Seeing An Shaojie's indifferent demeanor, Qinglan also refused to back down and pretended to be unconcerned as she warmly welcomed the girl from earlier, helping her organize her things and engaging in lively conversation.
As they chatted animatedly, dinner time passed by unnoticed, and everyone eventually took out their packed meals to eat on the train.
Dinner on the train typically starts a bit later than usual. When everyone began to unpack their food, they realized how hungry they truly were. The enticing aromas wafting through the air heightened their appetites, and the previously lethargic atmosphere quickly became lively again.
Each person had their own dinner spread out on their hands or on the table, except for An Shaojie, whose hands and table were completely bare.
Qinglan chuckled to herself. She knew he never had the habit of bringing food on the train; he usually relied on his companions to take care of him or simply went hungry. The girl who had swapped seats with him earlier might have found him easygoing or perhaps was flattered when he called her "beautiful girl," which made her like him. She offered her food to him, saying, "Here, have some."
He waved his hand and politely declined.
Qinglan laughed again, pulling out a few more packages of food from her bag and tossing them over the back of her seat onto him.
He wasn't startled by the sudden flying food. However, several people around him stared in surprise for a moment before finally looking at him with knowing smiles.
"Looks like a girl has taken a liking to you and is feeding you," they teased. They had already figured out that Qinglan and he were acquaintances or perhaps even a couple having a little spat! No wonder she wanted to switch seats!
The girl next to Qinglan also caught on and smiled at her, saying, "Good thing I didn't get too carried away with the handsome guy; otherwise, it would have been embarrassing."
Qinglan smirked and replied, "You wouldn't be embarrassed; he doesn't like me. You can go after him."
"Really?" The girl teased Qinglan.
A group of boys behind them overheard the girls' conversation and started joking with An Shaojie, saying, "Hey, if you're not going to eat that delicious food, I'm going to take it!"
They noticed that An Shaojie hadn't touched any of the bags of food Qinglan had thrown at him.
"Why bother with that food? Just switch seats and sit over there; there’s a beautiful girl in front of you, yet no one wants to sit with her." One bold guy even dared to approach further.
He actually got up and came over to Qinglan's side, asking if any of the girls there would be willing to go sit with the handsome guy.
Immediately, two girls stood up from across the aisle, willing to join them.
In the end, the boys and girls on both sides switched places halfway.
Strangers sat together while familiar faces were separated.
Later, both sides took out playing cards and started playing Tractor, making a lot of noise and having a great time. Qinglan and An Shaojie seemed to be secretly competing with each other; both of them, who usually didn't enjoy being overly excited, became wildly enthusiastic, almost causing the large group to erupt in chaos.
As the night grew late and quiet, everyone began to feel drowsy. The noisy young people could no longer withstand their fatigue and gradually settled down, leaning this way and that as they fell asleep.
The autumn chill was still biting. Sitting by the window, Qinglan felt a cold breeze continuously seeping in from outside. She hugged her arms tightly but inadvertently brushed against a jacket that slipped off her arm.
Drowsy, Qinglan suddenly felt as if she had awakened from a dream; the sensation was too familiar.
"Brother Shaojie," she mumbled.
"What?" A strange face intruded into her hazy vision.
"Who are you?" Qinglan asked warily as she lifted the jacket off her arm.
The boy chuckled and said, "Wow, you don't recognize anyone after just waking up? We were just playing cards together."
"Oh." Qinglan then remembered. "Whose jacket is this?" It was clear that this jacket did not belong to An Shaojie.
"His," the boy pointed to another guy and said, "Seeing you shivering, he took out his jacket from his bag and draped it over you."
The other boy was still asleep and had not woken up. Qinglan looked at the jacket on her shoulders and then at the other girls who also had jackets draped over them. Although those were their own jackets, it proved that it was indeed a bit chilly in the carriage. If she insisted on returning the jacket to a boy who was still asleep, it would seem somewhat insincere and pretentious.
Moreover, during the card game earlier, everyone had become familiar with each other. He had simply noticed she was cold and casually offered her his jacket. Since she wasn't sitting next to him and everyone else was relaxed about it, if she acted overly sensitive here, wouldn't that seem too petty?
Thus, Qinglan decided not to return the jacket and continued to lean her head back and sleep soundly.
Unexpectedly, the conversation between Qinglan and that boy fell entirely into An Shaojie's ears.
The corners of his mouth curled up into his usual cold smile. He also noticed that the girl beside him was huddled up in the cold, and another boy was offering her his jacket, but she politely declined.
He couldn't understand why Qinglan always seemed to attract trouble wherever she went. Of course, in An Shaojie's eyes, attracting trouble meant that boys were being enthusiastic towards her, and she never rejected any boy's enthusiasm.
Upon arriving in Beijing, An Shaojie didn't even greet Qinglan before grabbing his things and getting off the car.
Once again, those boys helped Qinglan carry her things.
Yes, Qinglan wanted to refuse, but with such a heavy bag, she really couldn't manage it.
After exiting the station, she searched for him everywhere but couldn't find him.
In desperation, that boy had no choice but to escort Qinglan to the subway station.
However, after Qinglan got on the subway alone, she realized that in her haste to find An Shaojie when getting off the train, she had forgotten to return the jacket to that boy.
Sigh! Qinglan knew that taking a stranger's jacket back with her would be something she could never explain to An Shaojie. Even though all the events occurred right under his nose without any ambiguity, how could he not see through a grain of sand?
But since someone kindly offered her a jacket to keep warm, she couldn't just discard it because of his narrow-mindedness! That would be too disrespectful! When she returned to the rented apartment, An Shaojie had already gone to class. After packing her things, Qinglan suddenly had an idea and decided to keep that boy's jacket. When Xu Wen saw Qinglan come back, he took advantage of An Shaojie's absence to give her some class notes from the time she missed at school so that she could copy them as soon as possible.
