Wang Xu held a medium-sized transparent white glass bottle in his hand. Although it looked unremarkable, its appearance at this moment was enough to put me on high alert. Moreover, I could see from his furious expression that he was ready for mutual destruction.
In the midst of my panic, I felt an unusual calmness. I suppressed the tremor in my voice and spoke urgently, word by word: "Wang Xu, no matter what you plan to do, you need to listen to me first. Please calm down a bit."
"Calm down? How can you expect me to calm down?!" Wang Xu's face was contorted with rage, his voice sharp and elongated with anger. "Look at what you've done to my mom! Have you seen her now? How can you even ask me to calm down?"
I had long known that everything I had done would cause a huge uproar once Wang Xu found out. He would hate me, be angry with me, and resent me. Of course, he would be as furious as he was now.
It was too late to regret coming here. What I needed to do was to keep my composure. The glass bottle in Wang Xu's hand had become a ticking time bomb; if I panicked, the bomb would undoubtedly be aimed at me.
I tried to slow down my speech and lower my tone, contrasting with Wang Xu's urgency in hopes of calming him down: "Think about it—am I the only one responsible for this? We both failed to maintain our marriage; divorce is the best choice. You're still young, and it's very easy for you to find someone suitable."
Of course, given Wang Xu's current situation, finding a job and then another woman wouldn't be difficult at all. I had witnessed how he acted when he first started dating compared to after marriage; he could successfully attract someone who could be his partner for life. However, once she saw how Wang Xu and his mother behaved, I wondered how long their relationship would last.
Three years again?
"Enough! I'm not here to listen to your excuses! I thought you would at least feel remorse and apologize to my mom. Look at you now! Fine, you're not regretting it, right?!"
Seeing that Wang Xu was genuinely anxious, I quickly raised my hands to stop him: "Okay, calm down. You just want me to apologize, right? Fine, I'll apologize."
At that moment, lowering my head to say a disingenuous apology was merely a tactic to defuse the situation. As I put my hands down, I discreetly took out my phone from my bag and placed it on my thigh, pressing buttons at a speed that Wang Xu couldn't possibly see.
"I heard your mom isn't well right now; I'm really sorry about that. But ultimately, this is a mistake we all contributed to. I've made mistakes on my end too, so I'll apologize first."
"Your mom?! You changed your tune so quickly?" Wang Xu said indignantly.
I sighed helplessly: "Alright, mother-in-law. I'm afraid you might mind; call her whatever you want."
The frustrating part was that while I was trying to observe Wang Xu's expression, manipulating the number keys on my phone was incredibly difficult. I didn't even know if I had found a workable number yet. Lowering my head created a huge vulnerability that could let Wang Xu see what I was doing; I could only blindly fumble around trying to dial out.
"You need to call my mom right now and say something nice to her so she'll feel better! Hurry up!"
Wang Xu's suggestion made me hesitate. First of all, my phone had already dialed some random number due to my nervousness. Secondly, I strongly resisted what Wang Xu wanted me to do—apologizing over the phone? It felt utterly absurd.
At this moment, the problem was already clear; it was a huge mistake for me to come here. Wang Xu's expression was stern, as if he wanted to see right through me: "Are you going to call or not? You’re not going to call, right?!"
"Fine, I’ll call, but I need to use your phone."
"What?"
"My phone is dead; I need to use yours."
Wang Xu looked at me suspiciously, scanning me up and down. I was prepared; if he really wanted to check my phone, I would just turn it off. He couldn't possibly verify anything with my phone. Fortunately, he didn't even hint at wanting to check my phone and simply tossed his own phone over to me.
"Call!"
I caught his phone with one hand. After opening the contacts, the sight that met my eyes was ridiculous. There was a string of numbers in the middle; although there were no names saved, I instantly recognized whose number it was.
Deng Xiaomei.
How absurd! At this moment, Deng Xiaomei was still in contact with Wang Xu. Thinking about it differently, I really couldn't tell if this whole situation was orchestrated by Deng Xiaomei to help Wang Xu. But Deng Xiaomei was clearly still in Qin Yi's hands; did she really dare to do something like this right under Qin Yi's nose?
"Hurry up and call! What are you hesitating for?"
Wang Xu probably didn't realize that I could remember Deng Xiaomei's number and thought I was stalling. I nodded lightly and pressed the call button for my mother-in-law's number. The two beeps echoed in my ears, and my heart sank deeper with each sound, hoping that the other end would never pick up.
To be honest, even if I took a thousand steps back, if it weren't for the life-threatening situation posed by what Wang Xu had, I would never have made this call. Apologize? Apologize to someone who hurt me? Apologize to someone who never cared about my feelings?
Unless I'm truly insane.
Despite my reluctance, the call was answered on the other end. With a gentle "Hello," I swallowed my disgust and looked up at Wang Xu, forcing myself to say something.
"Mother-in-law."
Upon hearing me say that, there was a brief hesitation of one or two seconds before her voice turned cold: "You? Why are you calling? I'm not your mother-in-law; don't call me that!"
I had known this would be the outcome for a long time, and I really wanted to roll my eyes and argue with her. Did she think I wanted to shout?
"Are you okay? How has your health been lately?"
I didn't genuinely care about my mother-in-law; I was just stalling for time. I wondered if the person on the other end of the line had heard our conversation. Fortunately, all the contacts in my phone were familiar faces, so at least they would understand what was going on. I had no idea if they would come looking for me.
"Hmph, thanks to you, I'm still alive and haven't been driven to death by anger. Are you just waiting to see that, Zhuang Jun? How dare you lie to me about having a grandson? Don't you fear retribution?!"
I knew my mother-in-law was harboring resentment over this matter. Speaking of retribution, shouldn't Wang Xu and my mother-in-law be more afraid than I am? Could they really hide all their wrongdoings while I faced consequences for just one lie?
"This is my fault; I've upset you. I heard you've been unwell lately, so I called to check on you. Please take care of yourself, don't get too angry or overwork yourself. It must be difficult managing everything for two people, so please be cautious."
When I was managing three people alone, no one ever genuinely considered my feelings. Now that my mother-in-law was unwell, she started blaming me. It was truly ridiculous.
"Hmph, are you here to curse me?" my mother-in-law said sharply.
"Of course not. I only thought to call after hearing Wang Xu mention it. Anyway, it seems like it's time for you to rest; I won't disturb you any longer."
After hanging up, I casually tossed the phone back to Wang Xu. His expression relaxed a bit, and I hesitated before asking him, "Can I go to the bathroom?"
Wang Xu sneered, "Zhuang Jun, don't even think about leaving today."
My heart sank at his expression; he genuinely seemed intent on causing me trouble today. If I had prepared earlier, I wouldn't feel so panicked now. After talking for so long on the phone, if the person on the other end could find their way here, there might still be a chance for me to escape. But now it seemed…
"Wang Xu, I've made the call as you asked and apologized as well. What else are you dissatisfied with? Are you planning to take revenge on me? Given your mother's poor health, have you considered that your actions now will have consequences? What will happen to your mother then?"
Targeting Wang Xu's weak spot made him hesitate for a moment as he seemed to seriously contemplate my words. I understood that the only way to move him was to approach it from his mother's perspective.
It was truly heartbreaking; it had always been this way—never considering me while constantly thinking of his mother. Such a man might be seen as filial, but for a partner, it was incredibly disheartening.
"What's wrong? Are you scared?" Wang Xu mocked me coldly.
"Of course I'm scared. I've already been through so much, yet I still have to face danger. Why shouldn't I be afraid? You say you love me, but everything you do hurts me. Don't you realize that? You've always been like this, acting in the name of love without ever considering me."
"Stop pretending to be so kind. If you had really thought about me, about my mother, would things have turned out like this? I can hardly believe you would use a lie about a child to deceive me. Do you understand how heartbroken I felt when I discovered the truth?!"
"Who told you, Deng Xiaomei?"
Wang Xu's lips twitched slightly; it seemed she was indeed the one. I sneered inwardly. Fine, don't let me leave here alive. Otherwise, if Deng Xiaomei falls into my hands, I'll make sure she pays dearly.
Even at the end, she's still trying to trip me up. What else could it be but a declaration of war?
My standoff with Wang Xu remained tense with no breakthroughs. I realized there was no way for me to leave this place. Just as I was contemplating whether to call someone else for help, Wang Xu's gaze suddenly dropped, and he coldly asked me,
"What are your hands doing?"
I hurriedly tried to press the phone off, but the sweat in my palms caused it to slip from my grip and fall to the ground. I bent down to pick it up, but Wang Xu was quicker than me. As he picked up the phone and examined the screen closely, his expression grew increasingly terrifying, while my hopes gradually extinguished.
"Well, Zhuang Jun, I really underestimated Aquinas before; you truly are such a despicable woman!"
It seemed that Wang Xu had already caught on to my little maneuver, and since the person I contacted hadn't arrived yet, Wang Xu's anger had reached its peak.
