Qinglan pouted, rolling her eyes in dissatisfaction as she looked at Xu Wen. "Hmph, can't I take a taxi?"
"Take a taxi?" Xu Wen's smile deepened as he teasingly replied, "Do you have money for that?"
"I... How could I not have money for that? Am I that poor? So poor that I can't even afford a taxi?" Qinglan protested defiantly.
"Don't be so stubborn," he continued to smile. "Let's see if you really have any money first."
Oh, Qinglan suddenly remembered and started patting herself down. Looking at her outfit, she noticed the plain white floral dress had no pockets. Her hands were empty, and her shoulders felt light, clearly indicating she wasn't carrying a bag.
Oh right, she recalled that she had left her bag on the neatly made bed before leaving. Her wallet was inside the bag, and since she had to carry many things and didn't want to keep bending over, she took off the bag and placed it on the bed, planning to grab it after getting everything ready. In the end, she completely forgot to take it with her.
"How did you know I didn't bring my wallet?" Qinglan asked, sounding a bit unreasonable and sulky.
"I just calculated it," he replied with a hint of playfulness.
This was not the usual demeanor of Xu Wen. He seemed like a different person compared to the previously serious and refined Xu Wen. This sudden change made Qinglan find it amusing yet endearing. The current Xu Wen was more relatable, casual, and down-to-earth. Yet this approachable version of Xu Wen made Qinglan feel a sudden pang in her heart, almost bringing her to tears.
Many of life's so-called coincidences are often the result of someone's thoughtful care. All those seemingly random encounters and gestures from him—whether big or small—were all part of his deliberate attention towards her.
Thinking back, she realized she had also orchestrated countless chance meetings with An Shaojie, but she had never felt that he was intentionally encountering her.
With a sigh in her heart, various bittersweet feelings surged within her, making her feel somewhat melancholic. However, looking at Xu Wen, who was spirited and pleased to have run into her today, she couldn't help but chuckle softly, sweeping away the earlier gloom and unhappiness. "Then I suppose you also know where I'm renting my apartment from your calculations?" Qinglan asked with a smile.
"Of course, at that time," Xu Wen nodded and smiled in response.
After Xu Wen's lighthearted remark, the slightly awkward atmosphere between them became harmonious.
After a while, Xu Wen asked again, "Does An Shaojie have a wealthy relative?"
"Huh? No, I don't think so!" Qinglan replied.
"Oh." Xu Wen lightly acknowledged and then fell silent.
After waiting for a moment, Qinglan asked, "Why did you suddenly ask that?"
"Curiosity," he answered.
"Curiosity about what?" Qinglan inquired.
Xu Wen did not respond. After a pause, he shifted to another topic and asked, "When are you going for your internship?"
"Oh, in a few days. I've already arranged it with the organization," Qinglan said.
"What about you? When do you start your internship?" Qinglan then asked.
She remembered that he seemed to be doing an independent internship; finding an internship on his own shouldn't be difficult for him. This was Qinglan's first subtle attempt to inquire about Xu Wen's plans. There were many rumors in class about his future—some said he was preparing to go abroad, others claimed he had secured a recommendation for graduate school, which was said to have been decided long ago. There were also claims that he rejected the recommendation and wanted to take exams himself because he intended to change his major. Some even said he didn't want anything at all and just wanted to start working as soon as possible.
"I..." He paused for a moment, a strange or perhaps cunning smile appearing on his face, and said, "I'll go with you. Whenever you go, I'll go."
Qinglan was so surprised that she almost jumped out of her seat. "You're not joking, are you?"
Xu Wen rarely joked in the past.
Internships were a serious matter; the school had always placed great importance on them. The credits for this course were quite high. Generally speaking, unless there were special circumstances, students had to strictly follow the internship allocation schedule and go to the designated units for internships, which must last for three months. During the internship period, both the college and the school would send relevant teachers to check. If any student left their post without reason or transferred to another unit without permission, they would have points deducted or be required to retake the internship.
Xu Wen was doing an independent internship, and Qinglan remembered clearly that only four students from the entire school were assigned to her internship unit, all from other departments; she was the only one from her department.
Xu Wen remained calm and said steadily, "Do I look like I'm joking?"
It turned out that the independent internship unit he found was the same one assigned to Qinglan. She felt both incredulous and unimpressed; for someone like Xu Wen with his background, finding an independent internship unit was likely easy. However, Qinglan couldn't understand why he insisted on choosing the same unit as hers!
Before they had moved in together with An Shaojie, it was easier to think that Xu Wen still had a chance with Qinglan. But ever since Qinglan started living with An Shaojie, she had actively distanced herself from him. She realized that their relationship had indeed become much more distant than before. Although he still treated her well and had told her they were still friends, it was puzzling that he would go through such lengths just to be with her during an internship if they were merely friends. Qinglan also feared attracting gossip; given Xu Wen's family background and personal qualities, she felt unworthy of him. Before getting involved with An Shaojie, she hesitated and resisted accepting Xu Wen because she worried about not being a good girlfriend. Now it was even more complicated; even if Xu Wen didn't mind her, she couldn't help but feel disdain for herself.
So, in front of him, Qinglan—who had never shown her stubbornness and willfulness from childhood—suddenly stood up. Although she hit her head on the car roof and sat back down again, her anger did not diminish at all. She almost shouted in frustration, "Xu Wen, can you please stop messing around? I'm really tired of this situation."
The driver glanced back upon hearing her shout. They had arrived at the neighborhood, but neither of them called for the car to stop. So he asked, "Is this the place? We've arrived."
"Yes," Qinglan replied sullenly. The driver stopped the car, and Qinglan had already gathered all her bags in her hands, ready to get out. However, Xu Wen remained sitting in the car, staring blankly at her. Her sudden outburst was baffling enough; it was also the first time Xu Wen had seen Qinglan lose her temper—he never knew she could get angry.
