After I arrived at the hotel, I fell asleep immediately and slept for more than ten hours. I felt mentally and physically exhausted from the stress of the past couple of days. It seemed like I had just closed my eyes when I opened them again. It wasn't until I looked at the alarm clock that I realized how long I had been asleep.
When I woke up and checked my phone, there were eight missed calls, all from Wang Xu. My eyelids felt heavy, and after opening and closing them a few times, I finally got out of bed to wash up.
As I stepped out again, my phone rang once more. With no way to avoid it, I answered. Before I could say anything, Wang Xu started shouting on the other end.
"Zhuang Jun, where have you been? Why haven't you come home? Where are you now? I'm coming to pick you up! Speak up!"
I couldn't help but chuckle silently. As soon as I answered, I couldn't get a word in before Wang Xu rattled off a bunch of things, finally leaving a pause for me to respond.
"I'm staying in a room outside. You should just rest for now." Until I found new evidence, it was best not to confront Wang Xu over trivial matters. I'd wait until everything was confirmed before discussing it.
Wang Xu immediately asked, "What? Where did you get a room? Who are you with?"
"Who am I with? You're asking me who I'm with? Wang Xu, you really have the nerve to ask me that." My tone unconsciously rose a few notches.
Wang Xu's voice suddenly lost some of its strength. "I was just asking casually. I'm worried you might be with Mu Miaomiao. She's too scheming and will only spread rumors. She wants to mess with you, and I'm afraid you'll get hurt, my dear."
Wang Xu's "sincere concern" tugged at the most painful part of my heart. I thought that at least Wang Xu could show some responsibility; after all, he used to be the most outstanding person in my eyes.
"Even if Miao Miao is dirty, how much cleaner can you be? Some things you don't do; no one can force you!"
There was silence for several seconds as Wang Xu didn't say anything further. After a while, the busy tone of the call echoed in my ear as he hung up.
I don't know if it was something I said that hit Wang Xu's soft spot, but at least looking back, the gap between Wang Xu and me didn't just start today; it has a beginning and an end, and it seems to have reached its conclusion.
I felt hungry after sleeping for a while. After hanging up the phone, I prepared to go downstairs to grab something to eat. Little did I know that I would run into Dong Lu during rush hour. All I wanted was to find a place to sit down and eat something, but fate had other plans.
I was still standing in the bustling fast-food restaurant when Dong Lu was on the phone, smiling slightly. When she saw me, she gave me a meaningful look and waved me over. I walked over with some reluctance and overheard her conversation.
"Okay, I understand. Alright, Lu Zong, goodbye."
After hanging up, Dong Lu pointed to the empty seat in front of her. "Sit down, Xiao Jun."
She seemed natural, treating me like an old friend she hadn't seen in a long time. Once I sat down, she got straight to the point and asked, "I heard your resignation report is still under review. You're still an employee of our company, right?"
I wasn't sure why she said that, but I awkwardly nodded and replied with a "yes." Miao Miao had said that my resignation was being kept under wraps, and Zhang Xiao Ai had also returned to her position. My current situation felt more like being on vacation.
"Alright then, at five-thirty, go to New Dawn Primary School and pick someone up for me."
As she spoke, Dong Lu looked down at her phone gallery.
"Who?"
"Lu Zong's daughter."
As soon as she finished speaking, Dong Lu held her phone out in front of me. The photo showed her hugging a little girl.
