I still didn't have the courage to open Deng Xiaomei's message, so I switched to my usual WeChat account and put my phone into my bag before heading out.
Just as I reached the door, the security guard stopped me and handed me a package. "Mrs. Wang, your parcel is here. It's the same one from last time. Why didn't you pick it up then?"
"I suddenly had something come up, so I left it with you. I planned to come back for it in a couple of days, but I forgot."
"Hey, I was wondering why your package was still here. I kept it for you while I was on night shift."
"Thank you."
I took the heavy package back home, and after putting away the massager I bought for my mother-in-law, I felt a whirlwind of anxiety. Deng Xiaomei's package had been opened by Mu Miaomiao at that time; how could she not have inquired about it after so many days without receiving her delivery?
What I feared most was Deng Xiaomei discovering this. If she found out, what would she do? Would Wang Xu know as well?
I couldn't deny that Deng Xiaomei had become a massive bomb in my life; if she wanted to, she could completely destroy my existence.
In the evening, when Wang Xu got off work, I was in the kitchen making soup. Hearing the door open, I went out to see my mother-in-law returning with Wang Xu.
I suddenly felt a sense that things might get better.
"What are you cooking? It smells so good," Wang Xu said with a smile as he changed his shoes and came over to me with a playful expression.
It had been several days since I'd seen my mother-in-law, and today, seeing her made me pause. Looking at Wang Xu's expression, I explained to my mother-in-law, "Mom, these are some dried goods my dad brought over from our hometown a few days ago. I've made some chicken soup; you can try it later."
My mother-in-law coldly glanced at me, then lowered her head to put on her shoes and walked into the living room to sit down, picking up the remote to turn on the television.
Her cold treatment made my heart sink, but I had already decided to maintain this family and my relationship with Wang Xu. I couldn't back down from the start over such a trivial matter.
I nudged Wang Xu and handed him the package that was left in the entrance. He mumbled, "What is this? It's pretty heavy," while examining the words on the package. I, however, was carefully watching Wang Xu.
If his reaction was not just an act, then he genuinely didn't know about the package. It was better that way; I felt a bit relieved.
Suddenly, his gaze swept over to me, and I nervously explained, "This is a massager I bought for Mom. You said her spine isn't good, and I looked it up; this one is commonly used."
Wang Xu's eyes were filled with delight as he gave me a thumbs-up, praising me as the best daughter-in-law. He pecked my cheek affectionately and carried the massager into the living room, unboxing it in front of my mother-in-law while continuing to compliment me.
Throughout it all, my mother-in-law never said a single kind word to me. Although I hoped for some improvement, I didn't expect to resolve our conflicts immediately; it would be a long journey. I silently encouraged myself.
During dinner, I picked up a piece of mushroom and placed it in my mother-in-law's bowl. "Mom, this is specially prepared by Dad for you. He heard you love this and had someone save the best for you."
The mushroom remained in her bowl as I watched her with anticipation. Wang Xu was smiling, but my mother-in-law let out a cold snort and replied in a strange tone, "Me? So fond of grandchildren? Yet I can't even see one."
Just as Wang Xu was about to speak, I interrupted him: "Mom, Wang Xu and I are planning to try hard. You mentioned that the herbal medicine from Old Doctor in that village worked quite well; we're going there this weekend."
At my words, both Wang Xu and my mother-in-law froze simultaneously. I couldn't forget how my mother-in-law slowly turned her head to look at Wang Xu without a hint of joy.
