I am three years old.
My mom is holding my hand, standing at the entrance of a magnificent hotel.
She bends down to pick me up and gently says, "Ling'er, remember to be polite when you see Dad later, okay?"
I nod, confused.
She teaches me to say, "You should call him Dad, not Uncle CEO."
"You need to tell Dad that you miss him and that you want to be with him and your sister forever."
"Remember, we are a family, and we can't let Dad get engaged to another woman."
"Do you understand?"
I nod, feeling ecstatic inside.
I know that if they successfully get engaged, I won't have to rely on her care anymore.
She takes my hand and storms into the engagement venue.
She loudly declares, "I object!"
"I have been with you for so many years with our daughter, and yet you are getting engaged to another woman!"
"Chen Donglai, you can't treat me like this!"
"Myself and Ling'er are the only family you have!"
Chen Donglai frowns slightly, looking disgusted: "Security, take this crazy woman away."
Wang Shiyu raises her hand to stop the security guard.
With a half-smile, she looks at Lu Mengmeng: "What did you say? You've been with Donglai for many years with your daughter?"
Chen Donglai quickly explains: "Shiyu, don't listen to her nonsense; you know how I feel about you."
"I only have you in my heart."
Lu Mengmeng sets me down and gently strokes my head: "Ling'er, remember what Mommy just taught you."
"Go on, drive that bad woman away."
"She is the culprit who took your dad away and is preventing our family from reuniting."
I nod and step forward slowly between them.
In front of everyone, I suddenly kneel down.
I lift my face, tears rolling down: "Please don't hit me and throw me back to Stepmother."
"I don't want Stepmother; I also don't want to be separated from my sister."
"If you must get engaged, just send me to an orphanage."
"I'm not afraid of hardship or being bullied; I just want Dad..."
As I was halfway through my words, my body swayed, and I fainted. I fell against their expensive clothes, exposing a section of my arm. It was covered in bruises, blue and purple.
"Oh my God!"
"How could this child be beaten like this?"
"Didn't her mother say she was with her dad? Is her dad just watching his daughter being abused?"
"What kind of family is this?"
When I was two years old, I was so hungry that I was skin and bones. A kind neighbor fed me a spoonful of rice porridge. My biological mother demanded it back and threw it on the ground. She sternly warned me, "You can't accept charity from others, do you understand?" She had never given me anything to eat. When I was born, I didn't even have a drop of milk. She told me that I ruined her youth and destroyed her life. If it weren't for me, she would have long returned home in glory.
She used a small needle to poke me, venting all her pent-up frustration and dissatisfaction onto me. She said, "If it weren't for you, I would have had no face to go home."
"It's all your fault, you little jinx!"
"You better not cry, or I'll smother you!"
Though she threatened to smother me, she never actually laid a hand on me because I was her only tool to climb up to the powerful man. She told me countless times how she met him and how much he once loved her. It was that woman who took away her lover, forcing him to dismiss her. She claimed she was there to save him. By having his child, he would surely return to her side.
Her feelings about my birth were both jealousy and satisfaction because I was the unbreakable bond between her and the powerful man. Love and hate intertwined within her. She treated me as her possession and hurt me mercilessly.
I am Chen Ling'er.
Two years old.
But I already know that this woman is crazy.
She will kill me.
I must escape.
Escape to someone who can protect me.
Right in front of me is the best opportunity.
In front of everyone, I kneel down, tears streaming down my face.
"Please, don't hit me and throw me back to Stepmother."
"I don't want Stepmother, and I don't want to be separated from my sister."
"If you have to get engaged, just send me to the orphanage."
"I'm not afraid of hardship, nor am I afraid of being bullied; I just want Dad..."
Halfway through my plea, my body swayed, and I fainted.
I leaned against their expensive clothes, exposing a section of my arm.
It was covered in bruises and scars.
"Oh my God!"
"How could this child be beaten like this?"
"Didn't her mother say she was with her dad? Is her dad really just watching his daughter being abused?"
"What kind of family is this?"
With the last bit of strength I had, I grabbed the hand of a kind-looking grandmother in the front row, adorned with jewels.
Desperately, repeatedly, I bowed my head.
Chen Donglai would definitely not help me.
But perhaps this grandmother's words could change my fate.
This is my only chance to escape.
