In a urban-style café in Taipei City, a group of formally dressed advertising company employees gathered around a large table. The coffee cups and food on the table exuded a relaxed atmosphere, but the conversation was quite heavy. Colleagues took turns exchanging various news in hushed, deliberative tones.
Colleague A, holding a latte with a slight frown, said, "Do you know that Evan from the fifth floor is dating Michelle from the third floor?"
Colleague B glanced out the window at the bustling traffic, took a sip of Americano, and said, "I've known for a while that they've been inseparable."
Colleague C, known for being straightforward, rolled their eyes and said, "I heard they rented a new place together and are living together."
Colleague D picked up a piece of cheesecake, cut a small piece and put it in his mouth, "But isn't Evan against marriage?"
Colleague A put down the coffee cup, a slight smile on his lips, "I heard that the woman, Michelle, is also against marriage."
Colleague B put the coffee cup back on the table, causing ripples: "No wonder the two of them are getting together. Are these two the same as Peter on the third floor?"
Evan and Michelle often hear rumors circulating among their colleagues. Some they overhear themselves, while others are shared by close coworkers.
At this moment, Evan is in the living room of their modern apartment, leaning against a stylish sofa, engrossed in a design draft.
"How did it come to this?" Evan took a deep breath, set aside his work, adjusted his silver-rimmed glasses, and walked to the window, looking down at the bustling street below. "Our view of love is different from tradition, so why has it become a topic for everyone to gossip about?"
Michelle walked in, having just prepared a cup of hot tea in the kitchen, and placed it on the elegant coffee table. "Yes, I don't understand why not getting married is mistaken for having an open relationship like Peter's."
Evan turned around and looked at Michelle, her eyes revealing confusion and bitterness. "Is the path we're taking really that difficult to understand?"
"No," Michelle walked over and gently embraced Evan, "it's that they're unwilling to understand, or perhaps, they just can't understand."
Evan felt the warm presence of Michelle and suddenly everything seemed less important. "So what should we do next?"
Michelle smiled slightly, as if she had just realized something. "We'll just keep walking our path, without concerning ourselves with their gossip and criticism."
"Will these rumors affect the two of us?" Evan asked.
Michelle shook her head. "No, we can't let outside voices affect our decisions and love. After all, the ones who truly determine our happiness are only ourselves."
"You're right," Evan lowered his head and gently placed a kiss on Michelle's lips. "You always know what you want, and that's one of the reasons I love you."
Looking into Evan's eyes, Michelle said affectionately, "Likewise, you've given me freedom, making me feel that love doesn't need labels or definitions, and that's why I love you."
At this moment, the TV happened to be playing a discussion program about marriage, where experts and scholars were talking as if they could provide a suitable definition for everyone's love.
Evan turned to Michelle and said, "You see, that's how society is. They love to judge others based on their own standards. But as long as we stick to our own beliefs and don't let these external voices affect us, our love will not deteriorate."
Michelle nodded, "Yes, we know that loving the right person is enough, and this love doesn't need a marriage contract to prove it."
Evan picked up the remote, turned off the TV, then turned to look deeply into Michelle's eyes. "So, we don't need to prove anything, we just need to be ourselves and continue walking this chosen path."
Michelle felt a warm feeling and decided to walk the path of not getting married with Evan. It was not to escape or avoid responsibility, but rather due to their shared family backgrounds that made them fear marriage. Therefore, they wanted to seek a deeper understanding and acceptance, so that marriage wouldn't lead to the deterioration of their love.
"So, what should we do next?" Evan asked.
Michelle tightly embraced Evan, deeply aware of how difficult it is to find someone who truly understands and supports her in this overly traditional and conservative society. "Continue to love, continue to trust, not changing for anyone, only for ourselves."
Just then, Evan's phone suddenly rang. He picked it up and saw that it was a call from the company.
"I'm sorry, I have to take this call," Evan reluctantly let go of Michelle.
"It's okay, work is work," Michelle smiled contentedly, secretly glad that they could at least find a balance between love and work.
Evan walked to the side and answered the phone. After a few minutes, he hung up, showing a hint of fatigue on his face.
"What's wrong? Is there a problem?" Michelle asked with concern.
"I have a big case to finish first, looks like I'll have to work overtime these few days," Evan said somewhat helplessly.
"Is there anything I can do to help you?"
"No, it's not necessary," Evan said with a smile. "Having you here with me is already the best support."
Michelle felt the warmth in her heart and understood that as long as they loved and understood each other, they could face any difficulties together.
"I'll stay here with you," Michelle responded.
Evan nodded and turned to enter the studio, immersing himself in the upcoming busy work. But no matter what, his love with Michelle would be his strongest support.
