"Well, let's go eat." Xu Wen's mood was immediately lifted by Qinglan, and a smile appeared on his face, blending perfectly with the warm and gentle sunlight that fell upon him.
"Okay." Qinglan laughed cheerfully, and the air around seemed to dance along with her laughter, feeling even warmer and more inviting than before.
In the cafeteria, after Xu Wen had prepared meals for both of them, Qinglan had just taken her seat when Xu Wen remained standing, his tall figure casting a shadow over her.
Qinglan looked up and asked, "What's wrong?"
She noticed his gaze searching the distance.
"What's going on?" Qinglan asked again.
Xu Wen lowered his head to look at her, raising an eyebrow with a broad smile. "How about we have some drinks today?"
"Beer?" Qinglan blinked.
"Yeah. How about one bottle each?" Xu Wen said before quickly adding, "Oh no, you can choose as many bottles as you like."
Qinglan smiled shyly. "Okay."
After a while, Xu Wen returned holding two bottles but was followed by someone who stood in front of Qinglan with a cheerful smile.
"Lin Xi?" Qinglan was somewhat surprised.
Lin Xi smiled and sat down. After placing the bottles down, Xu Wen went to get a meal for Lin Xi and then returned with two more bottles of beer.
Qinglan looked at Lin Xi and smiled; Lin Xi also smiled back at her and asked mysteriously, "Are you two getting along better?"
Qinglan lowered her gaze, a hint of sadness in her eyes as she shook her head. She had already poured a glass of the two bottles of beer that Xu Wen had opened for all three of them.
Lin Xi picked up her glass and took a sip. "An Shaojie is not what we expected."
She no longer referred to An Shaojie as Brother Shaojie.
"Oh, how come you're eating at this cafeteria? Where's Su Hailu?" Qinglan suddenly remembered to ask.
The school has several cafeterias, and Lin Xi's Business School is quite far from this one, so they usually do not come here to eat.
Just as Lin Xi was about to respond, Xu Wen had already walked over, placed two bottles of wine on the table, and after a brief exchange of pleasantries, picked up his glass and raised it towards Qinglan and Lin Xi, saying, "I'll drink the first cup; you two can do as you please."
With Lin Xi's presence, Qinglan, who had initially planned to drink freely with Xu Wen, reined in her earlier boldness. She held her glass and spoke softly with Lin Xi, sipping lightly, and paid no attention to Xu Wen.
Xu Wen then began to pour and drink for himself, occasionally exchanging a few words with them.
Out of four bottles of wine, Xu Wen consumed more than two by himself, while Qinglan and Lin Xi sipped lightly but still managed to drink quite a bit. Both of their faces had a slight flush. In contrast, Xu Wen remained fair and handsome, sitting calmly in front of Qinglan, still composed and elegant with an air of scholarly refinement.
Qinglan asked him, "Are you okay?" though she herself was feeling a bit tipsy.
Xu Wen waved his hand dismissively. "I'm fine," but he noticed that the food in front of him had not been touched.
Qinglan and Lin Xi were not heavy drinkers either; they drank while eating, and their plates were nearly empty.
After finishing their meal, Xu Wen waved his hand again at Qinglan and Lin Xi. "You two can leave if you have something to do."
The moment he saw Lin Xi, he knew that today's plans were going to fall through. He had originally intended to relax and enjoy a few drinks with Qinglan and take the opportunity to talk more openly. More importantly, despite having feelings for her for quite some time—something they both understood—he had never truly confessed his feelings. He wanted to take this chance to express what was on his mind. However, encountering Lin Xi unexpectedly disrupted his impromptu plans; clearly today he could say nothing to her. It would be better for them to leave first so he could sit alone in peace for a while.
The cafeteria was noisy, but inside him was a calm silence.
As for the wine! He hadn't drunk in a long time; today he hadn't really gotten into it at all. He wanted to slowly enjoy a few more cups by himself.
Qinglan and Lin Xi both understood that with them around, he wouldn't be able to fully enjoy his drinking or feel comfortable eating. Although Lin Xi knew he wanted to drink freely with Qinglan today, even without Qinglan's presence, there was something uniquely enjoyable about Xu Wen drinking alone rather than having them watch him eat and drink.
Most importantly, since he could let loose today, why not allow him to be someone other than Xu Wen for once?
Lin Xi and Qinglan did not return to their dormitory; after having some drinks, they both felt slightly tipsy and lay down on a patch of grass in a quiet corner of the campus.
The sunlight was warm on their bodies, and the breeze was gentle. Lin Xi looked around at her surroundings; it was a secluded corner of the campus with hardly anyone around—very peaceful.
"How did you know there was such a quiet place here?" Lin Xi propped her chin on her hands as she lay on the grass. The sunlight fell on her fair face, making her skin appear even more delicate like jade. She smiled, but there was an underlying sense of loneliness and melancholy that was hard to notice in her eyes.
Lin Xi is a girl who can control her emotions well, always calm and composed, rarely showing any emotional fluctuations, loneliness, or melancholy on her face.
Qinglan did not answer her question; in fact, this question did not need an answer. No matter how remote a place is, there will always be someone who has been there. Moreover, in such a small campus, which corner has not been discovered by the campus couples who have nowhere to escape?
This place was discovered by An Shaojie. She and he had shared bittersweet moments here. Now An Shaojie seemed to vanish from her sight. This place, like their rented apartment, no longer showed his presence. Yet Qinglan often came here, sitting or lying down, gazing at the sky in a daze.
Whether Lin Xi would answer that question was not important at all because perhaps Lin Xi already knew that this was a place she and An Shaojie often visited. Maybe she didn’t know, but she didn’t care about the answer to that question.
So Qinglan did not respond; instead, she asked, “Is there something on your mind? Is it not good with Lu Chenyu?”
“Not good at all,” Lin Xi replied as she shifted her position from leaning forward to lying back, squinting at the sun.
Qinglan also looked at the sun; the scattered sunlight around it pierced her eyes, causing her to squint as well.
Both of them squinted their eyes, and the smiles on their faces disappeared.
“What’s wrong?” Qinglan asked. “Didn’t you two get along well during the winter break?”
“Ah,” Lin Xi sighed lightly, adjusting her body and patting the grass beside her to signal Qinglan to lie down too. “I’m starting to understand him less and less.”
“Has he changed his heart?” Qinglan asked. “That shouldn’t be the case; he treats me well, but it feels like he’s always distant, and I can’t grasp his heart.” Lin Xi pondered thoughtfully. Qinglan sighed helplessly: “Women’s hearts are like needles in the sea; I’ve found that men’s hearts are even harder to understand than women’s.”
