Leo took a deep breath, trying to calm his nervous and excited emotions. He stared at the judge, his voice strong and resonant, but with a hint of emotional excitement.
"Your Honor, I did indeed confront and attack Major Jack on Four Minnow Star. But please understand, my actions were a response born out of desperation and anger," Leo paused briefly, collecting his thoughts.
"In that operation, Major Jack not only neglected his duties, but also displayed extreme carelessness. His command errors directly led to the deaths of several soldiers, including a military officer who was a close friend of mine," Leo's voice began to tremble, showing his inner pain and struggle.
"I admit that I acted insubordinately in a moment of emotional distress. But I want to emphasize that I did so because I couldn't bear to see my comrades sacrifice under meaningless command. My actions were driven by my support for my comrades and justice, not by personal grievances or arrogance," Leo's gaze was firm and affectionate, his words filled with mourning for his comrades and a yearning for justice.
The judges listened to Leo's defense with various expressions, exchanging glances with each other. The entire courtroom was immersed in a tense and solemn atmosphere. Leo stood there, waiting for the judges' verdict, his emotions complex and heavy, filled with uncertainty and worry about the future.
In the dim light of the courtroom, the metal arm of the robot stenographer moved rapidly in the air, its fingertips emitting a cold mechanical tapping sound, like a repeated accusation, meticulously recording Leo's testimony. The eyes of the white-haired judge sharply focused on Leo, his voice echoing with unquestionable authority as if from ancient times: "Defendant, do you admit to the charge of insubordination and initiating an attack on a superior officer outside of combat?"
Leo took a deep breath, trying to stay calm in the oppressive courtroom. He firmly responded, "Yes, Your Honor. But everything I did was because—" Before he could finish his sentence, he was interrupted by the black judge next to him.
The black judge's movements suddenly became sharp as he vigorously struck the gavel, producing a loud and piercing sound, as if each strike was condemning Leo's actions. His voice was cold and merciless: "Silence! In this court, only the court can ask questions. The defendant has no right to make any unnecessary remarks."
The atmosphere in the entire courtroom became extremely oppressive, filled with an invisible weight that made it feel suffocating. Leo felt as if he were being tightly gripped by an unseen giant hand, his heart racing, feeling an unprecedented sense of powerlessness and despair.
The judges on their towering benches showed no change in expression, their eyes cold and indifferent, as if judging a meaningless existence. Leo, in the defendant's box, felt like a meteor abandoned in the universe, insignificant and powerless to resist.
The judges exchanged glances as they presided over the trial, while Leo could only stand helplessly in the defendant's box, waiting for his fate to be decided. Every second of waiting felt like a torturous eternity, as he knew that his future hung in the balance.
In the stifling atmosphere of the courtroom, the female judge on the far right sharply questioned, her voice piercing and severe: "Second Lieutenant, you claim that Major Jack neglected his duties and behaved improperly. Do you have any specific evidence or witnesses to support your accusations?"
Leo's heart surged with a hint of anger, but he suppressed the emotion and tried to answer calmly, "Regarding Major Jack's behavior, I believe many soldiers at Four Minnow Star can testify. His actions on the battlefield and his handling of the war should have enough witnesses to prove. As for the witnesses, I have never received any notification, nor had the opportunity to search for or present a list of witnesses. I must ask, in this situation, how can I provide witnesses? Does this comply with the due process of the court?"
The female judge's eyes were cold and stern as she sharply stared at Leo, saying in an unchallengeable tone, "Second Lieutenant, your baseless accusations will only worsen your situation. You claim to have witnessed Major Jack's dereliction of duty and misconduct at Four Minnow Star, yet you seem to have no evidence or witnesses to support your claims. Are you speaking nonsense in the courtroom?"
Leo felt a hint of anger and helplessness welling up inside him, but he knew that arguing back in this situation would only be more disadvantageous. "All the soldiers present can testify to Major Jack's behavior..." Leo began to respond.
However, the female judge mercilessly cut him off, saying, "This is a courtroom, not a place for your emotional outbursts. Without evidence, your words are worthless. It seems you've forgotten that you are the defendant here, not the prosecutor. If you cannot provide concrete evidence, then your accusations will be considered baseless. The court needs facts, not your subjective judgment."
Leo's heart sank as he realized clearly that in this situation, his words carried almost no weight. The female judge's attitude indicated the court's unfavorable position towards him, and his resistance would only lead to deeper despair. He angrily lowered his head, filled with helplessness and despair.
The deep and serious voice of the black judge stared directly at Leo as he asked, word by word, "Second Lieutenant Leo, now please explain one thing. In the recent major cleanup operation, the Bravo Team you led, especially the wolf pack and Iron Fist, suffered extremely heavy losses. Thirty-one soldiers from two platoons, with only two survivors. Doesn't this severe loss indicate a failure on your part as a leader? How do you explain how your leadership failure led to this result?"
Leo felt a wave of suffocation. He knew he had to answer the question, but remembering the faces of those soldiers, his heart felt like it was being tightly gripped. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself.
