Qinglan thought she must be extremely bored. On her way back to the office, there was no one to talk to, so it was just right to speak with her. However, she indeed had a lot to share with Qinglan. After working for a while, she had seen and experienced much more, leading to many thoughts. From amusing office anecdotes, the subtle rivalries among colleagues, playful interactions with friends, to her ups and downs with Chen Yang, their arguments and sweet moments, and then her various little schemes—like a certain colleague showing interest in her, asking if she had a boyfriend, and another colleague who kept asking her out despite her rejections. What should she do now? Where had she gone for dinner? Which friend did she go for coffee with? Recently, she had bought several pieces of clothing and skirts in different colors. She knew which street had delicious snacks and which restaurant served a particular dish that was truly tasty. She promised to treat Qinglan next time she visited.
She kept chattering away, rambling on and on until she returned to the office.
After hanging up the phone, she sighed and realized that Lin Xi had already left. She picked up her phone to call Lin Xi and asked why she had left.
"It's getting late; I need to pack my things. I'm leaving school tomorrow; my internship is starting," Lin Xi replied.
"You still haven't called Lu Chenyu. Remember to do it; reach out to him proactively. Last time you mentioned breaking up; you must have hurt him," Qinglan patiently advised.
"Alright," Lin Xi nodded in agreement. She had intended to contact Lu Chenyu, having refrained from doing so all summer long while secretly missing him. So, she reluctantly agreed to Qinglan's suggestion.
"Call him now." She was always decisive and disliked procrastination, so she urged Lin Xi firmly. "Hang up my call and then call him. Report back to me afterward; I'll check in later."
"Okay." Although she agreed somewhat reluctantly, deep down, she had already made up her mind—she would definitely call! Lin Xi thought about why she shouldn't call. She wanted to ask Lu Chenyu what he really wanted. If he truly decided on a breakup, he should give her a clear answer. If they weren't breaking up, why hadn't he contacted her during such a long summer? She felt a fire of frustration inside!
At that moment, even without Qinglan urging her, she decided to give Lu Chenyu a call and ask him: "What do you really want?"
Lin Xi hadn't returned to her dorm yet; she had just entered the school gate. Students passed by in small groups as the sun hid behind the clouds and was about to set behind the mountains. The sunset cast golden rays across the land through the leaves, shining brilliantly.
She picked up her phone and pressed on Lu Chenyu's number but suddenly felt an inexplicable panic and unease. Her finger hovered over the number—up and down it went.
It had only been one summer apart, yet suddenly the name displayed on her phone screen felt less familiar than before; that number seemed strange now.
She took a deep breath, straightened her back, and mustered the courage to press the button. When did she ever need to gather so much courage just to call him?
"Sorry, the number you dialed is not in service." The mechanical female voice echoed in Lin Xi's ear, leaving her bewildered.
Did she dial the wrong number? She held her phone up and stared at the screen for several minutes, confirming without a doubt that the name displayed was "Lu Chenyu."
Listening closely, the mechanical voice had already faded away. It didn't matter; she would call again.
This time, Lin Xi felt no fear or panic; with utmost determination, she pressed Lu Chenyu's number.
Yes, when people realize they are about to lose something, they often remain calm and composed instead of panicking.
Thus, we often see those who appear hesitant and indecisive, while those with nothing to lose tend to charge forward fearlessly.
The cold, mechanical voice continued to ring in her phone. "Sorry, the number you dialed is not in service."
If she had felt a bit flustered and confused before, now that the icy voice reminded Lin Xi again, she found it amusing. She couldn't help but curl her lips into a smirk and chuckle lightly.
Lu Chenyu was quite something; he had learned how to play the disappearing act.
When An Shaojie went missing and she heard Qinglan talk about it, Lin Xi thought Qinglan hadn't tried hard enough. How could a couple who spent every day together allow one of them to go missing? Now that it was happening to her, Lin Xi found it unbelievable and surreal.
Moreover, Lu Chenyu's personality was completely different from An Shaojie's. Lu Chenyu was someone who would feel anxious if no one spoke to him for a few days; yet here he was playing hide-and-seek. Was he really just disappearing in front of her?

Lin Xi looked at the sunset-dyed horizon and chuckled lightly before picking up her phone to call Chen Yang.
"Hello, beautiful Lin, what made you suddenly think of me today and call?" Chen Yang's voice was still casual, laced with a teasing tone.
"Bah!" Lin Xi spat at Chen Yang through the phone.
Chen Yang deliberately held his phone away from his ear. "Can you be a little more feminine? I really don't know where the gentle and quiet Lin Xi went. Ever since you got together with that Lu Chenyu guy, you've become so rough. You just sprayed saliva all over me." He pretended to wipe his face as if Lin Xi's saliva had really hit him.
"Look at our Simple; ever since he got with me, he's become so gentle. I really don't know how your Lu Chenyu trained you..." Chen Yang continued his playful banter.
"Stop talking nonsense," Lin Xi shouted, interrupting Chen Yang's endless chatter.
"What? Tell me what's going on. If you need help, I'm ready to go through fire and water for you," Chen Yang promised, patting his chest.
Lin Xi found it amusing. "No one needs you to go through fire and water. I want to ask you if Lu Chenyu's phone number has changed."
"What?" Chen Yang's shrill voice came through the phone. "Lu Chenyu's phone number changed? How come I didn't know? Wait, how come you don't know?" After saying this, he seemed to sense something was off and quickly switched to a softer tone. "What's going on? Is his phone unreachable?"
"Yeah." Whether it was because of Chen Yang's sudden change in tone that made Lin Xi feel her own grievances or because she felt an unprecedented warmth and comfort from hearing Chen Yang's familiar voice, Lin Xi's nose suddenly tinged with sadness, and she felt like crying. Her voice became hoarse as she said, "I just called him, and his phone has been disconnected."
