After returning to school, Qinglan went to the rented house again, but An Shaojie had not come back yet. It was still the holiday, and Qinglan thought he might have gone to the library or somewhere to study.
So, Qinglan decided to study as well. Although she didn't know where An Shaojie would be studying this time—he no longer had a regular routine of studying in those specific places—Qinglan firmly believed that since he had come back last night, he would definitely return later. Not studying together with him didn't bother her anymore; as long as he was around, she felt content. Thus, she studied diligently all day with high efficiency.
When she returned to the rental house in the evening, it was still dark, and An Shaojie had not returned. Qinglan stayed there until ten o'clock before leaving for her dormitory.
During the following Labor Day Holiday, Qinglan checked the rental house every morning and evening to see if An Shaojie was there. Unfortunately, he was never around.
Her initially cheerful and confident heart gradually sank into disappointment and unease over time, feeling more anxious and fearful than ever before.
Moreover, as graduation approached, Qinglan sensed that every good friend and acquaintance around her seemed to be in a state of tension typical of nearing graduation. Their attitudes toward people and things became indifferent and apathetic.
Once May passed, another Graduation Season began.
In various campuses across Beijing, there were suddenly many on-site recruitment fairs and presentations from various companies.
The talent recruitment markets throughout Beijing City also became busier than ever, bustling with activity. Posters and flyers advertising job openings were plastered everywhere on streets and sidewalks. The soon-to-be graduates turned the vast Beijing City into a noisy hotpot, boiling with excitement—intense yet vibrant and enticing. Even as the tea leaves slowly transformed from green to dark green to black through the brewing process, one could still almost smell the fragrant aroma of tea that emerged from their thirst.
Simple was facing the Graduation Season directly. However, there was no anxiety or confusion in her eyes like that of other graduates.
She had always been a child who went with the flow. Simple's mind was as uncomplicated as her name; she didn't want to think about distant dreams or complex ideals that were hard to express.
She continued to shine brightly with her rosy complexion, radiating joy.
She was preparing for some graduation matters and handling her graduation procedures at school, while also casually wandering through various talent markets in Beijing with the flow of people.
During her job search, she was quite laid-back, without any specific goals. She didn't insist on working for one of the top companies in the world, nor did she demand a monthly salary in the thousands. She didn't even limit her job location; for her, just finding a job was enough to make her happy, and she set her expectations very low.
She said, "I know my own worth. Just graduated and don’t know anything; how can I ask for a salary in the thousands?"
This was what she told the recruiters at the job fair.
When a recruiter asked about her salary expectations, she pointed to the lowest figure in the salary range listed in the job advertisement: "If you’re not looking for high qualifications in candidates, then I’ll go with this number."
The recruiter replied, "Other candidates are asking for the highest figure; why are you asking for the lowest?"
She responded with her earlier statement, appearing quite calm. This led to other candidates standing with her in front of the recruiter scolding her for being pretentious and foolish.
Later, this incident spread, and whenever someone faced rejection during their job search, they would think of her and curse her for lowering the overall salary expectations in the talent market.
She defended herself: "I just don’t have the ability to deserve that much money. I worry that if I go to a company, my salary won’t match my skills. Others may have strong abilities and can demand higher salaries—even more than what the company offers as the highest salary. If they have enough capability, companies will definitely be willing to pay them. What company doesn’t crave talent? Why should I affect their employment opportunities?"
Qinglan: "Even if you think that way, you shouldn’t say it in front of the recruiters."
Simple: "But now I've already done that; what should I do?"
She stared wide-eyed at Qinglan, as if she had really done something very wrong, feeling a bit panicked.
Qinglan pinched her cheek and laughed, "What else can you do? You won."
Simple raised her face, appearing carefree, and also laughed, "Well, I have several contracts waiting for me to sign."
Due to Simple's low demands, several companies from out of town were interested in her and agreed on the spot to offer her employment contracts for her consideration. However, she hesitated and specifically called Qinglan. After spending three years in Beijing, she had grown fond of the city and wanted to stay.
"Although the conditions and benefits offered by those out-of-town companies are tempting, I still want to stay in Beijing." In Simple's eyes, all the conditions and benefits offered by companies were enticing.
She was such an easily satisfied person.
Even though she was about to start working, she still dressed like a student, exuding a pure aura. On the phone, she did not hide her naive thoughts, pouting like a child who had not grown up.
"Then don't sign the contract. Isn't it still not time for your official graduation? If you want to stay in Beijing, just look for something else here," Qinglan comforted her.
"By the way, have you discussed your job prospects with Chen Yang?" Qinglan asked tentatively.
Sitting on her bed with a pout, her phone wedged between her ear and shoulder, she was trimming her toenails with both hands. "What does my job prospect have to do with him?"
"Truly stubborn!" Qinglan chuckled inwardly. "Who doesn't know you have feelings for Chen Yang? Just a few days ago, someone was complaining in my ear about that deadbeat Chen Yang, saying he graduated and found a job but didn't even contact me or care where I wanted to go. If we don't end up together later, he can't blame me for ignoring him."
Simple huffed in response. As graduation approached, aside from Graduate busily searching for jobs and worrying about the future, the campus began to fill with an atmosphere of sadness and heavy restlessness over parting. All around campus and outside, groups of people gathered together singing, eating, drinking, shouting, or howling as if they could not express their deep reluctance about graduation and their regrets and memories of youth without this noise and commotion. There was also anxiety about an uncertain future mixed with youthful recklessness.
