Suddenly, Lin Xi stood up from her chair and said to Qingmei, "Beautiful, you play for a while. I have something urgent to take care of."
Without waiting for Qingmei to respond, she rushed out of the hospital room, not even taking her bag. Soon, her hurried footsteps faded away in the long corridor of the hospital.
Qingmei was taken aback for a moment, quickly put down the food she was holding, jumped off the bed, and ran to the window to see Lin Xi rushing out through the hospital entrance.
Lin Xi kept running towards the lawn and then stood in the middle of it, looking around.
There were only a few scattered people left on the lawn, and none of them were the figure she wanted to see.
After standing there for a while, she turned back with disappointment.
Standing by the window, Qingmei finally breathed a sigh of relief. Seeing Lin Xi walking back, she quickly ran back to her bed, took out what she had secretly stuffed under her pillow earlier, and pulled out a large plastic bag filled with many small toys and coloring books from under the bed.
She smiled mischievously and put the items into the plastic bag before shoving it back under the bed.
When Lin Xi returned to the hospital room, Qingmei was already lying obediently on the bed, staring wide-eyed at the ceiling as if she were impatiently waiting for her.
Lin Xi smiled apologetically at her and asked, "What's wrong?"
Qingmei blinked and asked, "Where did you go just now?"
"I just went downstairs for a bit," Lin Xi replied with her head down, feeling somewhat guilty.
"Were you going to see your boyfriend?" Little Ones suddenly asked with a strange smile as she looked at her.
"What?" Lin Xi seemed taken aback. She walked over and patted Qingmei on the head, saying, "What are you thinking about every day? Where did you hear that?"
"Isn't that what they say on TV?" Qingmei pointed at the television in the room and said, "Besides, on TV, when girls or boys run out to look for someone, it's usually to see their boyfriend or girlfriend." She had a little adult demeanor.
"You can't do this. You watch TV every day, and it's always shows like this. I'll tell your Mama that your condition has improved a bit; shouldn't we send you to school now?"
Qingmei pouted and said, "It's surprising that you're only thinking about this now. According to my Mama's plan, I will be going to school with her this September."
She tilted her head proudly and smiled at Lin Xi, her two braids playfully sticking up.
"Ah, did your Mama agree to that?" Lin Xi exclaimed, wide-eyed in surprise at Qingmei.
"Yes," Qingmei nodded smugly.
"What did I agree to?" Just as they finished speaking, Qinglan appeared behind Lin Xi and asked.
Lin Xi turned around, rolled her eyes, and scolded her, "Where have you been? You left Qingmei here all alone for so long!"
"Aren't you here?" Qinglan replied with a nonchalant attitude.
"I'm here, but you didn't know I was coming before you left!" Lin Xi retorted defiantly.
"I didn't say anything about you; you brought it up," Qinglan laughed. "When did you come to Beijing? You didn't even tell me in advance. And just arriving in Beijing without stopping by the company first? That's a neglectful attitude towards work."
"What's wrong? How do you know I just got to Beijing? How do you know I didn't go to the company?" Lin Xi stood up, feeling indignant.
"Xu Wen just called me and asked if you had come to the hospital. He said you arrived last night and thought you'd definitely go to the company today. He's still waiting for you there, ready to discuss work management and allocation issues," Qinglan said as she set down what she was holding.
"Is he that eager to assign me work? Can't I have a break? He only cares about others and never thinks about me," Lin Xi teased as she followed Qinglan around in circles.
"How do you know that's not out of concern? Maybe he just wants to see you," Qinglan joked while picking up things from Qingmei's bed and bedside table.
Over the past two years, due to Qingmei's illness, their plans to get married had been postponed repeatedly. Then they got busy with transferring Qingmei to another hospital and collaborating with companies in Beijing, which dragged on until now.
Now, Qinglan was busy preparing for school while the company in Beijing was just getting started, relying solely on Xu Wen's support. He was so busy that he hardly had time to sleep. It seemed both of them had forgotten about getting married; neither mentioned it.
Especially Qinglan; since Xu Wen didn't bring it up, she wouldn't either, not even allowing herself to think about it.
Originally, when she promised to marry him, she felt it was a moment of confusion, perhaps because An Shaojie suddenly returned, and she impulsively wanted to end the past without thinking it through before agreeing to Xu Wen.
Moreover, she always believed she was not worthy of Xu Wen, who should have a better woman by his side.
Now, with Lin Xi arriving and being a more suitable person for him, Qinglan's mind resurfaced with her previous thought that it would be best for Lin Xi and Xu Wen to be together.
Thus, Qinglan began to tease the two of them again, both intentionally and unintentionally.
However, while she joked on the outside, there was a hint of bitterness in her heart.
In the past two years, Lin Xi and Xu Wen had collaborated seamlessly at work, complementing each other perfectly. They truly seemed well-matched and coordinated; one was talented while the other was beautiful, and most importantly, neither of them was married.
The people from Liu Family Village, although they did not directly associate Xu Wen with Lin Xi, had always maintained a watchful attitude towards their relationship. Originally believing that Qinglan and Xu Wen might end up together, they began to doubt their previous judgment with Lin Xi's arrival.
As for the company in Beijing, they had no doubts at all; they directly regarded Lin Xi as Xu Wen's girlfriend. Every time Lin Xi came to the Beijing office for work, the staff would look at her with scrutinizing eyes, often discussing the ambiguous relationship between Xu Wen and Lin Xi.
“Lanlan.” Lin Xi suddenly became serious.
“What’s wrong?” Qinglan asked, somewhat puzzled. She looked up at her but quickly shifted her gaze elsewhere as if realizing what Lin Xi was about to say.
Since Lin Xi started working at Qinglan's company, whether in Liu Family Village or in Beijing, they often teased each other about Xu Wen, half in jest and half seriously, urging one another not to miss out on him. Now that Lin Xi's expression had turned so serious all of a sudden, Qinglan thought it might be because of Qingmei's presence. She glanced at Qingmei lying on the bed and quietly said to Lin Xi: “It's fine; Beautiful seems to have already fallen asleep.” Indeed, Little Ones appeared tired from playing; her eyes were slightly closed, long eyelashes fluttering gently. Her little face peeked out from under a thin blanket, pouting her lips and puffing her cheeks while frowning as if feeling wronged or dissatisfied.
