Chapter Nine: The Bar Incident
"Zhang Qiu?" Xu Qing Chu thought for a moment and replied, "I'm not sure. I just transferred to teach this class."
Director Zhao interjected, "Yes, yes, Teacher Chu just transferred here. The previous language teacher went home."
The police officer frowned slightly and turned to the students, asking, "Which one of you is Zhang Qiu?"
Zhang Qiu stared at the police officer in front of him, his gaze shifting between several people. He was unsure why the police were looking for him. Was it because his father had been injured? But his uncle said that the higher-ups meant to negotiate compensation; why would the police be looking for him? Could it be... were they here to catch the culprit? With that thought, Zhang Qiu stood up excitedly and said, "That's me."
As soon as Zhang Qiu spoke, several officers approached him from both sides, and he stepped out from his seat. The questioning officer said to Zhang Qiu, "My name is Ma Zhen, and I am the captain of the second team at Beilan Police Station. You are suspected of spreading rumors and defaming government agencies. Please come with us."
Zhang Qiu's mind raced; spreading rumors and defaming government agencies—what was going on! Suddenly, he remembered the post he had made and the subsequent deletion of it. A chill ran down his spine.
Wait a minute, the police were spreading rumors themselves; this couldn't be right. His post was all based on facts. Zhang Qiu hurriedly defended himself, "Officer, can I ask if this is about the post in the bar?"
Ma Zhen looked at Zhang Qiu and nodded.
Zhang Qiu continued, "Officer, I did not spread any rumors. Everything I wrote in that post was true."
"You'll come back to the station with us; the law will give you justice," Ma Zhen said expressionlessly as he looked at Zhang Qiu. After all, which person being arrested didn’t try to defend themselves?
Seeing how things were unfolding, Zhang Qiu realized that he really had to go with them. At this point, he could only take it step by step. However, Zhang Qiu was not going to leave his fate entirely in their hands; he requested, "Officer, can I make a phone call to my family before we go? My mom will worry if she doesn't see me by noon."
Ma Zhen thought for a moment and took out his phone, handing it to Zhang Qiu. He didn't want to make things difficult for a student.
Zhang Qiu took the phone and dialed his mother's number. On the other end, He Mei hesitated and asked, "Who is this?"
"Mom, it's me," Zhang Qiu said in a very low voice.
"Son? What's wrong? Aren't you in class?" He Mei asked.
"Mom, listen to me. The police from the station are here to take me away because I spread rumors. I reported the collusion between the Relocation Office and Social Delinquents last night... Mom, are you still there?"
"Alright, alright, that's enough. Just say a couple of sentences," an impatient officer urged.
"Mom, I can only tell you this. Take care of yourself and Dad," Qiu Wan handed the phone back to Ma Zhen.
Ma Zhen looked at Zhang Qiu for a moment, his expression somewhat complicated. "Let's go. This isn't a big deal; just be honest, it's better for all of us."
Zhang Qiu nodded and obediently followed Ma Zhen. Two police officers flanked him on either side. When Zhang Qiu passed by Xu Qing Chu, he stopped and forced a smile that looked worse than crying. "Teacher, I'm afraid I'll need to take a few days off."
Xu Qing Chu looked at Zhang Qiu and said, "I will inform the homeroom teacher for you. We welcome you back soon."
Zhang Qiu nodded and left with Ma Zhen.
The sudden arrival of the police shocked everyone in the senior class Eighteen. Especially when Zhang Qiu was taken away, everyone—including the top students who usually kept their heads down—stared intently at him, afraid of missing something. The moment Zhang Qiu disappeared at the door, Jiang Xue felt a jolt in her heart, and for a long time afterward, her emotions remained in a state of confusion.
In the hospital, Zhang Zhi Hua looked at He Mei, who was standing there in a daze after hanging up the phone. He shook her arm and asked, "What's wrong? Why do you look like that after a phone call? Who called?"
He Mei turned her head, her eyes vacant and somewhat hollow as she looked at Zhang Zhi Hua, stammering, "It's my... my son. He was taken away by the police!"
"What? What happened?" Zhang Zhi Hua exclaimed, sitting up excitedly from the hospital bed. In his haste, he inadvertently pulled at his wound, causing him to gasp in pain.
"He said on the phone that he reported the Relocation Office colluding with social delinquents and injuring you. Now the police are coming to arrest him! What are we going to do?" He Mei looked at Zhang Zhi Hua with urgency. At that moment, her mind was completely in chaos, and she desperately needed Zhang Zhi Hua to come up with a plan.
Zhang Zhi Hua furrowed his brow and sighed. His son had ultimately failed to hold back. After pondering for a moment, he slapped the bed and said, "Call his uncle. He must have a way to handle this."
"Right, right! I was so flustered that I almost forgot. I'll call my brother right now." With that, He Mei took out her phone and dialed the number of Zhang Qiu's uncle, He Jun.
