At this moment, Qinglan still believed that An Shaojie's disappearance was only temporary.
Having grown accustomed to his indifferent presence in front of her, Qinglan would never have thought that, despite his dislike for her, he had been around her for over twenty years without leaving. One day, he could vanish completely, leaving her with no trace of him at all.

Next, Lin Xi shared with Qinglan what had happened between her and Lu Chenyu during the winter break after Qinglan had left their home.
That time, after Qinglan left, Lin Xi had walked Lu Chenyu home the night before and made plans to hang out together the next day.
Because it had snowed the day before and the weather was still gloomy on the day they were supposed to meet, when Lin Xi arrived at their meeting place, Lu Chenyu's face lacked the joy of reunion; his expression was as dull and gloomy as the weather that day.
However, he still took great care of her. Upon seeing Lin Xi, he removed his gloves and offered them to her.
Lin Xi found it both amusing and childish.
"Don't I already have gloves on?" she said with a sweet smile on her face.
She knew why he did this; he must remember what he had told her when they got off the train yesterday. Because his gloves were warm, he promised that he would always warm them up first before giving them to her.
Lin Xi smiled gently as she stood in front of him, allowing him to slip his gloves onto her hands.
The atmosphere had started off well; everything felt wonderful.
"Where are we going to play?" Lin Xi asked eagerly.
He paused for a moment and then looked around.
It turned out he hadn't thought about where to go at all. After not seeing each other for an entire semester, he hadn't even planned a winter break itinerary for just the two of them.
Lin Xi felt a bit displeased, but she only pouted playfully in front of her boyfriend.
"You didn't even think it through," Lin Xi said, playfully scolding him.
After all, he was the one who asked her out yesterday, so some teasing was inevitable.
His expression darkened for a moment, and with some regret, he said, "It's because I can't stay out too long; I have to go back soon."
Lin Xi's heart sank even further.
Before heading out today, she had made a special effort to dress up. She missed him so much and hoped to catch his eye and bring him joy. Although she didn't know why, she could sense that after starting college, he seemed to have lost the happiness he had during high school. It felt like he was hiding something inside that made him subtly unhappy and melancholic, and this underlying sadness brought her feelings of insecurity and uncertainty.
She had tidied herself up before leaving, hoping he would notice her efforts and feel happy, so they could spend a peaceful time together in their own little world. Even if it meant just holding hands and chatting while taking a walk somewhere, that would be enough for her.
What she longed for was simply to be with him.
But he hadn't considered any of this and mentioned that he had to go back soon.
Was this really the winter break she had been looking forward to for so long?
Despite feeling somewhat displeased, she still managed to smile and said, "Then let's find a place to hang out for a bit. When you go home, I'll go with you to visit your family. It's about time we see your grandparents after coming back from winter break."
Originally a good plan, Lin Xi decided they should hike at a famous mountain nearby to exercise and escape the bustling crowds.
Most importantly, Lin Xi wanted more time alone with him, free from external noise. She also preferred quiet environments.
However, Lu Chenyu suggested that sitting in the park would be sufficient.
His tone was very casual, which Lin Xi interpreted as dismissive.
"What do you mean just sitting for a bit?" Lin Xi felt even more displeased.
"How can a couple who hasn't seen each other for half a year have such an attitude?" Lin Xi asked as she looked at Qinglan.
"True," Qinglan nodded and then asked, "What if he has fallen for someone else?"
Qinglan had asked Lin Xi this question before, but at that time, Lin Xi had dismissed it. However, if this question was not considered, then Lu Chenyu's behavior was indeed very unusual, unless he was an abnormal man.
"If he has fallen for someone else, he could just tell me. Many couples break up and get back together; as long as we communicate clearly, it's fine," Lin Xi said.
"That's true," Qinglan said, feeling a bit confused. Looking at Lin Xi's pained expression, she felt a sense of shared sorrow. "Ah, you and I were really good partners in childhood; different people yet sharing the same fate. Why do the people we encounter always turn out like this? Like Brother Shaojie, who disappeared without a word. If he didn't love me anymore, he could have just said so openly. What started as a casual chat turned into something more emotional for Qinglan. As she spoke, she suddenly felt a surge of resentment and sadness. With the help of alcohol, her eyes turned red, and soon she began to sob quietly.
Lin Xi's mood wasn't much better either. Influenced by Qinglan's emotions, she too felt a wave of sorrow wash over her. Rarely experiencing such emotional fluctuations, she couldn't help but shed tears for love.
The two girls lay on the lawn under the sun. In what should have been a bright spring day filled with youthful exuberance, their hearts were instead heavy and gloomy.
Later on, Lin Xi hesitantly recounted the unpleasant events that had occurred between her and Lu Chenyu during the winter break to Qinglan.
At that time, Lu Chenyu had suggested they just sit in the park, which Lin Xi found unsatisfactory. After some negotiation, they agreed to go watch a movie instead.
Watching a movie is one of the best ways for couples to express their feelings. In the dim light and ambiguous atmosphere, surrounded by flickering images on screen while leaning against each other, it seemed like a good idea. So Lin Xi readily agreed and felt her spirits lift again. For couples in love, their desires are often quite simple: a space that belongs to just the two of them, a world of their own, a romantic environment, warm embraces, loving gazes, and charming smiles can make one feel like they possess the entire world.
