Shen Xiaomeng had already snatched the key from Hu Jiao'er’s hand and was about to throw it down when Hu Jiao'er called out, "Wait a minute." Saying this, she turned and went inside, "Wrap it in some paper; otherwise, the key might break if it just falls."
Shen Xiaomeng's hand paused in mid-air, waiting for Hu Jiao'er.
Once Hu Jiao'er took out a piece of scrap paper, crumpled it up, and placed the key inside, Shen Xiaomeng finally tossed the key to Jiang Liuying.
Time flowed by like water as everyone idled away their days. By the end of December, the only elective course had concluded, leaving everyone completely unoccupied. Those preparing for graduate school began their interviews one after another, while many others started working on their graduation design projects under the guidance of their advisors.
Xu Wen was busy preparing for interviews while also working on his graduation design proposal and continued to help with research projects at the lab. His graduation design was based on his internship results.
Jiang Liuying was also preparing for interviews and getting ready for her graduation design.
Hu Jiao'er and Shen Xiaomeng began to feel busy and serious as well; they no longer played around in their dormitory but often borrowed Jiang Liuying's computer or went to an internet café to submit resumes online.
One evening after dinner, Jiang Liuying suddenly stormed back in from outside, plopped down on her bed with an angry expression, sulking in silence.
"What’s wrong?" Hu Jiao'er asked while browsing the internet on her computer.
Jiang Liuying remained silent until Hu Jiao'er asked several times and then set down her mouse to sit beside her. Only then did she angrily say, "Mosen isn't going to take the graduate entrance exam anymore; he has given up."
"Why?" Hu Jiao'er asked with wide eyes. "Wasn't he studying well? The exam is just around the corner; he made it this far."
"Yeah," Jiang Liuying sighed. "I don’t know what he’s thinking."
"Did you ask him?" Hu Jiao'er inquired.
"I did. He said he wants to work."
"He can work too; it's not too late to find a job after the exam. Both can be done; the exam is coming up soon," Hu Jiao'er said.
Jiang Liuying remained silent for a while before slowly saying, "He doesn't need to look for a job; he has already found one."
"Found one?" Hu Jiao'er was surprised. "That's great! Your Mosen quietly managed to secure a job while reviewing for the graduate entrance exam. Shouldn't you be happy about this? Why are you still upset?" Hu Jiao'er looked at Jiang Liuying in confusion.
"But he doesn't want to take the exam. I advised him all afternoon, but he firmly refused, saying that since he found a job, why bother with the exam?"
"That's true. If he has a job, what's the point of taking the exam? Weren't you worried about him finding a job when you wanted him to take the exam?" Hu Jiao'er was even more puzzled.
"Still, after studying for so long and having already paid for the registration, it wouldn't hurt to try. If he gets accepted but doesn't want to go, that's fine. If he doesn't get accepted, that's okay too. I just don't understand why he won't even give it a shot."
"If he's decided to work, what difference does it make whether he takes the exam or not?" Hu Jiao'er couldn't grasp Jiang Liuying's reasoning.
Jiang Liuying felt that she couldn't explain it to her, so she chose not to say anything further. Later, Hu Jiao'er asked about Mosen's job location and nature.
Jiang Liuying replied, "The job is in Qingdao, at the same place where Mosen interned—a large foreign-funded enterprise. During his internship, he helped the company with an advertising copy design, and they recognized his talent. They had already expressed interest in hiring him and sent him an employment agreement to sign. He didn't sign it right away because he was afraid to tell me. Later, when the company urged him to sign, saying that if he didn't, they would hire someone else, Mosen worried about missing out on the opportunity and signed it. It aligns well with his major in art."
Hu Jiao'er said, "You're lucky! After graduating from graduate school, who knows what the job market will be like? He might not find such a good job then."
Later, Hu Jiao'er comforted and envied Jiang Liuying and Mosen, saying, "One is pursuing a master's degree while the other is working and earning money; isn't that even better?" In the end, Hu Jiao'er insisted that Jiang Liuying and Mosen treat her to celebrate.
Jiang Liuying felt her anger dissipate from Hu Jiao'er's words and smiled brightly. She joked with Hu Jiao'er, "That little guy Mosen thinks he's serious about studying for the exam while I cook for him every day; little did I know he had other plans in mind."
"That shows he's quite capable. Look at us; so many of us can't find jobs while he effortlessly secured one at a foreign-funded enterprise. Foreign-funded enterprises value ability above all else; he must be quite skilled." At last, Hu Jiao'er sighed and said, "Look at me and Zhou Xiaochuan; neither of us has managed to secure a job yet. We're both anxious."
Later on, Mosen noticed that Jiang Liuying no longer pressured him to continue with the graduate entrance exam. He felt much lighter and began planning their future together when they were together.
"I earn 4,800 yuan a month. From now on, I'll send you 500 yuan for living expenses each month. I'll keep 800 for my own socializing and living costs and save the rest for our future marriage or to buy things for my parents." Mosen squinted his eyes in laughter as if envisioning their beautiful life ahead.
"I don't want it," Jiang Liuying said. "You keep it for yourself. Take care of yourself, eat well, and dress well."
Mosen said, "We will settle in Qingdao in the future. We should buy a house."
Jiang Liuying replied, "The sea breeze in Qingdao will ruin the furniture."
After a while, Mosen left Beijing to work in Qingdao, completing his graduation project at the company.
The night before Mosen left Beijing, Jiang Liuying invited Hu Jiao'er, Zhou Xiaochuan, and Xu Wen for a meal. She initially wanted to invite Shen Xiaomeng along with Hao Chuanze, saying that even if you and Hao Chuanze can't be together anymore, you are still good friends. You used to hang out often, and he has treated us to meals before. However, Shen Xiaomeng insisted against it. By then, the news of Hao Chuanze going abroad had spread throughout the Physics Department; everyone knew that the relationship between Shen Xiaomeng and Hao Chuanze had come to an end.
On the day Mosen left Beijing, Jiang Liuying saw him off at the train station and said to him, "Mosen, after graduation, you should move your household registration back to your province. Don't move it to Qingdao."
"Why?" Mosen didn't understand.
"Because the college entrance examination score line in your province is lower. It will be easier for our future children to get into Tsinghua and Peking University," Jiang Liuying explained.
Mosen held Jiang Liuying as they stood by the platform, the wind blowing through her hair. "Hehe," Mosen laughed and asked, "Where will our child be?" To this day, neither she nor Mosen had crossed the final boundary between men and women, so Mosen teased her.
"What are you in such a hurry about? You have no foresight at all..." Jiang Liuying poked Mosen's forehead with her finger while tidying her messy hair.
At the moment Mosen jumped onto the train, Jiang Liuying suddenly burst into tears. After the train started moving, she ran alongside it for a long distance, shouting to Mosen, "Idiot! The reason I want you to pursue graduate studies is that I don't want you to leave Beijing. I don't know how to live without you. But you just don't understand. How am I supposed to spend three years of graduate life alone..."
