"Does she know you are her Dad?" The coffee in front of Xu Wen was still steaming, and he stared at the vapor, his vision becoming a blur.
"I didn't tell her," An Shaojie hesitated for a moment. He could only be sure of his own actions, but he couldn't ascertain the thoughts of the girl.
"Maybe she knows, maybe she doesn't. That little girl is too clever," An Shaojie couldn't help but smile as he continued.
"Then she should know," Xu Wen said with a self-deprecating smile. "That's why you can't leave."
An Shaojie looked at him.
"She is using her illness to keep you here," Xu Wen continued, almost as if he were talking to himself. His mind had already drifted far away into distant memories.
"After a Bone Marrow Transplant, patients go through a psychological reaction process. If the patient rejects the donor, even matched marrow can lead to rejection. Conversely, if the patient psychologically accepts the donor, it helps with the acceptance of foreign matter entering their body. This process takes at least three years," Xu Wen said slowly.
"And what about you?" An Shaojie asked.
"Me?" Xu Wen looked up towards the horizon. "There will always be a place for me to go, right? Besides, as long as she is happy, it doesn't matter where we are, does it? Didn't you think that way when you donated your marrow?"
When Xu Wen and An Shaojie came out of the café and stood at the airport exit, Xu Wen shielded his forehead with his hand and gazed at the sky. It was a rare good day in Beijing; although it was a bit hot, the sky was clear and blue, with not a cloud in sight, just as a flock of birds flew by.
October.
The red leaves of Fragrant Hills in Beijing were ablaze.
In the lawn of the hospital where Qingmei was hospitalized, a handsome man sat in a wheelchair being pushed slowly by a woman with long flowing hair, while another woman with large wavy hair walked alongside them.
"October is the most beautiful season in Beijing," Su Hailu said as they walked slowly.
"Yes, the leaves at Fragrant Hills must be red by now. Back when I was studying, I used to go see them every year. Although they looked similar each time, my mood was always different," Lin Xi said as a gentle breeze brushed past her hair, prompting her to tuck it behind her ear.
Lin Xi squatted down and said to Lu Chenyu sitting in the wheelchair, "It seems we haven't gone to Fragrant Hills together to see the leaves! We always seem to miss it."
"I've been once," Lu Chenyu replied affirmatively.
"Really?" Lin Xi tilted her head playfully and thought for a moment before smiling, "Your memory is always better than mine."
"Lin Xi." Su Hailu walked in front of Lin Xi and helped her smooth out her clothes that had been ruffled by the wind. "I might have to leave the day after tomorrow."
"The day after tomorrow?" Lin Xi stood up. "Why are you leaving so soon?"
"It doesn't matter whether I leave late or early," Su Hailu said.
"Are you going alone?" Lin Xi asked.
Su Hailu smiled, "Haven't I always been alone?"
"That's not what I meant," Lin Xi replied.
Su Hailu patted Lin Xi's shoulder and said, "I know, it's okay. I've gotten used to it."
"Thank you, Su." Lin Xi's eyes became misty.
"What are you thanking me for?" Su Hailu laughed. "After leaving An Shaojie, all these years abroad, even though I took care of him, it was actually he who accompanied me. It was after meeting him that I slowly began to forget An Shaojie and moved on from the pain of heartbreak. It was because of him that I understood what true love really is."
Su Hailu cried, "And then there’s you all. After returning home and meeting you again— you, Qinglan, and Xu Wen— my childhood friends— you all taught me how to love someone and how to find my own happiness in love."
"Lin Xi, you're actually very lucky. In all his memories abroad, besides his parents and grandparents, he has only ever mentioned you to me. You both are happy."
Su Hailu walked in front of Lu Chenyu, squatted down, leaned on his legs, and looked up at him with a smile. "Lu Chenyu, will you miss me? When reminiscing, will you also mention me to Lin Xi?"
Lu Chenyu reached out and gently stroked her head. "Of course. In a foreign land, we relied on each other, each caring for and missing the ones we loved. We were once in sync with each other; we regarded each other as confidants. I am very grateful that during my darkest days abroad while receiving treatment, I met you. When I saw you coming from Lin Xi's side, it felt like seeing her again; it gave me endless strength and courage to live. Those memories will be the most beautiful part of my life."
When they waved goodbye, the two girls embraced tightly but did not cry.
As Su Hailu turned to leave, the wind lifted her dress, making her look fragile yet strong.
Once she got into the car, she finally couldn't hold back anymore and buried her face in the steering wheel as she cried.
Thinking back to the first time she met An Shaojie, that tall and thin boy who seemed frail, he was cold yet like a ray of sunshine, warming her heart. His persistent, serious, and determined gaze contained a power that could bring warmth to those around him.
Then there was the first encounter with Lu Chenyu, so bright and sunny, just like the clear and lofty sky of October in Beijing, devoid of any mundane feelings.
When she saw him abroad, at a time when everything seemed to have faded away, he was sitting in a wheelchair, and she thought he was someone else who looked just like him. At that moment, he appeared so dim. However, upon seeing her, his eyes lit up.
It was he who took the initiative to greet her; otherwise, she wouldn't have dared to approach him.
He had been diagnosed with viral myelitis during a physical examination in his junior year. The doctor warned that it could lead to paralysis in the future. From then on, he began to distance himself from Lin Xi little by little, treating her coldly. Yet his heart ached just as much as his body did.
Knowing that his body was on the verge of paralysis, he didn't want her to see him in a wheelchair, so he chose to disappear completely, going abroad not only for treatment but also to escape from her.
He understood her too well; beneath her delicate exterior lay a stubborn heart. If he didn't distance himself further, she would find him no matter how deep he buried himself. Thus, he fled to the other side of the world.
She had gone through a breakup during that time. Unable to cope with her free time, she joined a volunteer service team for international students and was assigned to the hospital where Lu Chenyu was hospitalized. She was fortunate enough to encounter him there.
She had never regretted anything—meeting An Shaojie, Lu Chenyu, Qinglan, Lin Xi—though they led her down many winding paths in life, she knew it wasn't a disaster but rather a stroke of luck.
The love of youth is the most sincere; there are only right and wrong choices but no right or wrong encounters or loves.
Love is love—sincere and without regret—but it hurts deeply and makes one want to cry.
