Chapter Nineteen: Reeds and Rushes
The waiter entered to serve the last dish, the Tai Chi soup.
Zhou Xuanyu took care of Junxi, who had difficulty using her hands, and naturally stood up to scoop some into her bowl. As she reached out to take it, her fingertips accidentally brushed against his warm skin. In just a couple of seconds, her heart felt as if it had been electrified, tingling all over.
"Thank you," she said softly.
Zhou Xuanyu nodded and sat back down.
His phone buzzed with a text notification, but he didn’t check it. Junxi bit her lip, pretending she hadn’t seen the name "Infant Water Spirit."
The screen gradually brightened, like a woman’s heart slowly dimming.
With Zhou Ziyan present, the atmosphere at the table never fell flat.
He was like a high-energy perpetual motion machine, making it his mission to tease Junxi. Even though she tried to maintain a composed demeanor, he pushed her to reveal her true self, almost provoking her to roll up her sleeves and fight back.
Zhou Xuanyu was mostly silent; when he did speak, it was usually to support Junxi. If not for her lingering worries, the meal would have been quite harmonious.
As the dinner drew to a close, Junxi glanced at the time. She hadn’t realized how late it had gotten until that moment.
“Oh no!”
“What’s wrong? Did a comet crash into the Earth? Or did Godzilla climb through your window?” Zhou Ziyan quipped, unable to hold back his sarcasm.
“I’m really going to be late!”
"Don't worry, the president is right here, isn't he? What's the big deal about being late? No one dares to say anything if you skip work," Zhou Ziyan said casually, glancing at Zhou Xuanyu.
Zhou Xuanyu shot a reassuring look at Junxi. "If we head back now, we should make it in time."
As he spoke, he picked up his coat and stood up, signaling the waiter to come in for the bill.
Zhou Ziyan followed suit, reminding him that he was the one treating this time. Zhou Xuanyu didn’t argue with him.
The three of them entered and exited the private room together. While waiting for the elevator, Zhou Ziyan swung his legs and suddenly said, "With your uncle looking out for you, I can relax."
The silver elevator doors reflected Junxi's graceful figure, but Zhou Ziyan's gaze was fixed on her image in the mirror.
Jun Xi Bai shot him a glance. "Why does it sound like you're making a deathbed confession?"
"Hey!" Zhou Ziyan gasped dramatically and playfully flicked Junxi's forehead. "Can you say something nice about me for once?"
Junxi took a step back and bumped into Zhou Xuanyu, who instinctively wrapped an arm around her waist to steady her.
Just then, the elevator doors opened, and Junxi darted inside as if she had been shocked.
The two men followed closely behind her.
"The F1 Championship is about to start; I’ll be in Belgium for a while," Zhou Ziyan continued.
He was going to Belgium as a race car driver to participate in the latest F1 Championship, a fact that had spread like wildfire at Ziying University long ago.
This statement was directed at Zhou Xuanyu.
Zhou Xuanyu nodded, as if he had already known about Zhou Ziyan's plans, showing no signs of surprise. His calm demeanor made Zhou Ziyan, who had initially felt justified, suddenly feel a bit guilty.
"Uncle..."
"I know I can't stop you."
"I will win."
Zhou Ziyan seemed determined, and her serious profile struck Junxi as somewhat unfamiliar. However, she had to admit that when Zhou Ziyan was serious, she looked quite impressive.
"Winning or losing is secondary; just make sure to stay safe," Zhou Xuanyu paused for a moment. "Before you go, visit your father."
The elevator suddenly fell into a dreadful silence. Zhou Ziyan's cold expression lowered the pressure in the cabin, making Junxi feel a bit breathless.
She watched the red numbers rapidly descending and silently prayed for the doors to open quickly.
When the elevator doors finally opened, she stepped out and heard Zhou Ziyan say, "It's fine, Uncle. Just let him know for me."
