After assigning the internship positions, the unit sent someone to arrange their accommodations.
Since Qinglan and Xu Wen are in the same major, they were assigned similar positions in the same office. All the interns were housed in one dormitory building, making it easy to go up and down.
The first few days were fine; the unit did not assign them many tasks. They mainly visited various departments to understand the nature of the unit, its organizational structure, and personnel distribution, which was quite relaxed. Since Qinglan's major is physics, the unit is actually a research institute with a simple structure and not many staff members.
After a few days, both she and Xu Wen began to receive some assignments. Xu Wen, with his strong foundational knowledge and practical skills, was assigned to work with a young Research Assistant on experiments right from the start. Meanwhile, Qinglan was tasked with some clerical work in the laboratory, organizing data.
Clerical work seemed easy at first glance but was actually tedious and voluminous. They had accumulated a lot of unorganized data before arriving, and since Qinglan is someone who strives for perfection in everything she does and is very focused, she found herself working non-stop throughout the day. By the end of each day, she felt fatigued. Most of the documents were in English, so even a simple task like sorting files required her to skim through a lot of material, which involved reading extensive professional terminology in English that demanded her full attention. By the time she finished work, she often felt dizzy.
On several occasions when she returned to the dormitory after work, Qinglan looked exhausted; her face was pale, and she walked with weak legs. On their way home from work one day, Xu Wen asked her, "Are you very tired?" In the office, he noticed that she hardly took any breaks throughout the day. "You look really weak; what's going on? Do you need to see a doctor?"
Previously, Qinglan had always been considered healthy among girls; although not as robust as Hu Jiao'er, she generally gave off a healthy vibe with rosy cheeks. However, her complexion had been off for several days.
"No need; I'm just a bit tired," Qinglan replied.
Xu Wen suspected that her poor mood due to An Shaojie's situation might be affecting her sleep and overall mental state. He brought up seeing a doctor several times again. Eventually, Qinglan reluctantly agreed to go with him for a check-up. She only told the doctor that she had a cold; no pulse was taken nor any other examinations conducted. The doctor prescribed some medication before she returned home. She didn't take the medicine either but seemed to improve slightly afterward, so Xu Wen stopped worrying about it.
One particularly hot Friday, after a busy morning at work and heading back in the afternoon, Qinglan felt overheated despite the short distance traveled. Upon entering an air-conditioned room that day—set unusually low by someone—it felt almost like winter inside. Shortly after starting work, when Qinglan bent down to pick up a piece of paper from the floor and stood up again, she suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed.
When Xu Wen took Qinglan to the hospital and received her examination report, he was almost stunned. Accompanying them were another intern from their school and a Research Assistant from the institute. Seeing Xu Wen's expression change worried them; they thought something serious might be wrong with Qinglan and reached for his report. "What's wrong? Is it serious?"
Xu Wen quickly shoved the report into his pocket and said, "It's nothing; just malnutrition. I didn't realize she wasn't taking care of herself. She hasn't had much of an appetite these past few days and hasn't been eating anything at all."
As they reached the entrance of the Diagnosis Room, Xu Wen stopped both of them and pulled out his wallet, saying to the other Intern, "It's too hot. Go buy a few bottles of water." He then turned to the Research Assistant and said, "There are too many people inside, so you don't need to go in. I'll just ask about the situation myself. You can sit and rest for a bit; you've been a hassle today."
When Xu Wen came out of the Diagnosis Room and walked into the ward, Qinglan was lying on the hospital bed receiving an IV drip. She looked weak and slightly opened her eyes, trying to sit up to say something. Xu Wen pressed her back down gently and said, "It's nothing. Just rest well."
At that moment, the Intern and Research Assistant entered, greeting Qinglan and asking Xu Wen about her condition.
"Low blood sugar caused by malnutrition. The doctor said she just needs to rest for two days and strengthen her nutrition," Xu Wen replied. He then instructed the Intern and Research Assistant to head back first.
Seeing that Qinglan was not in serious condition and that the office was busy, they exchanged a few words with Xu Wen before leaving.
The ward was left with just him and her.
Xu Wen pulled over a chair and sat by the bed, gazing at Qinglan, who was resting with her eyes closed. He couldn't help but sigh deeply while gripping the test report in his pocket.
After sitting for a while, he watched as the fluid in the IV bag slowly decreased. Qinglan opened her eyes and weakly asked, "Is this a hospital?"
"Yes," Xu Wen nodded and stood up to adjust her blanket.
"What happened to me?" Qinglan tried to lift her head.
Xu Wen propped up a pillow behind her back so she could slowly straighten herself up.
"Nothing serious. Just malnutrition." His hand remained tightly gripping the paper in his pocket, unsure of how to start explaining things to her.
Since it was only delivered to the hospital in the afternoon, several bottles of IV drip were needed for injection. Although the doctor said there was nothing serious, the IV had to be completed, so Qinglan would need to stay in the hospital until the next day for discharge. Staying overnight was necessary. When it was time for dinner, Xu Wen said, "I'll go out to buy some food. What do you want to eat?"
Qinglan replied, "Anything is fine. I'm really hungry right now."
After Xu Wen went out, he took out his phone. Although he still wasn't sure if he could reach An Shaojie at that old number, he decided to dial it anyway. The number did not exist.
As he walked towards a restaurant, Xu Wen kept scrolling through the numbers on his phone. He called every number he had that belonged to someone who knew An Shaojie, asking each one for his current contact information, but not a single person knew. Even a few of his former dorm mates had no idea; they all said he had moved out long ago and hardly kept in touch with them.
"Unbelievable! What kind of dorm mates are you guys? Do you all not care about each other at all?" Xu Wen lamented. "Aren't you in the same dorm as him? You two are even rivals; you should care about each other more." Someone joked sarcastically with him. At that moment, he wasn't in the mood to joke around. After hanging up the phone, he stood on the street in confusion for a while, unable to think of any other way, and finally put away his phone to buy dinner.
