I held onto the hope of seeing Mu Miaomiao, and her astonishment was evident on her face. After examining me for a few minutes, she solemnly asked, "Are you still the Zhuang Jun I know?"
I was left speechless by the question. In the past, Mu Miaomiao often praised me, saying that I viewed everything with a calm and rational perspective. It wasn't that I didn't socialize; rather, I found it beneath me. I valued facts and truths more than emotions.
But Wang Xu was different for me; he was the person I chose to spend the second half of my life with. My hopes and understanding of him ran deeper than my understanding of myself. How could I completely deny my loving husband because of a suspected woman's involvement?
After three years of marriage, I chose to silently endure.
"Zhuang Jun, have you really thought this through? I've gathered all the information for you; don't you want to hear it?" Mu Miaomiao repeated.
I feigned calmness, but inside I was extremely flustered and confused. Yet, amidst all the negative emotions, I chose to believe in him.
"I don't want to know right now. Just consider that I never contacted you; it might be a misunderstanding. I don't want to hurt the feelings between Wang Xu and me."
With my head down, I spoke to myself quietly. I didn't even dare to look at Mu Miaomiao; I feared seeing disappointment in her eyes and reflecting my own embarrassment back at me.
"Zhuang Jun, forget it. Since you've made up your mind, I won't say much more. But if you ever want to know, feel free to come find me," Mu Miaomiao said with a self-deprecating smile. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see her looking lonely. "Maybe I haven't experienced marriage, but I think the most important things between two people are honesty and loyalty."
After grabbing her handbag, Mu Miaomiao slowly stood up and turned to leave. I knew I had disappointed her somewhat—disappointed her with my weakness.
I returned home feeling confused. As soon as I reached the entrance of the community, the security guard in the booth greeted me warmly: "Mrs. Wang, there's a package for you. Let me find it."
It was the massager I bought during the last group purchase. My mother-in-law often complained about her lumbar issues, and since the group purchase price seemed reasonable, I ordered it. Calculating the time, it should have arrived today.
I nodded slightly as the security guard was about to enter but was stopped by a resident of the community who said there was an issue with their electrical box at home and wanted him to come along to take a look.
The security guard looked at me hesitantly, and I forced a smile, saying, "You can go. I'll find it myself."
I guessed he thought I was upset because he couldn't help me find my package, and he kept apologizing to me. Amidst the urging from others, he turned and left.
Not knowing how to explain, I walked helplessly toward the guardhouse. The packages were piled up in one corner of a cabinet. I started pulling them out one by one to check. Before I could find mine, I unexpectedly came across a name that was both strange and familiar.
Deng Xiaomei.
I trembled with anger, gripping the package tightly without realizing it. What a twist of fate! Perhaps it was intentional by the heavens; Deng Xiaomei had indeed become a solid fact in our community, her address clearly printed on the package.
Dongguan Community, Building A, 402.
Hah... Hah...
It turned out my life had begun to decay not long ago, while I had just been thinking like an ostrich, believing that things wouldn't develop as I feared.
Three years ago, Wang Xu knelt on one knee and slipped a ring onto my unnamed finger. After that, he held an ordinary key and brought me to this newly built community. As I watched the elevator's number change to five, Wang Xu held my hand and said this was our home.
He bought this apartment with the down payment given by his mother to surprise me, saying he wanted to give me a safe haven from the storms. Thus, I happily moved in and lived in Building A, 502.
It turned out that Deng Xiaomei and I were just a wall apart. The thirty-something frequently used addresses displayed on Wang Xu's phone were the sum of the fifth floor and the fourth floor!
How could Wang Xu do this to me? How could he act like this? During all the days I was kept in the dark, what exactly did he do? Even if the neighbors are cold to each other now, doesn’t he fear being seen?
Or has he already prepared for being seen, letting me know, prompting me to leave on my own?
At this point, I have no feelings left for Wang Xu. If he still considers me his wife, how could he bring someone to hang out right downstairs from our home? At that moment, did he ever think of me or remember the promises he once made?
I can no longer deceive myself.
Before the security guard returned, I quickly tossed the package in my large bag and left the guardhouse, but I didn’t dare go home. I immediately called Mu Miaomiao, and within ten minutes, she parked her car at the entrance of the community.
I hurried into Mu Miaomiao's car. Before she could say anything, my nose tinged with sadness. I couldn’t look at her and buried my head, asking her to drive far away—anywhere would be fine as long as it wasn’t this hellish place at that moment.
Mu Miaomiao didn’t speak. She gently helped me fasten my seatbelt and pressed down on the accelerator. If it weren’t for the seatbelt, I might have flown out of my seat.
