"So, our main problem isn't writing the graduation thesis after school starts, but rather the last month of the internship. You need to find a way to solve this, see if you can use your connections to ask the internship unit for leave, or directly get her internship evaluation form, or request a leave from school to postpone the internship. By the time the next semester starts, Qinglan will probably have given birth. Once the baby is born, it will be easier; at most, she can find an excuse to take a month off and come back to school later for her graduation project. Many students do this, and the school won't suspect anything. The only thing is that she will need to find a nanny to take care of the baby."
Xu Wen listened quietly to Lin Xi's analysis, while also planning in his mind. He thought to himself how fortunate it was that he met with her; indeed, girls tend to be more detail-oriented. He couldn't think of so many things because he didn't understand and was just anxious inside.
After hearing Lin Xi's lengthy explanation, Xu Wen felt much more assured than before. Thanks to Lin Xi's insights, things seemed clearer and less troublesome. After peeling back the layers, it turned out it was just a matter of finding some connections and requesting leave. The urgent matter that still needed addressing was that since Qinglan couldn't go home to give birth, he needed to help her find a place to live after the baby was born. Although she and An Shaojie had originally rented a place, the conditions were poor and not suitable for living.
After parting ways with Lin Xi, Xu Wen began implementing the plan they had just discussed.
First, he called Assistant Li to gauge his thoughts on whether it would be possible to obtain an internship evaluation form since there was still a month left in the internship. Or if they could make up for the missing time later. If not, could he take a leave?
Assistant Li immediately recalled what Xu Wen had said before and asked with general sympathy and curiosity, "What's going on? Is there some situation? Does she really have some illness?"
Xu Wen thought for a moment and finally stammered out vaguely, "Uh, it's hard to say; the situation is a bit complicated. She probably won't be able to participate in the last month of the internship." There was an element of truth in his words but also intentional ambiguity.
"Is it due to health reasons?" Assistant Li confirmed again.
"Yes," Xu Wen answered briefly. He knew that at this moment, it was best to say less; too many words could lead to mistakes, and he needed to maintain an air of mystery.
"Just go get a doctor's note from the hospital," Assistant Li said in a businesslike manner.
"What if I don't want to go to the hospital for a note?" Xu Wen replied.
"Why not?" Assistant Li asked.
"I don't want her to know."
"About her condition?" Assistant Li pressed on. Human curiosity is endless; as long as it remains unsatisfied, it will always seek to pry and inquire indirectly.
"Yes." Since he had already decided to be vague, Xu Wen thought that pregnancy was a physical issue. Pregnant women often have some discomfort, right? They need to rest, after all. Saying it this way isn't really a lie.
There was silence on the other end of the phone for a moment. "How about I talk to the boss first, test the waters, and you can check with your mom?" Assistant Li knew that Xu Wen's mother was familiar with their supervisor, so he was willing to help Xu Wen out. When Xu Wen arrived at the office, he would show concern for him, which is why he offered this assistance.
"Okay," Xu Wen said. "You check first and let me know what you find out. If it can be resolved here without involving my mom, I’d prefer not to trouble her."
"Got it." Assistant Li seemed to understand the implication behind his words. After a pause, he suddenly asked, "She's your girlfriend, right?"
Xu Wen was taken aback for a moment, his mind racing to figure out how to respond to that question.
He cared for her so much, running around for her and even coming here for an internship specifically for her. Everyone in the office probably knew about it. If he denied it, it would seem insincere and pretentious, especially since he needed Assistant Li's help at this moment; if he wasn't honest with him, he would surely feel displeased.
Saying yes would be true in a sense, but she wasn't exactly his girlfriend. The main issue was that if Qinglan or others found out he referred to her as such, would Qinglan disagree? Would others find it distasteful and laugh at him for being shameless?
Another problem was that if he said no, how would he care for her afterward? Just as classmates? Is there anyone who would take such thoughtful care of someone else's girlfriend and child? Even if he was good friends with her boyfriend. Furthermore, if someone asked about her boyfriend—who is this child? How would he answer?
Saying yes felt inappropriate as well.
Assistant Li's question left Xu Wen in a dilemma. After thinking for a long time, he finally replied ambiguously, "Sort of... but not really."
Assistant Li's understanding ability is indeed strong. He immediately realized, "You like her? She doesn't like you?" and chuckled mysteriously on the phone.
"That can be understood that way," Xu Wen replied.
He laughed even more mysteriously, "This girl is so impressive, I can't believe she looks down on Young Master Xu." Xu Wen could almost imagine his chubby face filled with smiles.
"Hey!" Xu Wen sighed helplessly, both for Assistant Li to see and genuinely lamenting his own situation.
"Alright then," Assistant Li said with a determined tone, "In light of Young Master Xu, I'll use my silver tongue and sweet words to talk to my boss about this matter. How does that sound?" Assistant Li flattered.
Xu Wen clasped his hands in gratitude and promised to treat him to dinner when he returned to the office.
After hanging up with Assistant Li, Xu Wen stood by the roadside in a daze for a while. The joy he had feigned during the phone call with Assistant Li vanished completely. He was thinking about how to move forward—not just for Qinglan, but for himself as well.
A few days later, Assistant Li called and said, "Now it's your turn to step up. I've already briefed the boss on the general situation; it shouldn't be a big problem. If you say you're not feeling well, you can take a break first, recover your health, and then we can discuss it. Health is important; you can make up for the month of internship later."
Xu Wen was secretly thrilled; after all, he had resolved a major issue.
Just as Xu Wen was about to say thank you, Assistant Li's voice came through the phone again, interrupting his thoughts. "However, you still need to go to the hospital to get a certificate, as the boss said."
"Didn't I tell you? I just don't want to go to the hospital for that certificate. The simpler the process, the better. If she finds out about one step, it won't be good." The earlier joy quickly turned into anxiety. "It can't be that serious, right? Could it be cancer? It doesn't seem like it; if it were cancer, there wouldn't be any chance of making up for the internship later—I might as well just go home..."
Assistant Li spoke with confusion and analysis. "Go away, go away, you jinx," Xu Wen quickly interrupted Assistant Li.
