Su Hailu walked slowly in front of An Shaojie, who seemed still unaware of her presence. Even as she deliberately slowed her pace to the point where his toes nearly touched her heels, he merely treated it as if he had stumbled over a blade of grass or a stone, showing no interest in her at all. She left him far behind, yet he continued at his own leisurely pace, not catching up to her.
Eventually, Su Hailu grew frustrated and stood in the middle of the road, facing him like a roadblock, watching him intently in the darkness as if waiting to swallow him whole.
As he approached her, she extended her leg to trip him. He stumbled a few steps and fell onto her.
She covered her mouth and chuckled lightly, the anger and slight discomfort from being ignored dissipating instantly.
He stared at her, finally noticing her. "What are you doing?" he asked.
She couldn't be bothered to answer. A bookworm like him would always ask that question. She felt it was pointless to respond; it would be better not to answer at all. Even if she did respond, he wouldn't care because what he needed wasn't an answer; he would just keep asking that same question.
"Go back," Su Hailu said before turning away and striding back.
Finally hearing her words, he followed behind her as they walked back.
Once home, he headed straight for his room. Su Hailu followed him until they reached the door of his room, where she stopped.
He walked to his desk and sat down with his back to her.
"An Shaojie, let's break up," she said from behind. "I'm moving out tomorrow."
His back stiffened for a moment before he turned around, his deep black eyes lingering on her face for several minutes.
Su Hailu's heart raced suddenly, followed by a wave of trembling.
This was probably the first time he had looked at her for such a long time.
She thought she had prepared herself for this outcome and would feel relaxed and calm. However, under his gaze, she felt exposed and effortlessly revealed her weakness and the care and love she had hidden deep within.
Just a moment ago, she was smiling and talking, but now her smile froze on her face. She reined in her smile, and it seemed that tears were about to flow from her eyes.
She bit down hard on her lower lip, telling herself to hold back the tears. Words spoken are like water spilled; once they are out, they cannot be taken back, and there should be no regrets.
She turned her face away, not looking at him, but her peripheral vision told her that he was still staring at her.
The air around them flowed silently, just like the blood flowing silently within her body, slowing down, solidifying, coming to a halt. The silent atmosphere began to feel somewhat suffocating and oppressive.
She couldn't take it anymore and wanted to turn and escape to her own room, to her own world where the air was fresh and she could breathe freely.
She didn't want to suffocate, didn't want the feeling of being stifled and nearly unable to breathe.
"Have you made up your mind?" he suddenly asked from behind.
She nodded vigorously, tears already streaming down her face without his notice.
"Good," he said lightly in his usual cold tone.
She wanted to rush into her room, but she couldn't. She couldn't let him sense her embarrassment, couldn't let him discover that her heart was aching and tears were flowing. She couldn't let him see her panic, completely defeated by his coldness.
He didn't even offer a word of retention, not even a false one.
She straightened her back and paused.
She thought he would at least have something else to say, but when she glanced toward his room, she saw that he had already turned away and was reading a book.
I forced a smile, and the tears that were about to burst forth finally receded.
Could he see her tears? He was really overthinking.
Finally, she managed to stop crying. Strangely enough, once the tears were gone, her heart suddenly felt less constricted, the air around her became smoother, and the blood in her heart began to flow joyfully.
She let out a breath and walked into her room.
The air in her own room was indeed much fresher. Su Hailu took a deep breath and closed the door.
However, when she gently leaned against the door with her back, that feeling of weakness surged back, shattering the strength she had just pretended to have.
It turned out that as long as she had something to lean on, the fatigue and exhaustion within her urged her to close her eyes, to close her eyes, to collapse, to collapse.
She leaned lightly against the door, closed her eyes gently, and tears began to flow uncontrollably again.
But she still reminded herself not to regret, not to regret. If there would be pain in the future, it was better to suffer now. Falling in love with him was ultimately a pain that would come sooner or later, so there was no need for regret.
The next day, Su Hailu moved away.
She left before An Shaojie, who usually woke up early, had gotten out of bed.
An Shaojie stood blankly at her room's door for a while. No one could tell what kind of expression he had, and no one knew how he felt at that moment.
Not just then; throughout nearly thirty years of his life, who had ever understood him? To whom had he ever revealed his thoughts? Who knew his feelings at any moment?
He had always been this cold and distant.
This was what Xu Wen learned about An Shaojie from their mutual acquaintances.
After returning from Beijing, Xu Wen took the initiative to suggest moving into the company dormitory.
An Shaojie loved Qinglan, and aside from this reason that led Su Hailu to leave him, Xu Wen couldn't think of any other reason.
Now that he was back in the country, Xu Wen could only assume that the sole reason and explanation for his return was that he came back for her.
Since he returned for her, she had no choice but to leave him.
Now An Shaojie not only returned to the country but also went back to Liu Family Village.
As for him, he had been contemplating that it was time for him to return to Beijing.
Thinking of this made him a bit reluctant. The car slowed down more and more until it finally stopped at a fork in the road on a downhill slope near the factory area.
He got out of the car and stood by the shore, gazing into the distance.
On both sides were rolling mountains, with a winding road extending outward in between.
Years ago, she and An Shaojie probably walked out of the mountains along this road, Xu Wen thought silently; after all, he had walked into the mountains along this very road.
Nearby was a vast expanse of flat land, where there were factory buildings with white walls and blue roofs, bright and eye-catching like azure seas beneath white clouds. This factory area was the most remarkable piece of land in these mountains. Perhaps the ancestors who once lived here never imagined that one day a girl would appear and transform this land into something magical by building a factory here. The establishment of the factory not only enriched the local economy but also primarily allowed them to establish close connections with the outside world, enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of what lay beyond. Many people entered from outside, and many others left from here to step into or re-enter a more exciting world outside.
