"Are you sure you're not playing me?" Wang Long said with a bitter laugh.
"Playing you? What do you have that's worth playing?" Dragon Duel's aged voice sounded somewhat puzzled.
"If you're not playing me, then tell me, with my current strength, even the weakest Dragon Soul could kill me in an instant. How am I supposed to fight? The biggest problem is that Dragon Souls are not living dragons; they have no physical form. Without the support of Dragon Qi, how can I harm them?"
"Young man, do not underestimate yourself. The reason humans are known as the Spirit of All Things is because you possess fearless wisdom. Besides, you are not without means; haven't you practiced the Dragon Fist for eighteen years?" Dragon Duel's words were pointed yet vague.
Dragon Fist?
Wang Long was very familiar with the Dragon Fist, a foundational Dragon Technique that anyone in the Dragon Gate could learn. This was because, aside from the Dragon Fist, any other Dragon Techniques required Dragon Qi to operate. This meant that the minimum requirement was to break through the first Dragon Vein before one could learn them. Before breaking through any Dragon Vein, the Dragon Fist was Wang Long's strongest and only Dragon Technique, which he had tirelessly practiced day and night for nearly eighteen years. It would not be an exaggeration to say he had reached a profound level.
If he fought using the Dragon Fist, defeating ten ordinary people would not be impossible. However, using the Dragon Fist against wild and unruly Dragon Souls seemed a bit fantastical.
"You think this way because you don't truly understand the Dragon Fist. If I remember correctly, this technique was created by your first generation Dragon Head and was inspired by your talent for growing stronger when facing challenges. It is effective not only against physical foes but also against enemies in a soul state. The decline of the Dragon Fist is due to your shortsighted descendants failing to recognize its value. The essence of the Dragon Fist lies in its ability to amplify your strength by one or even several times. For example, with your current strength, you could match ten ordinary people. If you can fully execute a complete set of the Dragon Fist, your enemies will suffer damage equivalent to twenty ordinary people's combined strength. Just five strikes would be enough to inflict severe damage on a dragon."
Encouraged by Dragon Duel's words, Wang Long skeptically performed a set of the Dragon Fist. The wind from his punches whistled through the air; he was so familiar with it that despite its complexity, he executed it fluidly. Especially with the final punch, it felt distinctly different; he could indeed sense a significant increase in power, igniting his fighting spirit.
"You say you know the First Generation Dragon Head, so why did he recklessly kill thousands of dragons in the Dragon Gate and end up sealed and nearly dead?"
"Let's not talk about that; it's all in the past now. Even if I told you now, it wouldn't matter. If you want to know, once you become truly powerful, I will tell you. But remember, the truth is always harsh. I'm tired and want to rest for a while; don't disturb me unless it's something important."
The old Dragon Duel clearly did not want to discuss past events, and Wang Long was too lazy to press further. He decisively began searching through the remains of the dragon bones embedded in the rock wall for traces of the Dragon Soul.
...
The Dragon Mound was originally a deep ravine behind Long City. Later, due to that great battle involving Dragon Duel, those giant dragons fell and their corpses piled up into a massive Bone Mountain. Judging by the surrounding environment, Wang Long felt he might be situated at the bottom of this great crevice.
Thinking of the towering cliff above a thousand blades made him feel uneasy. Although he had the assistance of Dragon Duel and the increasingly powerful talent, he still felt no different from an ordinary person. He was far from his father's level of mastery, which allowed him to summon the mighty Dragon Body from within his Dragon Soul and travel a thousand miles a day. How could he return? This was a significant dilemma.
As he wandered lost in thought, the space before him gradually widened, and he could faintly hear the rushing sound of an underground river. He stepped out of the passage and entered a vast natural cave. The ceiling still bore remnants of collapsed stones from who knows how many years ago, with several massive Dragon Bones piercing downwards, already covered in green moss.
Although he was in a Lightless cave, visibility was surprisingly good because a Dragon Soul over a meter long emitted a yellowish light, constantly moving through the soil above.
Based on Wang Long's understanding of dragons, this was a low-level First Rank Earth Dragon. Earth Dragons generally had average attack power but strong defense. Their innate ability allowed them to manipulate the earth, moving freely through it and transforming soil into rock to encase themselves for protection. They posed a minor threat but were quite troublesome.
This Earth Dragon was not high in level, as evidenced by the size of its Dragon Soul. Additionally, a Dragon Soul is formed from the spirit of a dragon after its death, meaning its attributes and abilities, including combat awareness, were far inferior to those when it was alive.
Wang Long analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of both himself and his opponent and found he still had considerable odds of winning. He quickly devised a battle plan and launched an offensive against this weak Earth Dragon.
He first picked up a rock about the size of his fist and hurled it towards the Earth Dragon Soul to attract its attention. Then he swiftly hid behind one of the massive Dragon Bones to conceal himself.
As expected, upon hearing the noise, the Earth Dragon Soul came over as if playing in water. Wang Long waited for it to get halfway before seizing the opportunity. He curled his fingers into hooks resembling Dragon Claws and struck fiercely at the lower midsection of the Earth Dragon Soul with a Dragon Fist.
Initially worried that he hadn't broken through the Dragon Vein or reached the level where Dragon Qi could enter his body, he doubted he would be able to touch the elusive Dragon Soul.
It wasn't until his right fist embedded itself halfway into the body of the Dragon Soul and felt the backlash from hitting something solid that he truly believed what Dragon Duel had said: this Dragon Fist was indeed not just a useless Dragon Technique as most people thought.
The disoriented Earth Dragon Soul instinctively let out a shrill cry in response to the attack, emitting a chilling Dragon Roar that echoed throughout the enclosed cave, stirring up clouds of dust.
Wang Long knew that he was currently alone and lacked the strength for direct confrontation; he had to seize this opportunity to unleash a fierce offensive while his opponent was vulnerable.
A series of swift Dragon Fists struck with considerable force. Before the Earth Dragon Soul could react, he delivered one final blow that sent it floating half a meter off the ground, inflicting some light injuries.
The Earth Dragon Soul roared violently amidst the screams, its yellow aura expanding significantly. The dense Dragon Qi surged around it, attracting chunks of hard, dark brown rock that gathered around the Earth Dragon Soul, quickly forming a dragon body made of rock over a meter long.
The Earth Dragon Soul let out an angry roar and charged at Wang Long. Due to the close distance and rapid speed, Wang Long had no time to react as the solid Earth Dragon composed of rocks rushed towards him.
With no other choice, Wang Long had to lean back forcefully. The sharply defined rock body of the Earth Dragon flew past his nose, crashing into the wall behind him and creating a massive dent.
"Goodness, if that had hit me, I would have been turned into a pulp!" The strike from the Earth Dragon Soul was incredibly fierce; after all, the power of a dragon is unimaginable for an ordinary person. Fortunately, when it crashed, the rock body of the Earth Dragon Soul shattered into rubble, giving Wang Long a brief moment to catch his breath.
The intelligence of a First Rank Dragon Soul was minimal, with almost no capacity for thought. It unleashed its full power in response to provocation without holding back. After missing its attack, during the recovery period of the Dragon Qi, Wang Long was given a golden opportunity for counterattack.
Wang Long did not stop; he leaped three times to get in front of the Earth Dragon Soul and aimed at its head, unleashing a storm of Dragon Fists. Each punch struck hard against the Earth Dragon Soul, causing it to scream in agony, but that was not enough.
While the Earth Dragon's attacks were somewhat weak, its defense was strong. After being injured, it instinctively gathered surrounding rocks for protection, which proved troublesome for Wang Long.
Every time he shattered a rock the size of his fist, he was met with a boulder the size of a basin coming straight at him. Before he could finish his series of Dragon Fists, his two fists were already bleeding and his bones shattered.
"I won't let you block my path to becoming stronger!"
"My life has just begun!"
"Those who stand in my way will die!"
Wang Long was blinded by rage; the pain from his fists transformed into a frenzied drive. His punches became faster and more ferocious than before. When a boulder larger than his entire body blocked his path, he barely thought and charged straight at it, using his skull to break through the rock and clearing the last obstacle between him and the Earth Dragon Soul!
"Die!"
Wang Long raised his fist high, delivering a final blow infused with all his strength, the Dragon Fist, which fiercely pierced through the head of the Earth Dragon Soul. In the next moment, the Earth Dragon Soul let out a desperate roar, and the surrounding golden light dimmed as its aura began to dissipate.
"Did it succeed…"
"Kid, don't let your guard down. This is the crucial moment for you to break through the Dragon Vein. Pay attention!"
After the battle ended, Wang Long's limbs felt weak and his body was exhausted. Just as he was about to breathe a sigh of relief, the voice of Dragon Duel exploded in his mind. Accompanying that voice, he seemed to see a pure white, fierce dragon head emerging from his chest, opening its massive mouth and swallowing the Earth Dragon Soul, which was on the verge of dissipating into Dragon Qi.
The moment the Dragon Soul entered his body, Wang Long felt a scorching heat surge from his lower back and waist, violently rushing upward. It was an immense pain that felt like it was penetrating deep into his bones, as if a sharp knife had been thrust into him, ruthlessly trying to pierce through his body while his body instinctively resisted.
This tug-of-war ultimately ended with the attacking force being overwhelmingly strong, breaking through almost without any suspense. At the moment of breakthrough, Wang Long was astonished to see a somewhat blurry Dragon Qi over a meter long coalescing behind him, surrounding his body.
An unprecedented mysterious energy appeared within him, enhancing his strength.
"I did it! I broke through! Have I finally broken through the first Dragon Vein?"
Wang Long shouted excitedly, overwhelmed with emotion and on the verge of tears. Eighteen years—after eighteen years of countless dreams and aspirations, he had finally achieved it!
