Chapter 31: The White Dew Has Yet to Fade
“Junxi!”
A familiar voice called from behind. Junxi turned around, and the glass door to the balcony had been completely opened. Soft light spilled into the hall, and Zhou Xuanyu stood at the center of that glow.
"Isn't this Mr. Zhou?"
Shen Yunchong stood up before Junxi, catching her attention with his meaningful whisper.
Zhou Xuanyu nodded slightly at Shen Yunchong from a distance, then shifted his gaze and lowered his voice as he called out to her again.
"What brings you here?"
"Were you looking for me?"
"I've been looking for a long time."
His gentleness was like bait, like a spell, like a remedy; even though she had felt utterly lost just moments ago, her inner turmoil dissipated in an instant.
Junxi waved at Shen Yunchong, said a quick goodbye, and immediately turned to rush toward Zhou Xuanyu.
Her long hair flowed behind her, and her skirt fluttered; even just her silhouette was breathtaking. Shen Yunchong watched her and suddenly recalled scenes from the movie "Gone with the Wind."
A woman who could take such eager steps was likely running toward the man she loved.
Could it be that Wen Junxi had feelings for Zhou Xuanyu...? Shen Yunchong stroked his chin, inhaling gently. The air still held the sweet fragrance she had left behind. His daughter Minya's voice echoed in his ears: "Daddy, can Sister Junxi be my mommy?"
It seemed... that would not be possible.
Junxi was running a bit too fast, and although Zhou Xuanyu stood there steadily, he looked like a mere illusion from every angle.
She was afraid, afraid that he would vanish with the wind at any moment.
In her haste, she didn’t pay attention to the steps beneath her. After one of her high heels missed the step, her entire body lost its balance…
“Watch out!”
“Watch out!”
Two men shouted simultaneously and rushed toward her.
Zhou Xuanyu reached her first, catching Junxi in his arms.
“Are you okay?” He furrowed his brow.
“I’m fine, I’m fine.”
Junxi didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, but just as she tried to appear nonchalant, a sharp pain made her gasp involuntarily.
Zhou Xuanyu held her steady with one arm while quickly pulling over a rattan chair with the other.
“Sit down, let me take a look.”
As he spoke, he pressed her into the chair and knelt on one knee in front of her.
Time seemed to freeze at that moment; all she could see was his clean-cut hair.
She longed to bravely reach out and touch his distinctly short hair, even if it pricked her fingers—she would willingly endure it.
“Why were you running so fast?”
He scolded her lightly, his tone laced with an unrecognized affection, and she could hear it.
"Mm." She responded vaguely, a secret smile creeping onto her lips.
She didn’t tell him that she didn’t want him to wait. She had already made him search for a long time; how could she make him wait any longer?
Zhou Xuanyu directly took off her high heels. Before his hand could grasp her ankle, she was already nervously gripping the armrest of the chair.
"Should we go to the hospital for an X-ray?"
Shen Yunchong leaned in closer.
Zhou Xuanyu held her delicate foot, as white as jade, and gently rotated it a few times. Junxi winced and let out soft sounds of discomfort.
"No need to go to the hospital; it’s not a bone injury."
"How do you know?"
"She’s afraid of pain. If it were a bone injury, she wouldn’t just be making those sounds."
Shen Yunchong was taken aback. "Just like that?"
Zhou Xuanyu effortlessly picked Junxi up in a horizontal position and said lightly, "Yes, just like that."
Shen Yunchong adjusted his stance, a slight smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
The Zhou Xuanyu in front of him was quite different from the one he had heard about... was he jealous?
The ball in the front hall had already begun, with many people dancing closely in the ballroom.
Zhou Xuanyu held her close and walked out without a care for anyone around them.
Junxi clung to his neck, tilting her head to look at his indifferent jawline.
"Why don't you tell Mr. Shen that you studied medicine while in the army?"
"Are you close with Shen Yunchong?" Zhou Xuanyu suddenly asked.
Junxi thought for a moment. She had been a tutor for Minya for two years, but her understanding of Shen Yunchong was limited to snippets from Minya and the Shen family's servants.
Minya had mentioned that her father was very busy and rarely had time to spend with her. The servants of the Shen family spoke of their master with pride, saying, "Our Mr. Shen is doing quite well in business."
How well exactly, Junxi had never asked and wasn't particularly curious about.
Their relationship was merely one of having met a few times; it hardly qualified as being close.
She shook her head.
"Since you're not close, there's no need to say so much," Zhou Xuanyu's expression grew colder.
Junxi was unsure which landmine she had stepped on to upset him. She pouted, "So where are you taking me?"
"Home."
