his lips touched hers, she not only did not resist but rather eagerly responded to him.
He released the grip he had on her hands, his kisses wandering from her lips to her pointed chin, then to her earlobe, and continued down to her neck. His hands began to frantically tug at her clothes, having already undone one of her buttons, his lips starting to descend further.
Another button was unfastened, and finally, a long, sorrowful yet incredibly captivating sound escaped his lips.
“Lanlan.”
He called out to her.
“Brother Shaojie.”
Qinglan embraced his slowly descending head, completely breaking down.
When he finally lay exhausted beside Qinglan, she realized what had transpired between them.
Tonight, let everything from tonight be forgotten! If she truly owed him, then let her repay him in a way that might bring her lifelong pain!
She had no regrets.
He was drunk, but she was not!
She was awake, always awake! Aside from his heavy breathing and gasps, and his gentle calls of "Lanlan" that left her in a daze, everything about her was clear—her consciousness, mind, memory, and body were all awake.
Although she knew he was intoxicated and might be completely unaware of what he was doing...
In a state devoid of love.
Qinglan straightened her clothes and got up to leave.
Her resolute yet stiff body paused in the darkness with her back turned to him.
Suddenly, he reached out and gently grabbed her wrist, pulling her back into his embrace.
“Why did you come here alone?” An Shaojie's deep voice sounded in Qinglan's ear. Whether it was his exhaled breath or his soft, low tone that made Qinglan's body and heart tremble violently was unclear.
Qinglan bit her lip, and even in the darkness, one could sense her shy face was surely flushed with embarrassment. She tightly clenched her teeth, twisting her body, not daring to face him or look into his eyes; her guilt left her feeling utterly lacking in confidence.
"Are you missing me? Thinking about that night?" His face was almost pressed against hers, the strong smell of alcohol still lingering on his breath, indicating he had drunk quite a bit.
His expression bore a mischievous grin and malice, completely contrasting with his usual serious and meticulous demeanor.
Qinglan turned her face away in defiance, ignoring him.
"With your personality, you probably won't go to Xu Wen's house to meet his parents tomorrow. How could you possibly face them now?" Although Qinglan was no longer facing him, he remained very close, almost pressing against her.
He reached out and playfully brushed the hair at the back of her neck, gently tucking the strands around her ear.
Qinglan remained motionless, sitting stiffly upright.
"Let's go back!" He suddenly stood up from the lawn, letting out a cold laugh through his nose.
After taking a few steps, he turned back to see Qinglan still sitting there without moving. He asked again, "Do you need me to take you back? If you do, I would be happy to help, but..." He stepped closer and spread his arms wide, saying, "I'm not as presentable as Xu Wen."
Qinglan got up from the grass but still faced away from him.
"If you're unwilling, then I'll leave first." His words were thrown over his shoulder. "Take me back," Qinglan suddenly commanded in an authoritative tone. He really did follow behind Qinglan, escorting her all the way to the dormitory building. On the way back to her dormitory, he seemed to transform completely; his face took on a serious and cold expression, his gaze steady, lips pressed tightly together. He did not say another word to Qinglan along the way.
