Chapter 45: The Mountain Has Trees 5
Junxi felt a sharp pain in her heart.
“Xuan, I’m sorry.” She reached out and grasped her brother's arm. “I shouldn’t have said that to you.”
Jun Xuan shook his head, raising his hand to brush away the remnants of tears on Junxi's cheek. “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have made you sad. Sister, do you know? I can’t stand seeing you cry. When you cry, I feel useless…”
“Alright, I won’t cry anymore.” Junxi moved her lips and forced a smile. “If the school insists on making you move out, I’ll find a place nearby. Then I’ll move out to live with you.”
“Sister, you don’t have to do that for me…”
“It’s not for you,” she replied. “It’s for my own convenience. You have no idea how troublesome it is for me to squeeze onto the subway and transfer to a bus every morning. I should have moved out a long time ago.”
Jun Xuan knew his sister was trying to comfort him. After thinking for a moment, he asked, “Do we have enough money to rent a place?”
“Are you underestimating your sister?” Junxi winked at Jun Xuan. “I have money.”
Jun Xuan seemed unconvinced, and just as he was about to say something else, footsteps suddenly echoed in the hallway. Junxi and Jun Xuan both looked down.
Zhou Xuanyu stood at the corner leading from the seventh floor to the eighth floor; she didn’t know when he had been standing there.
“Why don’t you go in and study? Focus on your work; leave the rest to your sister.” Junxi patted Jun Xuan’s shoulder.
Jun Xuan glanced at Zhou Xuanyu again before nodding and turning to leave.
Zhou Xuanyu walked over, appearing calm and composed despite being on the eighth floor.
"Why are you here?"
"Didn't I say to call me when you're done? Why didn't you call?"
He seemed to ignore Junxi's question and continued speaking.
"I have something to discuss with my brother."
Zhou Xuanyu remained silent, merely watching Wen Junxuan's tall, slender figure disappear down the hallway, lost in thought.
"How did you know I was here? Did you come looking for me?"
Zhou Xuanyu withdrew his gaze, his expression indicating he had no intention of answering her.
Junxi pouted, but then she saw him suddenly turn and crouch down in front of her.
"What are you doing?" Junxi instinctively took a step back, and the pain in her ankle flared up. She almost forgot that she was still injured.
"Get on." Zhou Xuanyu tilted his head slightly.
"Are you going to carry me?" Junxi clenched her fists, her heart racing out of rhythm.
Zhou Xuanyu said nothing, instead patting his shoulder as if urging her to hurry up and get on.
Junxi hesitated for a moment, then suddenly stood up and grabbed Zhou Xuanyu's wrist, pulling herself forward and resting against his shoulder. Her feet left the ground in an instant.
"Hey, hey, hey..."
She exclaimed in surprise, flailing her arms as she wrapped them around Zhou Xuanyu's neck. The faint scent of tobacco wafted into her nose, and her body gradually relaxed against his back.
This wasn’t the first time he had carried her, but she felt more nervous than ever before.
Zhou Xuanyu walked steadily, step by step.
Going down the stairs was easier than going up; the person on his back felt soft, like a paper doll pressed against him. She seemed delicate, yet her presence stirred an unsettling feeling within him. What kind of woman could climb to the eighth floor on a sprained ankle and still exude such confidence?
"You really know how to keep me on my toes," he suddenly said.
Junxi rested her face against the back of Zhou Xuanyu's neck without arguing, simply allowing him to speak.
As he scolded her, all the frustrations she had been holding onto vanished completely.
In front of her brother, she was used to putting on a brave face. But in front of Zhou Xuanyu, she could effortlessly revert to being Wen Junxi, who only knew how to rely on others.
But could she truly depend on him?
