Mom smiled awkwardly, "I couldn't reach you at the time, so I didn't notify you."
"Who is the guy?" I asked.
Dong Chen's face flushed lightly, shy yet sweet: "Sister, you know him, it's Fang Bo."
"Oh."
I responded lightly.
Dong Chen looked at me suspiciously: "Sister, aren't you happy?"
I smiled and said, "I'm happy for you, sis. Congratulations."
Dong Chen sighed in relief, smiling as if a burden had been lifted.
I glanced around curiously and asked, "Where's my brother?"
Just then, Dong Hui returned.
He had bought the necklace that Dong Chen wanted.
Dong Chen was very happy and stood on her tiptoes to kiss Dong Hui on the cheek: "Thank you, brother."
Dong Hui beamed, clearly pleased.
"I also ran into Fang Bo; he said he would find a time to take you to try on engagement dresses."
Dong Chen lowered her head shyly: "I haven't decided yet whether I want to marry him."
Dong Hui playfully pinched her cheek: "You're already engaged and still not marrying? Are you having second thoughts?"
Dong Chen blushed and remained silent.
Only then did Dong Hui notice me: "Dong Lan, you're back?"
I smiled slightly: "Brother, long time no see."
Dong Hui chuckled: "When did you come back?"
"This afternoon."
"Why didn't you let me know in advance? I would have picked you up."
"You all are very busy; I didn't want to disturb you."
Dong Hui smiled awkwardly and reached out to ruffle my hair. "It's been a few years, you've grown up and become more understanding."
I lowered my gaze to hide the coldness in my eyes. Yes, I have grown up, and I've also given up. I will no longer be sad or hurt by your neglect and indifference.
Dad cleared his throat. "Since Dong Hui is back, let's eat."
"Right, I'm hungry," Dong Hui said as he put his arm around my shoulders and led me to the dining room.
Dong Chen kept staring at us with a complicated expression.
At the dining table, the the Dong Family worked in perfect harmony, collectively ignoring me while continuously congratulating Dong Chen and Fang Bo on their engagement.
I ate slowly, waiting for them to finish their congratulations. Once they were done, I set down my utensils and said, "I need to go to the police station tomorrow."
"The police station?" They all turned to look at me in unison.
I explained, "To reissue some documents."
They visibly relaxed. I smirked coldly and added, "Don't worry, I won't be attending the engagement ceremony."
Their expressions turned awkward, as if I had touched on a sensitive topic.
I stood up. "I'm full; you all can take your time eating."
Dong Chen looked aggrieved and sad. "Sister, are you still upset with us?"
Mom comforted her gently. "Chen Chen, don't overthink it; Dong Lan doesn't mean it that way."
Dad chimed in, "That's right; Dong Lan just has things to take care of."
Dong Hui wiped away Dong Chen's tears. "Sister understands us best; how could she blame us?"
I looked at them coldly, finding it amusing.
As I left the dining table, the family of four finally sighed in relief and began to comfort Dong Chen.
Dong Hui knocked on the door: "Dong Lan, may I come in?"
I put down my phone: "Sure."
Dong Hui walked in with a complicated expression: "Your room... Chen Chen bought too many things, and there's no place to put them, so we temporarily placed them in your room."
I smiled slightly: "It's fine, I don't mind."
Dong Hui hesitated to speak.
I raised an eyebrow: "Brother, do you have something else to say?"
Dong Hui sighed: "I'll have the maid tidy up your room tomorrow; you should stay a few more days."
"No need, I'll be leaving in a few days."
"You're leaving?" Dong Hui's face turned grim. "Dong Lan, do you think this is a hotel? You come and go as you please; what do you take this place for?"
What does that mean? If he doesn't want me to leave, he should just say so instead of being so sarcastic.
I smiled lightly: "Brother, if you don't want me to leave, just say it directly."
Dong Hui was taken aback, stiffening his neck and stubbornly saying, "Who doesn't want you to leave?"
I chuckled softly: "Then I'll leave right now."
