My dad finally relented and agreed to sign the Investment contract with Lu Zhou.
However, the official seal on the contract had already expired during the review process, requiring a formal application for approval and a new signature.
During this time gap, in order to maintain the appearance of normal operations for the project, Lu Zhou nearly exhausted all his available funds.
He deployed someone he had placed in the Meng family's financial system early on, but was caught red-handed.
My dad immediately called the police, who quickly took away Lu Zhou and his accomplices, as well as those involved in the fraudulent Investment project.
He was the illegitimate son of the Lu family. Unable to compete for the family inheritance against the legitimate children, he set his sights on the currently thriving Meng Family.
"It was a gamble," Meng Jinzhi said. "Only, he lost."
At the time this happened, I was sitting at Fu Yan's studio desk.
He closed his eyes briefly, as if struggling to say something difficult: "Meng Xi, can you help me one more time?"
Without Lu Zhou's support and being secretly suppressed by my dad, his studio was on the verge of collapse.
I looked at him coldly: "Are you asking me for help?"
"…Yes."
I laughed: "Is this how you ask for help? Kneel down and say a few flattering words, and then I'll consider it."
He suddenly raised his head and stared at me intently.
Our eyes collided, and a moment later, Fu Yan gritted his teeth and knelt down in front of me.
His face was filled with humiliation, and his voice was laced with resentment.
"Please help me."
I stood up and kicked him in the chest with my high heel.
"How ridiculous, Fu Yan. Do you really think I don't know what you've done? Why do you think I would help you?"
He awkwardly got up from the ground, his eyes red.
"Meng Xi, I'm your boyfriend."
I scoffed, "Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that we broke up."
A fleeting look of disbelief crossed his face as he stared at me.
I suppose it was shocking for him.
In the past, I had loved him wholeheartedly. Even when I said harsh words or argued with him, I never mentioned breaking up.
He must have been certain deep down that my change in attitude was just a result of my spoiled nature.
It was simply dissatisfaction stemming from seeing Su Yue.
He thought I couldn't live without him.
And in reality, that was indeed the case.
If it weren't for the awakened memories, I would have already been trying to come up with a tired excuse for a breakup under the premise that the Meng Family is facing bankruptcy, taking all the blame upon myself.
I would never know that Fu Yan's success was built on the corpses of my family members.
After a moment, he took a deep breath and asked, "Why? Are you just tired of me?"
"Because you're unlucky; you will drain my family's fortune."
I appreciated the fleeting panic in his eyes.
"A man's dignity is precious, isn't it? If you truly felt humiliated, why didn't you refuse me from the start? You conspired with others to covet my family's possessions while shamelessly asking me for help. Tell me, isn't that pathetic?"
Outside, the sound of police sirens grew closer.
It seemed Lu Zhou had already revealed his accomplices.
When the police pushed the door open, I leaned against the table and looked at him calmly:
"Fu Yan, your dream of soaring to success ends here."
Once everything was settled, I met with Lin Liuliu again and thanked her for those remarks she made in front of Lu Zhou, whether intentionally or not.
"It was just a casual comment; there's no need for you to thank me."
Lin Liuliu waved her hand dismissively and glanced out the window. "I heard that you and Meng Jinzhi are together now."
I held my wine glass and looked at her. "Are you angry?"
"Why would I be angry?"
"You mentioned before that you have a bit of interest in Meng Jinzhi."
"Hmm."
Lin Liuliu chuckled lightly.
"I've noticed for a while now that this guy has ulterior motives towards you. I just wanted to test the waters, but I didn't expect you to have no reaction at all. Instead, you've taken a liking to that two-faced Fu Yan."
"Do you know how they laughed at you when we went out recently? They said you were love-struck, throwing money around and finding people for him, while others wouldn't even say a kind word."
She glanced at my empty glass and pushed the bottle of wine towards me.
"At least you're sober now. Otherwise, if Lu Zhou and your ex-boyfriend teamed up, we probably would never see each other again."
She was right.
According to the storyline, after the Meng Family went bankrupt, I indeed never saw Lin Liuliu again.
I finished my last drink, said goodbye to Lin Liuliu, and walked out the door.
Meng Jinzhi was waiting by the car, looking at me in the moonlight.
I spoke up, my voice hoarse from the alcohol: "Why aren't you coming in with me?"
"Normally, as the young lady's friend, I should stay outside as the butler."
I shook my head and wrapped my arms around his waist: "But you're not a butler."
"You are my boyfriend, Meng Jinzhi."
I reached out and pinched his flushed earlobe, suddenly struck by an idea:
"Getting an ear piercing here and wearing a diamond stud would look great, right?"
In the next moment, the alcohol hit me, and I slumped down, only to be lifted up by him, curling up in his embrace.
"If the young lady wants to see it, I'll get it done tomorrow."
"I'll do whatever you like."
He placed me in the Co-Driver seat and fastened my seatbelt.
I glared at his smoothly contoured profile, provocatively asking, "So, when do you plan to change how you address me?"
"When we sleep together tonight, will you still call me 'young lady'?"
His hands suddenly tightened on the steering wheel, and after a moment, he started the car.
Accompanied by a very soft voice that reached my ears like a falling feather.
"If you like me to call you that."
