At this moment, I have become the most cared for and noticed person at home. My mother-in-law's smile has not left her face; she almost tells everyone, "Our Wang Family has good news, our Wang Family has a descendant."
She shows me an unprecedented level of affection, frequently asking if I am tired or hungry, and whether I want something to eat or drink.
With just a nod or shake of my head, I can decide on something, being treated like a precious pearl—this is my first experience in life.
Wang Xu is also overjoyed. He told me that it feels like a weight has been lifted off his heart. He believes we will continue to be happy together. To have such a significant event happen right at the beginning of the year is truly remarkable.
I remained silent, going along with the various pregnancy preservation behaviors of the relatives, but what I cannot tolerate is their desire to change the gender of the child in my womb.
"This is good; eating this nourishes the body. When I was pregnant with Xiao Yang, I ate a lot of this, and I had a feeling it would be a boy. Sure enough, when the baby was born, it turned out to be a boy!"
"You mustn't overlook this; I've heard that women can influence the child's gender while pregnant. Eating these can stimulate hormones and significantly increase the chances of having a son."
This group of people gathered together was merely discussing how to ensure a son. I sat next to Wang Xu, listening as he explained repeatedly that the child's gender had already been determined at that moment, yet they still believed otherwise.
Having a son is both their blessing and a result of some rules they followed during pregnancy.
Although I felt uncomfortable listening to them, I knew I wasn't here to be a science teacher explaining normal logic. So whatever they said, I just listened—what went in one ear came out the other; I simply absorbed it.
When I found a moment, I called Miao Miao. She didn't answer at that time, but after a while, she called me back to ask how I was doing.
I found a corner and excitedly recounted everything that had happened over the past two days to Miao Miao. Even retelling it made my heart race.
What a terrifying series of events! I still didn't mention my worsening condition or my contact with Gu Xiang because I didn't want her to worry about me.
After listening, Miao Miao was very happy: "That's great! Nothing has changed. You don't know how hard it is for Dr. Li; he treats patients and saves lives, but his son was born with intellectual issues. It took him a lot of effort to find a job in the city, yet he still gets bullied often. Dr. Li's partner stays with him in the city but it doesn't seem to help much."
"Is that so?" So that's how it is. At first glance, Dr. Li doesn't seem like someone who could be tempted by money, but when it comes to children, it's different.
"Yes! We found him a job guarding a warehouse with benefits included and even rented them a two-bedroom apartment nearby so they wouldn't have any worries."
"Miao Miao, you thought of everything, and it really touches me. Thank you so much, without you, I wouldn't know what to do. You must have spent a lot preparing all this."
"No, no, it was nothing. They were short-handed over there, and the warehouse work is easy. I just needed someone capable to go over. The warehouse is in a remote area, and the rent isn't expensive; even renting for a year won't cost much. Don't worry about it; it's fine."
Finally, after explaining everything that happened over the past two days, I asked her about the situation with Wang Nan. Miao Miao sighed lightly, indicating she didn't want to say much: "It's not good. That's all I can say. Although it's about what I expected, facing it in reality still requires some mental preparation."
Since Miao Miao said that, it seemed the situation must be quite bad. She isn't someone who easily complains, so her sighing must mean she has endured some grievances.
At this point, I didn't know how to comfort her. I wanted to tell her that she has always been excellent and deserves anyone, including Wang Nan. It is a very wrong idea for Wang Nan's parents not to understand this or even look down on her.
But what I wanted to say, Miao Miao probably already knows. Even if I said it a thousand times, it wouldn't change the hurt inflicted by Wang Nan's parents on Miao Miao. After all, they are the parents of the person she loves; how could she bear to demand fair treatment from them?
In love, people often become "weak," but this kind of weakness isn't necessarily a bad thing. After all, trying to reason with someone you love is often unreasonable.
"Don't worry; actually, I don't have much going on here either. In a couple of days, Wang Nan's parents said they want to go on a trip somewhere, and I'll definitely accompany them. We'll see then."
"Why don't you prepare everything over there in advance? Wang Nan's parents should be able to feel your sincerity."
"Yeah, that's what I'm considering too. But you know how Wang Nan's parents are picky. If I arrange things too well, they'll say I'm wasting money; if I arrange them poorly, they'll say I'm insincere. They always have something to criticize; I just need to think it through again."
"Right, it's very likely that they will find fault no matter how perfectly you arrange things. Just hang in there a bit longer, Miao Miao. You're not like me; you and Wang Nan are such a loving couple. Wang Nan dotes on you; his parents are dissatisfied with your background. But you're such an outstanding person; once they see that side of you, there shouldn't be any problem."
"Haha, let's hope so."
After finishing my call with Miao Miao, I stood in the yard for more than ten minutes and was about to head inside when I happened to pass by the kitchen area. Voices were coming from inside; I had no intention of eavesdropping but caught a hint of my name as I walked by, which forced me to stop.
Standing by the wall at the door, I continued listening to the conversation inside.
"Yeah, I also find it strange; it doesn't seem right."
"Shh! Lower your voice! Didn't I also not notice? It sounds so realistic; who knows if it's true or not?"
"Well, Dr. Li said so. Can Dr. Li be lying? But it's strange, why is there no sign at all?"
"Who knows if it's true or if Wang Min is just making things up to frame us? Didn't we mention before that her daughter-in-law couldn't have children? I knew she must have been harboring resentment at that time. Maybe she just wants to show off to us, but it turns out to be fake."
The people inside were exchanging words, and the voices of Wang Xu and the aunts were consistently loud. Even if they tried to lower their voices, it was still clear enough to hear, and sometimes their excitement made their tones fluctuate.
I was certain they were talking about me and the fabricated child I had made up. I had thought that they would notice some clues, so I prepared myself to ensure that I wouldn't slip up verbally if they asked me.
Little did I know, they were still doubting whether I was really pregnant. Dr. Li had just left, and they immediately began discussing whether it was true or not!
This gamble of mine was more nerve-wracking than I had imagined. The scariest part was if their discussions reached my mother-in-law's ears. Setting aside Dr. Li, if my mother-in-law deliberately took me back for an examination, the consequences would be unimaginable.
As I contemplated various possibilities in my mind, the more I thought about it, the more fearful I became. I could hardly think of any way to turn things around; even the idle gossip I overheard was pushing me to the brink.
In any case, standing here wasn't a solution. Just as I decided to leave, my left foot took a step but accidentally bumped into a pile of firewood nearby. The dry branches rustled loudly, and then I hit a broken porcelain bowl on the ground, which clattered noisily. The people inside immediately stopped talking and fell into an eerie silence.
"Who's there?"
"Go check..."
The conversation inside became slightly alert. I stood still, looking around but couldn't find any shortcut to escape completely or any corner to hide in. I could only stay put as the footsteps grew closer, tightening the panic in my heart.
"Zhuang Jun's Sister, what are you... Oh no, why are you crying?"
One after another, they came out; my aunt was the last one. Upon seeing me, she showed an awkward expression as my tears streamed down.
"Zhuang Jun's Sister, what are you doing? Don't cry! If there's something to say, just say it properly. Why are you crying? Come on, wipe your tears." Aunt Three handed me a handkerchief, but I didn't take it and continued glaring at the people in front of me as they exchanged glances.
It seemed our commotion was quite noticeable; my mother-in-law and Wang Xu also came over from the living room next door. Seeing me crying, Wang Xu's expression changed as she hurried over to my side, looking very anxious: "Why are you crying? What happened? Tell me quickly, dear! What’s going on?"
My mother-in-law asked me the same question.
I pursed my lips in silence, quietly observing the anxious Aunts in front of me. My mother-in-law noticed something was off and sternly addressed them, "What's going on with you? Why is Zhuang Jun standing with you and crying? Are you Aunts bullying the younger generation?"
My aunt immediately chimed in, her voice softening, "No, no, how could that be? Zhuang Jun is Wang Xu's wife; we care for her dearly. It's all a misunderstanding, a misunderstanding."
"What misunderstanding? Aunt, please clarify. Zhuang Jun is pregnant and crying; isn't that harmful to her health? What exactly did you do?" Wang Xu was also displeased; usually respectful towards the Aunts, his tone was quite harsh.
"It's nothing. We don't even know what happened! We were busy in the kitchen, and when we came out, we saw Zhuang Jun like this. It's really not our fault," Aunt Three quickly explained.
"Then Zhuang Jun, tell us what happened. Speak the truth, and I will support you!" My mother-in-law stood protectively in front of me, facing the Aunts.
I raised my hand to wipe away the tears I had deliberately let fall. After a long pause that stirred everyone's curiosity, I finally spoke.
"Mother-in-law, Wang Xu, I don't know if this is a misunderstanding, but Dr. Li is your Village Doctor. This is my third time coming back here; Dr. Li was brought here by you all. I had no prior knowledge and met him for the first time. Can Dr. Li defend me and speak on my behalf? He is a doctor; what would he gain from lying?"
My mother-in-law grew more anxious: "Zhuang Jun, what do you mean? I don't understand."
I let out a cold laugh: "Mother-in-law, these Aunts doubt that I am even pregnant!"
