"Yes, I heard someone knocking on the door, but I didn't hear any footsteps coming upstairs," Su Jin'er said. "By the way, you mentioned seeing something written on the wall. What did it say?"
"It was a line written in red pen! I think it might be someone's prank!" Li Yiqian replied nonchalantly.
"What did it say?"
"Everyone is going to die; not a single one will escape." She still looked completely unconcerned.
Linyuan's mouth dropped open in surprise. "You saw something like that and aren't scared at all?"
"It’s probably just a prank!" Su Jin'er said.
"I think so too!" Du Xiaonan's voice trembled, but she still echoed the sentiment.
The dormitory fell silent as everyone pondered the questions swirling in their minds. Suddenly, the lights went out.
"Who turned off the lights?" Du Xiaonan asked hoarsely. She had just been thinking about a horror movie she had seen before, and the sudden darkness startled her.
"Maybe it's time for lights out!" Su Jin'er replied.
"Isn't it supposed to be lights out at eleven? It's only ten-thirty now," Li Yiqian said slowly, a faint yellow light still glowing from her bed; it was her phone.
Su Jin'er closed her eyes, suddenly feeling very tired; her eyelids felt heavy and she couldn't open them at all.
At some point, a strong wind began to blow outside, howling like someone was crying.
"Is someone crying?" Su Jin'er suddenly opened her eyes.
The wind outside seemed to be getting stronger, making a clattering sound against the window frame.
Su Jin'er glanced at her watch; it was already twelve o'clock. When had she fallen asleep? She shook her slightly dazed head and sat up in bed.
Perhaps the window wasn't closed tightly! She had felt a breeze blowing on her face.
Suddenly, she felt something brush against her face. It was pitch black in front of her, and she couldn't see anything. She reached out to touch it.
It was hair!
When did Linyuan start letting her hair hang down from the bed?
She got out of bed and walked to the balcony, intending to close the window tightly.
Just as she was about to shut the window, she suddenly saw a shadow moving downstairs. Who could be awake at this hour? She pushed the window open, and the wind tousled her hair. She shivered involuntarily and widened her eyes, trying to see who it was below, but it was too far away; all she could make out was a vague white silhouette.
She shook her head and closed the window. Whoever it was had nothing to do with her.
Standing by the bed, she looked at Linyuan sleeping on the upper bunk but realized that Linyuan wasn't in bed at all. Whose hair had she just seen?
A cold sweat broke out on her suddenly. She reached out to touch Linyuan's bed; it was still warm, meaning Linyuan had just left.
Bending down, she fished out a flashlight from her bed. The weak light illuminated Liyiqian's bed, but strangely, she wasn't there either. Only Du Xiaonan was sleeping soundly in her bed.
Su Jin'er could ignore others' affairs, but she couldn't overlook Linyuan's situation. She opened the bathroom door quietly to check inside, but there was no one there. She stealthily opened the door and stepped outside.
The corridor of the dormitory was silent, with not a sound to be heard, only the soft footsteps of Su Jin'er and the sound of the wind outside, creating a terrifying atmosphere.
Su Jin'er held a flashlight and carefully descended to the third floor. She looked around the corridor and, finding no one, went down to the second floor. The second floor was just as empty. Suddenly, she recalled seeing the White Shadow upstairs. Could it be one of them?
At this late hour, Linyuan wouldn’t come down without a reason, so she must have discovered something. Really, didn’t she tell her not to get involved in this matter?
Su Jin'er thought angrily.
When she reached the first floor, she found the door locked. Were they still in the dormitory, or was there another way out? She cautiously turned around on the first floor with her flashlight but found no exit from the dormitory. Just as she was about to go back upstairs, a sudden cold wind blew through. All the windows here were closed; how could there be a cold breeze?
She followed the direction of the wind and discovered that there was a broken window next to the dormitory management room. She turned off her flashlight and slowly approached.
The window was just big enough for a person to squeeze through sideways. She crouched down and carefully passed through the broken window. The wind outside was strong, blowing her hair against her face, making it nearly impossible to open her eyes.
Suddenly, someone covered her mouth with their hand. As she widened her eyes to see who it was, a voice whispered in her ear, “Jin'er, it’s me. Don’t speak.”
Su Jin'er nodded.
“Xiaoyuan, what are you doing here?” she asked softly.
“I saw Li Yiqian come out, so I followed her. Come on, let’s see where she’s going at this hour,” Linyuan said quietly.
“I told you not to meddle in other people’s affairs! Why don’t you listen?” Su Jin'er scolded.
“I know, but she didn’t seem awake; could she be sleepwalking? I’m worried something might happen to her.”
Hearing her words, Su Jin'er said, "Alright, let's follow and see."
"Let's go. She must have gone to the Old Laboratory Building. We should be careful as we follow," Linyuan said, pulling Su Jin'er's hand. Su Jin'er could feel the sweat forming in her palm.
Sure enough, as they approached the Old Laboratory, they saw Li Yiqian walking in with a stiff body, looking as if she were truly sleepwalking.
"I heard from the elders that you shouldn't call out to someone who is sleepwalking; otherwise, it might scare them to death."
"Yes, I've heard that too, which is why I didn't call out to her. I just followed along."
"How did you know that window was broken and could be opened?"
"I came out with Li Yiqian. At first, I was puzzled when I saw it too. But I didn't think too much about it; I just wanted to see what she was up to."
At this point, they had reached the door of the Old Laboratory. The door was open, and they cautiously pushed it open. Inside was pitch black, darker than outside.
Su Jin'er turned on her flashlight and carefully stepped inside. The beam revealed dust floating in the air. Su Jin'er looked around but found no one.
Just as they were about to head upstairs, Su Jin'er suddenly grabbed Linyuan's arm and said, "Don't move; someone is talking."
She held Linyuan's hand and hid in the dark corner of the staircase.
From upstairs, they could vaguely hear someone speaking.
"Did you bring what I asked you to get?"
It was the voice of a man.
"I brought it, but you have to tell me what I need to know first; otherwise, I won't give it to you." It was Li Yiqian's voice.
"Of course, I'll tell you, but you need to show me what I asked you to bring first."
Su Jin'er whispered, "It seems like they are making some kind of deal. Did you see her carrying anything when you came out with Li Yiqian?"
"It looked like she was holding something the whole time."
"Let's listen to what they say next."
"Should we go take a look?"
"No!"
At that moment, it seemed that Li Yiqian had already shown him the item.
"Now you can tell me, right?"
"I don't know much about that matter. All I know is that after she died, her body went missing twice. The first time it was found in the cafeteria, but after the second disappearance, it has never been located."
"Where did you learn all this?"
"My brother is a police officer. I accidentally found out from him. And there's something very important—do you want to know?" The man suddenly spoke mysteriously.
"Speak quickly, or I won't give you these things."
Then there was a very quiet conversation that Su Jin'er and Linyuan couldn't hear.
"What?" Li Yiqian said in surprise.
Li Yiqian's voice sounded surprised, but there was more anger than anything else.
Then they heard footsteps coming down the stairs.
"I think they should be coming down soon; we should leave first," Su Jin'er said, pulling Linyuan out of the Old Laboratory. "We need to get back to the dormitory before her."
"I know a shortcut; let's take it," Linyuan said, grabbing Su Jin'er's hand and heading toward the back of the Old Laboratory.
Behind the Old Laboratory was a forest, and at the edge of that forest was a small gate. Passing through the gate would lead them directly to Dormitory 4, allowing them to reach their dormitory first without raising Li Yiqian's suspicions.
Fortunately, they encountered no obstacles along the way and successfully returned to their dormitory. Just as they lay down on their beds, they heard Li Yiqian's footsteps coming upstairs.
Su Jin'er turned over, facing the wall, while Linyuan pulled the blanket over her head, leaving only her eyes exposed as she quietly watched outside.
After a long time, when silence returned to the dormitory, Su Jin'er turned over again, facing outward. She wondered who the man meeting Li Yiqian was and what kind of deal they were making. Why did Li Yiqian sound surprised and angry upon hearing that man's last words? What were those words?
What did they mean by saying that the corpse had gone missing twice? The first time it was found in the cafeteria? The cafeteria? She suddenly remembered that during lunch today, Xu Lingling mentioned that Xiaoqing's corpse had appeared on that dining table. So does this mean that the corpse Li Yiqian referred to was Xiaoqing's? But Xiaoqing died five years ago; what does that have to do with Li Yiqian? Why would she care so much about Li Yiqian?
After thinking for a long time without any clarity, she decided to let it go. She had promised not to get involved in these matters anyway; after all, it had nothing to do with her.
Thinking of this, she closed her eyes.
However, just less than five minutes after she closed her eyes, she heard a loud thud, as if something had fallen from upstairs. Startled, she quickly sat up; the sound was dull, yet in the stillness of the night, it felt unusually jarring.
“Jin'er, did you hear that? It sounded like something fell,” Linyuan's voice suddenly came from the upper bunk.
“Yeah, I heard it. Why aren't you asleep?”
“I don't know. It feels like there's always a cold wind creeping into my neck. I can't sleep.”
Su Jin'er thought for a moment; she had closed the window herself tonight, so there shouldn't be any cold wind. But why had she been feeling an ominous premonition ever since entering this school?
“Maybe you didn't cover yourself well enough!” She wasn't sure how to comfort her. Should she tell her that she had been feeling uneasy too?
“What do you think fell just now? Should we go check it out?”
“Let's not. I think it was just the wind blowing something away. Let's go to sleep and not overthink it.” Even as she said this, her heart kept pounding as if it would leap out of her mouth, but she couldn't tell Linyuan.
The next morning, before Su Jin'er had fully woken up, she was startled awake by a commotion. She glanced at the watch by her bed; it was only a little past five. Why was it so noisy outside? It sounded like police sirens too.
Her eyes widened suddenly, all sleepiness gone. Could that thud last night have been someone jumping off? She quickly got dressed and woke Linyuan, who was still dreaming.
When they rushed downstairs together, the area was already crowded with students. Linyuan pulled Su Jin'er’s hand and pushed forward. As they reached the front of the police cordon, they caught sight of a shattered body covered with a white cloth by the police. Strangely, there wasn't a drop of blood on the ground.
“Why is there no blood?”
Hearing Su Jin'er’s words, Linyuan realized that there wasn't even a drop of blood on the ground.
Since the corpse's face was down, they couldn't see who the deceased was.
"The person who died is Xu Mengguang." Chu Feifan appeared next to Su Jin'er without them noticing.
Su Jin'er looked up at him and asked, "How do you know?"
"The clothes; he is still wearing the outfit he had during Military Training." Chu Feifan pointed to a corner of the white cloth that was exposed.
Chu Feifan was not wrong; the clothes on the deceased were indeed identical to those Xu Mengguang wore during Military Training, but that didn't necessarily mean this person was Xu Mengguang!
Perhaps sensing Su Jin'er’s thoughts, Chu Feifan continued, "Four days ago, Xu Mengguang took a leave of absence. No one knows where he went. It was the day after he took leave that Xu Lingling said she saw his corpse. Do you remember?"
"Yes, it was that morning, and then the corpse disappeared." Su Jin'er replied.
"When did this happen? How come I didn't know?" Linyuan asked in confusion.
