Xiang Yuanqiu raised her head and glared angrily at the two people standing in front of her, seemingly oblivious to her presence. She hated it when others stood in front of her while she was sitting, as it gave her an invisible sense of pressure, especially when they were tall. Being petite, their towering presence made her feel even smaller. The two individuals before her were a tall girl and a large boy, clearly appearing in a way that made her uncomfortable.
She stared intently at them; both the girl and the boy had their faces turned slightly away, making it difficult for her to see their features clearly.
However, they seemed familiar, so her angry glare shifted to one of curiosity and confusion. Intentionally, she stretched her foot forward, but the girl's foot accidentally tripped over hers as she jumped. The girl turned back with a bright smile, "Oh, sorry about that..." Her mouth formed an 'O' shape as she pointed at Xiang Yuanqiu with a surprised expression. "You're... you're Lanlan's classmate, Xiang."
Xiang Yuanqiu calmly and elegantly stood up, immediately revealing a graceful smile on her face. "Yes, I am Xiang Yuanqiu."
Simple nearly jumped in disbelief, exclaiming, "I know you’re Xiang Yuanqiu! But how... how are you here?"
At that moment, Chen Yang also stepped forward to greet Xiang Yuanqiu.
"Why can't I be here?" Xiang Yuanqiu replied with a blink. Meeting an old friend in a foreign place, especially before embarking on a lonely journey, made her genuinely happy and cheerful.
"When did you arrive?" Simple asked curiously.
"During the National Day holiday," Xiang Yuanqiu answered matter-of-factly while glancing at Chen Yang.
"Hmm?" Simple tilted his head, seeming doubtful. "Did you come alone?"
"Yes. Is there something wrong with that?" Xiang Yuanqiu playfully asked, then teased with a mocking tone, "Not everyone can be like you and have company." Her smile remained bright.
"How did you end up in Beijing? Where are you staying these days?" In truth, Simple wanted to ask why he hadn’t known about her coming to Beijing. Wasn’t she there to see Qinglan? Or was it for An Shaojie?
During this time in Beijing, Simple has been feeling that something is off. Qinglan said she was too busy to meet her, and although Simple didn't push her, she found it strange that even when Chen Yang left, Qinglan didn't offer to see him off. This behavior was very unlike Qinglan's usual style. Fine, she thought, maybe Qinglan really was busy, too busy to spare even a moment to meet them. Later, Qinglan told her that she had been sent on a business trip and was not in Beijing.
But what about An Shaojie? Where was An Shaojie?
When Simple asked Qinglan why An Shaojie's phone number was unreachable, she said he had changed his number but didn't offer to share the new one, as if she were afraid they might disturb him. Well, even if An Shaojie's internship was not in Beijing, having a new number wouldn't help; they couldn't meet or hang out with him anyway, so Simple let it go. But surely she wouldn't forget to mention him altogether?
Yes, upon seeing Xiang Yuanqiu, Simple's mind finally started to piece things together. During this time, Qinglan had hardly mentioned An Shaojie in front of her. Whenever work or life details came up, it was always Xu Wen who was mentioned.
Had Qinglan broken up with An Shaojie? Was Qinglan now with Xu Wen?
If it were just that, Simple wouldn't still be filled with doubts. Breaking up with An Shaojie was one thing; getting together with Xu Wen was another. There was nothing to hide; Xu Wen was great, and Simple had a good impression of him as well. Moreover, even though An Shaojie's sister An Shaomin got along well with her brother Jian Ming, An Shaojie was still An Shaojie, and An Shaomin was still An Shaomin. She was herself, and her brother was her brother; choosing between An Shaojie and Xu Wen had nothing to do with that.
However, even if Simple's mind was simple, she could still sense that something wasn't right.
Could it be that Xiang Yuanqiu came looking for An Shaojie? It definitely wasn't for Qinglan since she hadn't heard Qinglan mention her at all during her long stay in Beijing. If Qinglan knew about it, there’s no way she wouldn’t have mentioned it at least once.
"Of course I came to see Qinglan! I wanted to see you too, but I didn't have your contact information. Besides, you have Chen Yang; I wouldn't want to be a third wheel," Xiang Yuanqiu joked.
"Yeah. I also wanted to check out the job market here in Beijing," Xiang Yuanqiu continued.
Simple's smile almost froze on her face as she glanced at Chen Yang standing beside her, seemingly asking, "What's going on?"
"Hey?" Xiang Yuanqiu suddenly seemed to remember something and pointed at Simple. "You guys haven't been in touch with Qinglan, have you? Chen Yang came and didn't let Qinglan know? Afraid she'd be a third wheel and disturb your little world?" Xiang Yuanqiu teased with a laugh. "Good thing I didn't contact you; otherwise you'd probably push me away!"
Hearing what Xiang Yuanqiu said, Simple felt not just confused but somewhat angry. She thought to herself, "Well, you Qinglan, you tricked us into thinking you had no time, not even showing your face, but you have time to be with Xiang Yuanqiu every day. It seems the bond between classmates is stronger; Chen Yang and I are just on the outside. Although I didn't particularly invite her to hang out with us, she should at least show some courtesy as a host and an older sister. It's our choice whether to go to her place or not, but she should at least extend the invitation. Sigh! If Lin Xi were in Beijing, it probably wouldn't be like this. After all, she is a classmate of both Chen Yang and me; she would never act like Lanlan. Lanlan, Lanlan, how sweetly I call her usually, but it turns out it's all fake."
With this thought, Simple couldn't help but feel a bit dejected and resentful.
Noticing Simple's sudden change in expression, Xiang Yuanqiu stopped talking and looked at her and Chen Yang with confusion, pretending not to notice anything amiss while still smiling.
"Yes, we haven't contacted Lanlan." It was better to lie about not contacting her than to let Xiang Yuanqiu know they had reached out to Qinglan and that Qinglan hadn't met them. Although the girl usually acted carefree, she still cared about her friendship with her close friends. Any discomfort could be set aside for now; she would confront Qinglan about it later. She couldn't believe that in Qinglan's heart, Xiang Yuanqiu was more important than her and Chen Yang. Xiang Yuanqiu was such a clever person; she and Qinglan were simply not on the same wavelength! "You guys are lucky you didn't contact her; she's been out of Beijing. When I contacted her before coming here, she said she would come pick me up, but then her internship sent her out of town on a last-minute assignment. What a letdown! I've been feeling so lonely these past few days," Xiang Yuanqiu pouted in grievance.
