Wang Yue still had a smile on her face. When the three of us lined up for our facial treatments, Wang Yue suddenly seemed interested in me. After asking a few casual questions, she was interrupted by Miao Miao, who bluntly said, "Wang Yue, can't you be quiet? Talking while getting a facial? Aren't you afraid of getting wrinkles?"
Wang Yue chuckled and stopped talking.
I shot a surprised glance at Miao Miao. She usually had a carefree attitude but was polite to others. Why was she so harsh with Wang Yue? Wang Yue, on the other hand, seemed unfazed by Miao Miao's comments and just laughed it off.
Fortunately, Miao Miao interrupted her in time; otherwise, I wouldn't have known how to respond during this awkward period of losing both my family and my job.
When the three of us went downstairs, the atmosphere in the private room was lively. A man named Zheng Cheng, with a fierce look, waved at us as we entered. "Wang Yue, come here! Look at your Lu Ge; he’s made quite a bit of money in such a short time. Hurry up and ask him for two bags."
Wang Yue walked over with a smile and naturally sat down next to Lu Ming, counting the chips.
Miao Miao linked arms with me and sat down next to Wang Nan. After a while, Wang Nan stood up and said he wanted Miao Miao to have a turn playing.
Miao Miao hesitated to refuse, but everyone around encouraged her to play a couple of rounds for fun. She looked at me for approval, and since I had no objections, she agreed.
As a result, everyone started urging Lu Ming to find someone to play for him too; otherwise, it would be unfair for him to win all night long.
Their intentions were clear enough that even I, an outsider, could tell they were trying to matchmake him with Wang Yue. Lu Ming withdrew his hand from the table and stood up under everyone's gaze but was looking at me.
"Come here."
Everyone turned their attention to me, their gazes meaningful, especially Wang Yue's; her smile had frozen.
I waved my hand to refuse, but Lu Ming silently insisted.
The atmosphere grew increasingly awkward as Miao Miao lightly cleared her throat, tapping the cards in her hand on the table in a casual rhythm. She said loudly, "I wonder why Lu Ge is still squeezing his employees during off hours. Zhuang Jun is your employee, but she's also my good sister. Today, her salary should be counted at three times the normal rate, don't you think?"
To others, this statement was a veiled emphasis that I had no relationship with Lu Ming; I was merely an employee here to entertain.
To me and Lu Ming, it meant that Miao Miao was still insisting on my staying at Luming Company and wanted Lu Ming to keep me around.
Having spent so much time with Miao Miao, I could dissect the layers of meaning in her words like a skilled butcher. Yet when Wang Xu mentioned Miao Miao's words, I found myself wavering between belief and disbelief.
Not wanting to spoil the mood in front of everyone, I took a seat at Lu Ming's position and began to sort through the cards.
I rarely played Mahjong and was very slow at it. With so many strangers around and Lu Ming sitting next to me, I felt even more nervous. A few careless mistakes cost me quite a bit of chips.
"Not bad, not bad! Lu Ge's employee sister is really putting family ties aside for justice! The comrades of our country thank you!" Zheng Cheng chimed in from the side, enjoying the spectacle while the other two players at the table mimicked Zheng Cheng's gestures towards me.
I felt extremely embarrassed. Taking advantage of the moment when no one was paying attention, I turned to give Lu Ming a meaningful glance. He looked back casually and said, "What are you nervous about? Just play."
If this money were mine, I might have been able to play casually. But using Lu Ming's money and losing repeatedly made me anxious; the chips on the table were nearly all gone when Wang Yue spoke up.
"How about Lu Ge lets me play for a bit? I'd like to join in."
Upon hearing this, I looked at Lu Ming with hopeful eyes; I had had enough of this torment. However, Lu Ming remained silent. Wang Yue stood up slightly before sitting back down again, creating a somewhat tense atmosphere.
It seemed that Wang Yue's role in this circle was quite peculiar—most people liked her, but both Miao Miao and Lu Ming treated her coldly. Miao Miao would make snide remarks if she didn't like someone, but did Lu Ming really need to pull me in as a scapegoat?
Wang Yue's frustration seemed directed at me; after our first meeting, we might not see each other again anyway, so I decided to just endure it for now.
It turned out that this wait lasted all night. By the time morning came, we had breakfast together before parting ways. Miao Miao leaned against the passenger seat and fell asleep, her breathing heavy, looking utterly exhausted.
Wang Nan pulled over for a moment, took off his jacket, and draped it over Miao Miao. He then smiled at me and mouthed a question about where I wanted to go. After staying up all night, I wasn't tired at all; instead, I felt quite energetic.
I had just submitted my resignation yesterday, so going to work was out of the question. Going home...
"38 Chongming Road, Yishui Residence."
I mentioned the address, and Wang Nan nodded without suspicion, agreeing to drive me there.
I thought it would be a good opportunity to go home for a visit. My dad was probably at work, but my mom, being a stay-at-home wife, would definitely be at home. I could wait for my dad to come back and tell them both about everything.
Divorce is not a small matter; they should have the right to know before I make my decision.
Dragging it out wasn't a solution either. I decided that it was better to let them prepare in advance.
When Wang Nan parked the car at the entrance of the community, I smiled at him in thanks and took one last look at the sleeping Miao Miao before turning to leave.
