When Hao Chuanze brought Shen Xiaomeng in front of his classmates, she immediately felt their strange gazes. A few girls even started to mock her as he turned his back to take her to the restroom, saying, "What kind of girlfriend has Hao Chuanze brought back? How could his taste and standards have dropped so low?"
"Ah, there were so many beautiful girls chasing him at our school before, and he didn't even look at them. How could he choose such an ugly girl now?"
A few other girls covered their mouths and giggled, "Her hairstyle is really ugly, and she's studying in Beijing? So tacky."
Several male classmates were also laughing at him.
Later, sitting among his classmates, she spoke very little. She could tell that he was feeling upset as well.
He always thought he wouldn't care about these things. He considered himself someone above the mundane; many beautiful girls had pursued him in the past, but he never accepted any of them because he wanted to find a girl who could make his heart race in an instant, regardless of whether she was beautiful or not.
However, when he heard his classmates' discussions and saw them proudly with their own beautiful girlfriends in front of him, he realized how fragile he truly was and that he couldn't bear the scornful gazes of society.
Although he still believed that he wouldn't care.
Later, they began to dance.
He took her into the dance floor, thinking this would help avoid her awkwardness, prevent her from looking at others, and stop her from hearing their comments.
Moreover, he knew that her dancing was beautiful.
But as soon as they entered the dance floor, holding her hand and wrapping his arms around her waist while standing still, he realized just how short she was in front of him—like one of the dwarfs from Snow White.
She wasn't a princess after all! In front of him, she was just a little dwarf from the forest.
On the dance floor, everyone else was dancing face to face and shoulder to shoulder, but her face barely reached his chin. He couldn't wrap his arms around her waist; instead, he could only support her back awkwardly. It looked very out of place, especially not like a couple dancing closely together.
It felt more like a ridiculous stage play.
Everyone else stopped dancing and watched the two of them. They didn't pay attention to her dance moves; they only focused on the mismatched and discordant aspects between them.
Someone even pointed directly at them, saying, "You two are very mismatched in height and build."
In their eyes, it wasn't just a matter of height and build that didn't match; every aspect between him and her was incompatible.
She suddenly shook off his hand and ran away.
After finishing her story, Shen Xiaomeng had tears streaming down her face.
Qinglan said, "That's just their opinion, how others feel. Many times, the reality is that a pair who seem completely mismatched to outsiders can be the happiest couple. Meanwhile, those who appear to be a perfect match may not last. Why should you care about what others think? As long as Hao Chuanze is loyal to you, that's all that matters."
"But..." Shen Xiaomeng sighed sadly, "Seeing him upset makes me feel upset too. Shouldn't love bring happiness to both people in love? But now he isn't happy, and I'm not happy either."
"How do you know he's not happy? That's just your own feeling," Qinglan replied.
After returning to school, Shen Xiaomeng kept insisting on breaking up with Hao Chuanze, but he never agreed.
This was the reason why Shen Xiaomeng had been unhappy since the beginning of the school year.
In the blink of an eye, the final exams were over, and winter vacation had arrived.
During those exam days, after their argument, Qinglan saw An Shaojie again for a few days.
She had always wanted to take the opportunity to talk to him during those few chances, hoping to reconcile with him. However, she hesitated because it was exam season and she was afraid of disturbing him. Since his freshman year, he had almost received a scholarship every semester, so he took the end-of-semester exams very seriously, not allowing any distractions.
It wasn't until she finished her last exam and walked out of the classroom that Qinglan saw him ahead. Just as she was about to approach him, another girl grabbed her and asked about the upcoming semester. After Qinglan finished answering, she turned back to look for him, but he was nowhere to be found.
Qinglan immediately took out her phone to call him, but the number you dialed is not in service.
Qinglan was momentarily stunned.
When did he change his phone number?
She had never thought to dial his number; she always believed that his number would forever remain in her phone as long as she didn't delete it.
But at that moment, as Qinglan looked at the familiar Arabic numerals on her phone, she realized that many familiar things could become strange or even disappear in an instant. Even if you held them tightly in your hand, what you were holding might no longer be what you once knew.
Qinglan stood dazed by the roadside.
“Qinglan.” A voice called out, startling her.
Xu Wen was standing behind her, though she didn't know when he had arrived.
Qinglan smiled at him, a few strands of hair blowing across her cheeks and lips in the cold wind; her smile looked somewhat desolate.
“Aren't you going home tomorrow?” Xu Wen asked.
“I don't know,” Qinglan replied with a hint of sadness in her voice. “I haven't bought my ticket yet.”
Because of Simple College, she will graduate next year, and their courses for this semester have already finished. Next semester, they will be doing internships, so she went home early. Qinglan didn't book tickets with her like before. Moreover, the last time An Shaojie was unwilling to go home with them left Simple feeling uneasy, and now Simple rarely calls her.
The main reason is that Qinglan has not been in contact with An Shaojie, so she hasn't booked any tickets.
"Where is An Shaojie?" This question had been on Xu Wen's mind for a long time because An Shaojie had almost disappeared from the class.
Qinglan shook her head, "I haven't seen him for a long time."
"Let's go eat at the cafeteria!" Xu Wen suggested.
Qinglan nodded and walked beside Xu Wen in silence as they headed to the cafeteria.
"I'll accompany you to buy train tickets in the afternoon," Xu Wen said.
"Okay," Qinglan replied with a nod.
Then, Qinglan took out her phone and called Lin Xi to ask if she had bought her ticket yet.
Lin Xi hadn't bought her ticket either, but she needed to finish her exam tomorrow morning.
"Then let's buy tickets for the day after tomorrow. I'll wait for you to go home together, okay?" Qinglan said.
Qinglan also wanted to delay for another day to wait for news from An Shaojie. "Alright," Lin Xi replied, "but I have another exam in the afternoon, so I can't go with you to buy tickets."
"That's fine," Qinglan said, "I'll buy them for you."
