In the end, Shuangshuang ended up in the hospital. The emergency doctor gave Wang Xu several examination orders, and I accompanied Wang Xu to each one. The test results came back, indicating a nasal bone contusion along with a mild concussion and some external injuries. The doctor recommended that it would be best to stay in the hospital for observation.
The nurse was still applying alcohol and medication to Wang Xu, and I planned to settle the various fees first before coming back. Unexpectedly, Wang Xu grabbed my hand tightly. When I turned to look, Wang Xu had a face full of injuries, looking at me with pleading eyes: "Honey, don't go."
The nurse paused for a moment, glancing between me and Wang Xu, her expression meaningful before she continued applying the medication.
Seeing Wang Xu in such a battered state made me feel very uncomfortable and a bit angry: "Who told you to get into a fight? You're not a child anymore."
The driver was still being taken for examination by another nurse; he seemed to be in worse condition than Wang Xu. His family had already been notified, but it was unclear when they would arrive. It seemed like there would be more trouble ahead. To be fair, Wang Xu was partly at fault in this situation; if it escalated to the police station, it would be troublesome.
I was really feeling overwhelmed.
"I was so angry, and I didn't know where to vent my frustration. Please don't blame me," Wang Xu said with a pitiful expression.
"Regardless, I need to go pay the fees first. You figure out the rest."
"Honey, just use my card. Do you have any cash on you? Just swipe it."
Wang Xu reached into his pocket and pulled out his card to hand it to me. His demeanor and actions were very natural, but I hesitated and didn't immediately reach out to take it.
Wang Xu had always managed our finances; he was very good at handling money. Most of our household finances were entrusted to him. I had only some scattered cash on me, but not much. If Wang Xu didn't give me his card, I might genuinely struggle to pay for the medical expenses and later negotiate compensation with the driver's family.
Wang Xu probably hadn't realized yet the sad gap between us. Without him, I truly felt like I had almost nothing left, while Wang Xu still possessed a "family" beyond me—losing one person wouldn't make much difference for him.
"Here, take it." Wang Xu insisted on handing me the card without thinking much.
I took the card and Wang Xu's ID, ran to the outpatient payment area, and paid for the examination fees one after another. I thought I needed the ID for observation in the hospital, but the staff said it wasn't necessary, so I put it away. At that moment, the driver's family members arrived and stopped me from leaving.
The driver's examination report came out, and it was indeed more serious than Wang Xu's. I was worried that this matter would escalate to the police station and affect Wang Xu. He had just mentioned to me that he might be getting a promotion soon, and it would be a shame if he were affected for no reason.
I just wanted to handle this matter simply, so I proposed a settlement and briefly mentioned Wang Xu's promotion. The other party agreed but required us to pay all the medical expenses plus five thousand in compensation.
I didn't want this issue to drag on over money, so I agreed immediately. The other party seemed taken aback by my quick agreement, perhaps regretting not asking for more.
I ignored them and walked directly toward the ATM, withdrew five thousand, handed it to them, and said that this matter was settled. As I was leaving, I even apologized. Little did I know that these people were like insatiable dogs; later that night, they suddenly brought over a dozen men, women, and children to the hospital demanding an explanation.
Wang Xu was still resting. I came out of the ward and faced the anger of a dozen people alone at the entrance of the hospital. They accused me of wrongdoing and demanded fifty thousand; otherwise, they would call the police.
I felt as if I were the one being beaten. They each took turns shouting at me without giving me a chance to breathe. Once they had all finished speaking, I looked at them coldly.
"Are you done? If you're done, go ahead and call the police."
