Chapter Five: Reeds and Rushes
As Zhou Ziyan jumped into the dance floor, the party officially kicked off.
The lights in the hall had been switched to a neon mode by someone, casting waves of light that surged towards Junxi with the rhythm of the music, making it feel as if they were in a bar.
Xue Waiwai loved this kind of atmosphere, but finding her among the lively crowd was increasingly difficult. Junxi sat alone, occasionally engaging in brief conversations with others, but the topic always circled back to Zhou Ziyan. These people were subtly probing to find out how far she and Zhou Ziyan had progressed.
After repeating the phrase "We’re just friends" more than a dozen times, people began to think she was being ungrateful. Indeed, even Junxi herself found that line bland and uninteresting.
She scooped a bite of cake into her mouth, the sweetness overwhelming her taste buds. As she carefully swallowed, she silently cursed Zhou Ziyan for her poor taste.
A text message pinged on her phone. She glanced at it; it was from her tutor's nanny, but the tone of the sender immediately revealed who had stolen the phone.
That little brat, Shen Minya.
"Sister, when are you coming to see me again? I miss you so much!"
She replied, "I'll come over when I have time and bring you your favorite sweet potatoes, okay?"
Before she could receive a response, the loud music in the dance floor suddenly changed its tune. The writhing bodies slowed their movements, trying to catch their breath and shift the rhythm.
"Junxi!" Many voices called her name, not familiar but filled with a sense of familiarity.
She looked up and saw Zhou Ziyan standing in the center of the crowd, waving at her.
"Come here!"
Under normal circumstances, she would have ignored him. But today he was the birthday star, and the birthday star deserved respect; she couldn't refuse.
Junxi stood up and walked toward Zhou Ziyan. As she stepped down from the platform, she entered their lively dance floor. The eyes that turned to her sparkled under the neon lights, carrying a hint of encouragement. It felt as if she was about to do something remarkable.
Zhou Ziyan came over and took her hand. "Miss Wen Junxi, will you dance with me?"
His words were phrased as a question but sounded more like a statement.
He wasn't really asking for her opinion.
The people around them cheered and urged her on. Junxi was not one to shy away from such moments, and besides, it was too late to back out now.
She nodded.
The beautiful melody filled her ears, and she knew that this kind of music called for only one type of dance: the Waltz.
Zhou Ziyan was clearly prepared; he had already assumed the position, waiting for her to extend her hand to join him.
Junxi had learned the Waltz. At that time, her schedule was filled with many things she had to study, most of which she resisted. Only the Waltz was something she willingly embraced.
She loved the complex yet relaxed and natural steps of the dance. Although the learning process was arduous, the results were quite rewarding. With this hobby, she won trophy after trophy, earning praise from everyone...
Yet, despite her fondness for it, she let it slip away.
Junxi held Zhou Ziyan's hand, slowly following the melody. The people in the dance floor stepped aside, giving them space.
He wore a T-shirt and jeans, and she wasn't exactly dressed formally either; without heels on her sneakers, she stood on her toes, moving step by step in a gentle rise and fall... repeating, spinning...
Zhou Ziyan wasn't a professional; he even seemed to be somewhat unprepared, but he was still a good partner. Next to him, Junxi felt at ease to lean and sway her body while skillfully guiding him...
"Wen Junxi, you have no idea how beautiful you are like this," Zhou Ziyan said with a smirk, stealing a moment to wrap his arm around her waist at the end, delivering what should have been a gentle compliment in a teasing tone.
Junxi glanced back, still caught in Zhou Ziyan's embrace, her gaze landing on that tall figure.
