Chapter Forty-Eight: The Mountain Has Trees
Although Zhou Xuanyu said her foot injury was considered a work-related injury, Junxi still decided to take only one day off as originally planned.
The office had been quite busy lately, and as a newcomer, she didn’t want to hold everyone back because of her own issues.
Xiaolin and the others were unaware of Junxi's injury, so when Junxi walked in, she was greeted with requests for help from all sides. Most of the tasks were just minor photocopying jobs, which didn’t require much effort.
“Junxi, could you help me take this stack of documents to the PR department on the 32nd floor?” Xiaolin pushed a pile of papers in front of Junxi, pouting and making a gesture that pleaded for her assistance. Just as Junxi nodded in agreement, Xiaolin’s phone rang urgently. She answered the call while mouthing a quick thank you.
The stack of documents was thick and heavy just by looking at it. After carrying it for a few steps, Junxi felt her arms growing weary. Fortunately, as she reached the hallway, the elevator doors opened right in front of her.
She was momentarily taken aback by the person inside the elevator.
It was Zhou Xuanyu, and he was alone.
Zhou Xuanyu had already lifted his foot to step out, but upon seeing her, he adjusted his stance and remained still.
“Aren’t you getting out?” she asked.
“Get in,” he replied.
Zhou Xuanyu’s gaze was firm yet carried a hint of dominance. Junxi complied and stepped inside; the spacious cabin felt even larger with her presence.
As soon as the elevator doors closed, Zhou Xuanyu walked toward her.
Junxi instinctively took a step back. Before she could react further, he lightly took the heavy stack of documents from her hands.
"Is it really that hard to let you rest?" He weighed the documents in his hand and glanced at her feet.
She mirrored his evasion, simply smiling at him.
Zhou Xuanyu felt uncomfortable under her gaze. Clearing his throat, he awkwardly said, "Zhou Ziyan called yesterday. The long-distance call across time zones was just to emphasize once again that I should take good care of you."
Junxi blinked. "So did he ask you to take care of my brother as well?"
Zhou Xuanyu was a smart man; upon hearing Junxi's words, he understood her implication.
"High school is a very important stage. The study and life are tough enough, so living on campus will be more reassuring." He naturally shifted his gaze away, as if explaining or merely stating his opinion.
Junxi nodded in agreement, but her focus was elsewhere.
"So you heard what I said to Jun Xuan?"
"I heard part of it."
His candid response made her hesitate to ask further. She was afraid to inquire whether that part included the phrase that had haunted her all night about the corrupt official...
"Regardless, thank you."
Her obedient demeanor, with her head bowed and brows furrowed, momentarily distracted him.
In truth, even though he hadn't experienced the pain she held deep inside, he was aware of it all the same.
Zhou Xuanyu wanted very much to reach out and touch her hair.
The atmosphere seemed to freeze in that moment.
The elevator came to a stop, the fiery red numbers halting at 32, blinking to remind them they had arrived.
Before the doors even opened, the crisp sounds of laughter filtered through the gap. The Public Relations Department of Hengfu Group was notorious for its flock of charming women. No one could ignore the role these ladies played at the dining table, just as no one could prevent them from eyeing Zhou Xuanyu with desire.
"Ding!"
As the elevator doors slid open, Junxi swiftly snatched the stack of documents from Zhou Xuanyu's hands, her speed surprising even herself.
Indeed, how could she let others see their esteemed president carrying materials for her, a mere translator? What kind of image would that project?
Zhou Xuanyu squinted, glaring at her.
She handled the situation with utmost grace!
Junxi flashed him an innocent smile.
Almost simultaneously, the women outside surged in, calling out loudly, "Mr. Zhou~~~"
Zhou Xuanyu found himself surrounded by them, and Junxi felt a pang in her heart as she limped away from the crowd and out of the elevator...
