She shook her head, perhaps she was just overthinking!
After getting off the car, they realized they had only just arrived at the foot of the mountain and had not yet entered. The trees at the base were already enough to astonish them, let alone what the scene would be like up in the mountains.
"Why is it so terrifying here? I should have taken a leave of absence," Linyuan said timidly, shrinking her neck.
Su Jin'er comfortingly patted her shoulder and said, "There's nothing we can do; we've already come."
"But the air is still quite good," Du Xiaonan said as she closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
Su Jin'er turned to look at Li Yiqian, only to find her quietly standing there, gazing at the mountain peak, lost in thought.
"Now, let me explain the personnel assignments, and then everyone can take a break before we start our training for today."
"Will we be assigned together?" Linyuan whispered, seeming particularly timid since arriving here.
"Why are you so scared today? How can you become a forensic doctor like this?"
It seemed Su Jin'er had hit a nerve; Linyuan stomped her foot and said, "I’m not scared! I'm just a bit unaccustomed to it." Her voice clearly lacked confidence.
"Alright, everyone quiet down," the leading teacher suddenly said. "Today's training is a bit special, so everyone needs to be mentally prepared. You must follow the arrangements and not run around."
Next, they began to divide everyone into groups, with each group consisting of ten people, making a total of three groups.
Su Jin'er, Linyuan, Du Xiaonan, Li Yiqian, Chu Feifan, Zuo Yi, Zhang Junsheng, Xu Mengguang, Xu Lingling, and Zhang Yang formed a group. Once everyone found their teammates, they began preparing to enter the mountains. However, when they were ready to go, they discovered that the coach and teachers had set up a tent in a clean area.
"Coach, aren't you going with us?" a student asked loudly, drawing the attention of all the classmates toward the coach and teachers with puzzled looks.
"We're not leading you; we'll wait here for your return. Remember, there's only one way out of the mountain, so you must come back before dark," the coach replied.
The content of this Military Training was not particularly difficult. The school had placed three flags in a certain location in the mountains ahead of time and tasked the students with finding and bringing them back to complete the mission. Although it sounded simple, being in such a vast mountain made it seem quite challenging.
"What kind of mission is this? In such a big mountain, how can we find such small flags? The school is really cruel!" Du Xiaonan complained.
"The school provided us with a map! Actually, what they're doing is to train us!" a boy's voice suddenly chimed in.
The others turned to look at him as he smiled and said, "Hello everyone, my name is Chu Feifan. Please introduce yourselves too! That way we can take care of each other!"
Everyone agreed it made sense and began to introduce themselves. By the time everyone had shared their names, they had already left the main path and started ascending the mountain.
Chu Feifan was a very handsome boy with fair skin that didn't give an unhealthy impression. His deep-set eyes sparkled brightly, and his long eyelashes made girls envious. With a high nose bridge and thin lips, he had a face that was unforgettable after just one glance.
Perhaps due to Chu Feifan's remarkable appearance, everyone unconsciously followed his lead.
Su Jin'er looked at the towering trees overhead as an uneasy feeling surged within her again. She glanced around but could no longer see the other two teams; she was surprised at how quickly they had disappeared from view. The abundance of trees made the surroundings somewhat dim as everyone carefully stepped on fallen leaves and moved forward. Chu Feifan held the map and led the way; the red mark on the map indicated the location of the flag they were searching for, which seemed quite far from where they currently were.
"Chu Feifan, can I see the map?" a girl suddenly asked.
Su Jin'er glanced at her; she must be Xu Lingling! Each team consists of five men and five women, and she recognized the other four girls, so this had to be Xu Lingling.
Xu Lingling appeared to be the kind of delicate girl with a fair complexion and shallow dimples on her face. Although she wasn't very beautiful, her smile had a charm that made one feel protective of her.
"Okay." Chu Feifan handed her the map, but his gaze subtly drifted toward Su Jin'er.
Su Jin'er walked behind Xu Lingling. After glancing at the map, she started moving forward. Linyuan caught up with her from behind and said, "Don't you think Chu Feifan is handsome?"
"He is handsome! What's wrong with that?" she replied nonchalantly, though her eyes were searching around.
"Do you like him?"
Hearing this, Su Jin'er helplessly withdrew her gaze and said, "Come on, our mission right now is to find the Flag, okay? Can you not be so infatuated?"
Linyuan stuck out her tongue and said, "Alright, got it."
"Ah!"
Suddenly, a sharp scream pierced the quiet sky.
"What happened?" Chu Feifan quickly walked over to Xu Lingling and asked with concern.
"I don't know; I think something bit my leg," Xu Lingling said with tears in her eyes.
Xu Lingling was wearing a dress, and Chu Feifan carefully crouched down to check her leg. "Oh! It's nothing, it seems like you just got scratched by a branch."
"Just a scratch from a branch, is it necessary to make such a fuss?" Linyuan was particularly intolerant of delicate girls. She glanced at Xu Lingling, snorted, and continued walking ahead.
"Isn't it natural to be scared in a place like this?" Xu Lingling continued to speak weakly, completely missing the sarcasm in Linyuan's words.
"Disgusting," Du Xiaonan also found it hard to watch.
Xu Lingling shot her a glare and slowly leaned her body against Chu Feifan, looking at them with a victorious gaze. Chu Feifan reached out to steady her and said, "Let's keep going! Otherwise, we won't make it back before dark."
Xu Lingling nodded and cautiously followed behind Chu Feifan.
"Hey, Jin'er, you should have Chu Feifan take care of you! If you go to him, he definitely won't pay attention to that Xu Lingling anymore," Linyuan said while pulling Su Jin'er by the arm.
"I don't need anyone to take care of me."
Chu Feifan heard everything they said, and when he heard Su Jin'er say she didn't need anyone to take care of her, a hint of disappointment flashed in his eyes.
"You are always so strong-willed."
"Do you guys smell something strange?" Zuo Yi suddenly said.
Hearing his words, everyone took a deep breath but shook their heads, indicating they didn't smell anything.
"It smells like something is burning," Su Jin'er said.
"The smell is coming from over there," Chu Feifan added.
"Let's go take a look!" Li Yiqian, who had been silent, also caught the scent and stepped forward.
Su Jin'er looked in the direction she was heading and said with some concern, "But it seems like this is taking us away from where we were supposed to go."
"That's okay, let's take this opportunity for an adventure!" Chu Feifan said, looking at Su Jin'er with enthusiasm.
"Yeah!"
Everyone agreed, and since she couldn't say much against it, Su Jin'er followed along.
The fallen leaves underfoot grew thicker, and the decaying foliage combined with the unknown smell in the air became somewhat pungent. The further they walked, the stronger the odor became. Finally, they saw a flicker of fire ahead.
"It really is the smell of something burning! Jin'er, your nose is so sharp!" Linyuan exclaimed upon seeing the flames.
"But what are they burning? The smell is terrible!"
As they spoke, they moved closer. Ahead, a woman knelt by the fire, slowly tossing something into it, and faint sobs could be heard.
"It seems like she's crying," Du Xiaonan whispered to Linyuan.
Hearing footsteps, the woman looked up and saw them, her face displaying a look of terror as she trembled and said, "Who are you? Why are you here?"
Xu Lingling immediately got scared and hid behind Chu Feifan.
"Big sister, we are students from the medical school, here for military training," Su Jin'er stepped forward to explain.
"Leave this place immediately; this is not where you should be," the woman said sharply, her expression growing even more fearful.
"Why?" Chu Feifan asked as he walked over to Su Jin'er.
"If I tell you to leave, then leave! Be careful or you'll be cursed."
Upon hearing the word "curse," everyone gasped. Su Jin'er was even more confused; wasn't this place desolate? How could there be a woman here burning something? Remembering the fire, she leaned closer to the pile and took a look, only to step back in fright.
The woman seemed to sense something and quickly gathered her things to leave, as if this group of people carried a plague.
"Don't listen to her nonsense; let's just keep moving!" Chu Feifan, sensing Su Jin'er's unease, tried to comfort her.
"Look at what she was burning just now," Su Jin'er crouched down and picked up a stick to poke at the still smoldering fire.
Hearing her, Chu Feifan also crouched down to examine it closely. "It seems like some animal bones."
"Bones? No wonder it smells so bad. But why was she burning these bones?" Linyuan stood beside Jin'er.
"Maybe she is mourning someone!" Li Yiqian's voice came softly.
Hearing Li Yiqian's words, the already frightened crowd trembled even more, standing frozen in place. The surroundings seemed to grow darker, and the sun that should have appeared never did.
"Perhaps it's blocked by the trees," Jin'er thought as she looked up at the sky.
"Everyone, don't be afraid. Let's find Flag quickly and leave this place!" Chu Feifan said, looking at the crowd.
Just as everyone was preparing to leave, a scream pierced through the group again. This time, it was a boy's voice, filled with terror as he stared at a spot behind Jin'er, seemingly witnessing something horrifying.
"What are you shouting about?" Zhang Junsheng said angrily. Hearing such curses was already frightening enough.
"I just saw a shadow flash by over there, moving as fast as the wind," Xu Mengguang said, pointing shakily behind Jin'er, his teeth chattering.
"Is that woman back again?" Du Xiaonan asked.
"No, it's not her. The woman was wearing black, but what I saw was a white shadow."
"Let's go back! This place is too scary!" Xu Lingling tugged at Chu Feifan's shirt.
"Alright, everyone stop jumping to conclusions. Let's go back and continue searching for Flag!" Su Jin'er said impatiently. She really didn't want to stay there any longer; the oppressive atmosphere made it hard to breathe.
